Summary: Monica finds new evidence about the deaths of the gang and investigates it with Agent Alfredo.Jenny's Review:
I love this episode. This is part one of the season finale. It is a serious story, but Mulder provides a little comic relief. Reyes gets really into the whole using the weather as an assassin theory. She believes this is how their friends dies. Doggett, being the skeptic that he is, doesn't buy it. Reyes stands up for herself and goes off without him, which is very unusual for her. She recruits Alfredo to help her. I really love this episode. It shows how Reyes is growing and how she is her own person. "Don't you dare roll your eyes at me! (beat) Don't you want to know the truth" Reyes to Doggett
FADE IN:
INT. DARK ROOM WITH LARGE BARRELS OF WATER
For the gloomy effect, there is steam coming out of some pipes that surround the large barrels of water. At this time, we do not know if it's night or day... no windows are in this dark room.
A bald man with a clipboard is walking around checking gages (and other things) near the barrels of water. Another man enters the room. They speak to each other in Russian.
RUSSIAN MAN
I got the call.
BALD MAN
What did he say?
RUSSIAN MAN
That you are no longer
in control of this project.
The Bald Man looks at him with shock. He wasn't expecting this at all.
BALD MAN
Why?
RUSSIAN MAN
He said that you didn't
complete what you were
suppose to do. (beat)
He's alive.
The Bald Man's eyes go wide.
BALD MAN
That's impossible.Two other men come into the room. They approach the Bald Man with force, and drag him away. As they continue to drag the Bald Man away, the Russian Man pulls out a pack of Morley cigarettes. He lights one up. The smoke in the air eerily reminds us of The Cigarette-Smoking Man...
RUSSIAN MAN
Now I am in charge.As we stay on this Russian Cigarette-Smoking Man, we:
FADE OUT:
FADE IN:EXT. GRAVEYARD - SNOWY DAY
The freshly fallen snow has not been touched and is still clean and perfect. Snow continues to fall.
Doggett enters frame, wearing a black trench coat, and carrying five flowers in his hand. He sets one flower in front of each of the graves of Mulder, Krycek, Marita, Scully, and Skinner.
The wind coldly blows. We can see Doggett's breath through the air.
CUT TO:
INT. DOGGETT & REYES' OFFICE - THAT DAY
Monica is at her desk looking at her computer screen intensely. Doggett enters.
DOGGETT
Morning.
REYES
(occupied with computer)
Uh-huh...
Doggett gives her a curious look.
DOGGETT
Found something interesting?
REYES
Yeah...Doggett comes over to see what Monica is looking at.
DOGGETT
(almost laughing)
Oddconspiracy.com? (beat)
You've got to be kidding me.Monica looks up at him.
REYES
I found some very interesting
things... like controlling the
weather to be an assassin.
Doggett rolls his eyes. Monica senses him.
REYES
I'm serious, John.
DOGGETT
Where are you going with this?
REYES
I think you know.Doggett sits down at his desk. He's almost afraid to know what Monica has to say. But somehow he knows... Monica waits for him to respond.
DOGGETT
Are you suggesting that my
friends were killed by some
secret government project?
REYES
You said it, not me.She gives him a sly smile and turns her attention back to her computer.
DOGGETT
Please tell me you aren't
going to investigate this...Monica says nothing and continues reading.
DOGGETT
You can't trust everything
you read on the internet.
REYES
(ignoring his comment)
Remember that one time when
Kersh put me on suspension
and I followed you and Robert
and we found that place in a ditch?
DOGGETT
Yeah...
REYES
That could've been
part of this project.
DOGGETT
(sick of this)
They died because they
drove into a tornado.
REYES
(quick to respond)
A tornado created by the government.Doggett rolls his eyes.
REYES
(mad)
Don't you dare roll your
eyes at me! (beat) Don't
you want to know the truth?
DOGGETT
Wasn't this office bugged?
REYES
(mad)
Don't change the subject, John.There is a long beat of silence.
DOGGETT
Ok, so what if you are right?
What difference does it make,
they're dead.Reyes just looks at him blankly.
REYES
We could stop them.
DOGGETT
(irritated)
What do you mean 'we'?Doggett not puts his full attention back into his newspaper. A way of indicating the conversation is over. Reyes looks a little hurt. She quietly leaves the room.
CUT TO:
EXT. FBI PARKING GARAGE - SAME DAY
Monica steps outside the building. The parking lot is free of people. Monica pulls out her cigarettes and lights up. Behind her, in a dark corner, the Cigarette-Smoking Man steps into view. Monica turns around when she hears him.
