But things really do start to head south when Monica's deranged brother Carlos shows up. Will Carlos continue his killing spree with Monica and her friends? Author's Note: Well, I have had this story in the works for a long long time now. It all began when I went up north to visit family that drove me absolutely crazy. I began to write to relieve the stress, and that's how this original idea was born. Since then, the story has grown into more character than action and shoot 'em up fluff. A little warning for those who are sensitive to the "F" word... it's used frequently by Carlos Reyes (the badest of all bad dudes). This episode contains violence and mature themes. If you can't handle it, turn back now and wait another week before reading a new episode. So I'm a little daring for FRVS, but you know what, it's my series and I do with it what I please. Please keep in mind that my partner in crime is behind me 110% on this episode. I hope you all enjoy the ride I take you on! Have fun reading. :)
Summary: A nice vacation from the cold winter in D.C. leaves Doggett, Scully and Monica in a chase to Mexico.
FADE IN:
EXT. MOTEL - SOMEWHERE SOUTH TEXAS - DAY
This is a very cheap run down piece of crap excuse for a motel. It's one of those no-namers you wouldn't even think twice about if you were falling asleep at the wheel… even if this was