CIGARETTE-SMOKING MAN
You got my phone call I see.
Monica looks around the parking garage.
REYES
Not the best place to meet.
All these cameras around...
CIGARETTE-SMOKING MAN
Don't worry about the cameras.
I wouldn't be here if it wasn't safe.The Smoking Man lights up a cigarette.
REYES
Why am I here? What
do you want from me?The Smoking Man waits a beat before answering. Showing he has control of everything.
CIGARETTE-SMOKING MAN
Don't worry Miss Reyes, it's
in your best interest.
REYES
My best interest? I already
told you, I don't want to
be involved with you or your group.
CIGARETTE-SMOKING MAN
Then why did you come?Monica tosses the rest of her cigarette on the ground. She glares at him.
REYES
I'd rather come on my own
than have one of your goons
force me to meet with you.She turns away from him and walks back towards the building.
CIGARETTE-SMOKING MAN
My offer still stands Miss Reyes.She stops and turns around, but says nothing.
CUT TO:
INT. SMOKE FILLED DARK ROOM - NIGHT
The Syndicate members are sitting around. The Cigarette-Smoking Man is standing by a window.
CIGARETTE-SMOKING MAN
Miss Reyes hasn't agreed to
help us. But I think I can
persuade her.
WELL-MANICURED MAN
What are you going to do?
FIRST ELDER
You're not going to use
a gun again are you?
The Smoking Man lights up. Everyone seems to get annoyed with this. Quiet Willy quietly pinches his nose in the background.
CIGARETTE-SMOKING MAN
No. I have my ways.
WELL-MANICURED MAN
(in all seriousness)
So while your explaining your
'ways', put out your cigarette
before you ruin another one of
my good suits.The Well-Manicured Man stares him down. The Smoking Man puts out his cigarette. Off the Well-Manicured Man's satisfied look...
CUT TO:
INT. FBI JANITOR'S LOUNGE - HALLWAY OUTSIDE - NEXT DAY
Monica walks down the hallway towards the Janitor's Lounge. The sound of a car racing game can be heard, along with corny music. She walks in to find Agent Robert Alfredo playing the car racing video game. He's playing by himself. Monica sits down beside him. He doesn't say anything to her because he's in The Zone.
REYES
(quietly)
Hey Robert.
He pauses his game.
ALFREDO
How long have you been
sittin' there?
REYES
I just sat down.
ALFREDO
Wanna join me?Monica shrugs. Why not.
REYES
Sure, what do I do?
Alfredo has already set it up for two players.
ALFREDO
(disbelief)
You've never played a video
game before? (beat) You haven't
lived. (beat) Just use this button to go.
They start playing. Monica looks confused.
REYES
(after a beat)
Robert?
ALFREDO
(in The Zone)
Huh?
REYES
I have this case that I want
to work on, but I don't have
anyone to help me with it...
Alfredo pauses, getting slightly annoyed that she wants to talk and not play.
ALFREDO
What about John?
Monica hesitates for a beat.
REYES
Well... he doesn't want to
do it because it's personal to him.
Alfredo turns off the game. He's interested now.
ALFREDO
What's the case?
REYES
Well, it's more of a
suspicion I have...
Alfredo waits for an explanation.
REYES
I was at this conspiracy website
and... do you remember when you
and Doggett had to go to Kansas
to investigate-
ALFREDO
-Yeah, and we found
you in a ditch.
REYES
(a bit embarrassed)
Yeah... well I still believe
that there is a government
conspiracy with the weather,
and it killed the other agents.
I have new evidence of this.
ALFREDO
Do you think Kersh will let
you get away with doing this case?
REYES
Probably not. But I've got
a connection...
She gives him a sly smile. CUT TO:
INT. DOGGETT'S HOUSE - EVENING
Buddy is barking at something we can't wee. Doggett opens the door and Buddy runs to him. Doggett pats him on the head. Buddy barks and runs back to where he was before.
DOGGETT
What is it Buddy?
Buddy continues to bark. Doggett goes to see what Buddy is barking at. He sees nothing.
DOGGETT
(laughs)
You are a strange dog...
He goes into his kitchen and opens his refrigerator. Buddy hears this, and runs into the kitchen and slides on the floor trying to stop.
MARITA (O.S.)
Buddy come back!Buddy shoots a look back into the living room and runs happily back in. We now know who Buddy was barking at... The Dead Gang. Marita and Scully are kneeling down. Mulder is looking out the window, and Skinner and Krycek are sitting on Doggett's couch.
Doggett enters and sits in his chair and turns on his TV. "Tom & Jerry" comes on... and Doggett watches while eating a bowl of spaghetti.
MULDER
(a little too happy)
Alright! I love "Tom & Jerry"!He sits next to Skinner and Krycek on the couch. Buddy starts to bark again.
DOGGETT
Buddy...Buddy looks back at Doggett, turns his attention back to the wall and barks. Doggett gets up and goes to where Buddy's doggy door is.
DOGGETT
You want out Buddy?Buddy heard the magic word... 'out', and runs excitedly out his doggy door. Doggett sits back down in his chair and watches TV. At the same time, Doggett, Mulder, Krycek, and Skinner laugh at the show. Marita and Scully start to watch too.
MARITA
I love that little mouse.Scully forces out a smile... she's surrounded by dead people who think they are children.
CUT TO:
EXT. TUNGUSKA FOREST - RUSSIA - AFTERNOON
Clouds are snowing on Monica and Alfredo. We can see them breathing in the freezing cold air. They don't look very warm, but they are somehow able to walk.
ALFREDO
(shivering/teeth shattering)
How in the world did we end
up here, Monica? How do we
know this isn't some
wild goose chase?
REYES
(shivering)
There aren't any goose.They continue walking. Suddenly, Alfredo falls down. Monica stops and looks back at him.
ALFREDO
(serious in a pathetic kind of way)
I can't go on... I don't
think I have feet anymore...
Monica walks over to him.
REYES
If you keep laying in the
snow, you will soon have no
body. Get up soldier!
ALFREDO
(he thinks he's dying)
I can't... it's too cold.
REYES
The only way to warm
up is to keep moving.
Alfredo looks up at her. They are both shivering.
REYES
Stop being a sissy, Robert.
You're letting a girl beat you.
Alfredo gets a determined look in his eyes. He stands up and starts to walk. Monica follows him. TIME CUT TO:
EXT. TUNGUSKA FORREST - NIGHT
Monica is now carrying Alfredo. One foot in front of the other... slowly walking... to what we don't even know... She looks up to the sky... a way of asking for help... But she collapses. They both fall to the ground. Alfredo sits up and shakes snow off the top of his head. He slowly looks around... not really knowing where he is. He sees Monica laying in the snow.
ALFREDO
(serious)
Monica? Are you dead?Monica just lays there. Her face down in the snow. Alfredo turns her over on her back. Her eyes are shut. He checks her pulse... still alive. He looks around the dark forest. Looking for a light... a sign of life... anything. He sees nothing... nothing close. He musters up all his strength (the little that he has in him now) and picks Monica up. He slowly walks... walking to where ever he can find shelter...
CUT TO:
INT. KERSH'S OFFICE - DAY
Kersh doesn't look happy, but that's no suprise. Doggett sits in a chair across from Kersh. In the background, we see the Cigarette-Smoking Man, he is, of course, smoking his Morleys...
KERSH
Do you know why you
are here Agent Doggett?
DOGGETT
No sir, I don't.
KERSH
Agent Reyes and Alfredo are
missing. (beat) Were you
not aware of this?
Doggett doesn't know where Kersh is going with this.
DOGGETT
No sir, I was not.
KERSH
(accusing)
Are you not Agent Reyes' partner?
DOGGETT
Yes, Agent Reyes is my partner,
but she has not informed me of
any leave she would be taking.
KERSH
And Agent Alfredo?
DOGGETT
He's not my partner, sir.
Kersh looks Doggett in the eye, trying to stare him down. He's unsuccessful.
KERSH
Do you have any information
as to where Agent Reyes might
be? (beat) Anything at all.
DOGGETT
I told you sir, I don't
know where she is.
KERSH
Do you have any suspicions
as to why she would leave
unannounced?
DOGGETT
(not wanting to tell about Oddconspiracy.com)
Agent Reyes is her own person.
Whatever reasons she may have,
they must have some meaning to her.
Kersh is out of questions. He hasn't gotten anywhere.
DOGGETT
(after a beat)
Is there anything else, sir?
KERSH
No, you may leave.Doggett gets up and walks to the door. On his way out he glances at the Cigarette-Smoking Man. The door shuts behind him.
Kersh and the Smoking Man exchange a look. The Smoking Man heads towards the door.
KERSH
(demanding)
What is this all about?
CIGARETTE-SMOKING MAN
I only tell you what you
need to know.He puts out his cigarette and walks out the door. Kersh gives a glare.
CUT TO:
INT. DIMLY LIT CABIN - TUNGUSKA, RUSSIA
Monica is lying on a bed, covered in warm blankets. Alfredo is sitting next to Monica. The woman of the house puts a blanket around him.
This is the Russian family from The X-Files episodes "Tunguska/Terma", in season four.
WOMAN
(in Russian)
What were you doing out there?Alfredo looks at her confused.
ALFREDO
(in bad Russian)
I don't understand Russian.The woman nods her head. He may speak badly, but he gets his point across.
WOMAN
Amerikanyets?
ALFREDO
(nodding head)
Da.The woman goes over to the stove and brings Alfredo something warm to drink. He takes it and drinks. The woman goes over to check on Monica.
Monica's eyes slowly open. She seems confused, drowsy, and at a loss of where she is. She slowly sits up.
REYES
Where am I?
WOMAN
(in Russian)
Lay down, you will
need your strength.Reyes looks over to Alfredo. He smiles at her. Reyes lies down again. The woman brings her something warm to drink too.
REYES
(taking cup/good Russian)
Spah-see-bah.The Woman's husband comes in. He looks tired and exhausted. He notices Monica and Alfredo.
HUSBAND
(to his wife/Russian)
Americans?
WOMAN
Da.
HUSBAND
Why do they always come here...CUT TO:
INT. DARK SMOKEY ROOM - DAY
The Syndicate members have joined once again for a meeting.
WELL-MANICURED MAN
Do we know where she is?
CIGARETTE-SMOKING MAN
I have a good idea where.
I've sent some men out to
take care of the problem.
SECOND ELDER
What about Agent Doggett.There is a long dramatic beat before the Smoking Man responds.
CIGARETTE-SMOKING MAN
Agent Doggett knows nothing.
(beat) He's too much of a skeptic.
FIRST ELDER
So we leave him be?
CIGARETTE-SMOKING MAN
All the necessary precautions
have been taken.
WELL-MANICURED MAN
What about Kersh? What does he know?
CIGARETTE-SMOKING MAN
Don't worry about him. I've
got him taken care of.
There is a long beat of silence.
FIRST ELDER
Are there any other concerns
that should be brought up?
The Well-Manicured Man gets ready to say something.
FIRST ELDER
(to WMM)
Something that doesn't have
to do with the air in the room.
The Well-Manicured Man stays silent.
SECOND ELDER
I am curious about that. When
are we going to fix the air in this room?
CIGARETTE-SMOKING MAN
(re: cigarette)
Does it really bother
you that much?
WMM/SECOND ELDER
Yes.
The Smoking Man looks around for a beat.
CIGARETTE-SMOKING MAN
Ok.
He pulls his Morleys out of his pocket and tosses them in the garbage can. The group looks on in shock. TIME CUT TO:
EXT. TUNGUSKA FOREST - NEXT DAY
Monica and Alfredo are on the move again. There are no clouds in the sky today, but still a lot of snow on the ground.
REYES
Thanks for saving me.
ALFREDO
You would've done the same.
REYES
I did. You just don't remember.
She smiles at him. They keep walking. The trees around them begin to clear and they see a building. There are men with machine guns all around. Monica and Alfredo hit the ground.
REYES
(optimistic)
This is it. Let's go.
ALFREDO
(pessimistic)
No Monica, this is suicide.
She starts to creep closer.
ALFREDO
Monica stop.
REYES
(almost possessed)
I can't. I have to find the truth.She starts to sneakily run towards the facility. Alfredo stays behind. He watches her with binoculars.
Monica checks to make sure it's clear. It is, so she makes her way to a door. She enters and is out of sight from Alfredo. Unknown to her, but known to us, a guard heard the door close and comes around to inspect.
CUT TO:
INT. BUILDING
The noise of machines is loud. Monica makes her way down a long hallway. At the end, there is a door with the number 205 on it.
She opens the door and sneaks in.
INT. ROOM 205 - CONT
She enters. Steam is coming from pipes, and there are several barrels of water. We realize that this is the same room from the beginning.
She goes over to the barrels of water. She can't tell what their purpose is. A door closes behind her. She quickly spins around.
RUSSIAN MAN
(in Russian)
What are you doing here?!Monica doesn't know what to do. The man forcefully grabs her out of the room.
TIME CUT TO:
EXT. FOREST - EVENING
ALFREDO POV -
He's looking through his binoculars at the building Monica is still in. The door swings open, and Monica is thrown out the door by the Russian Man.
Alfredo looks on, not sure what is happening.
The man pulls out a gun and forces Monica to her knees. Monica looks up to where Alfredo is hiding. The man pulls the trigger!
BLAM!!
He shoots her point blank in the head. She falls to the ground. Dead.
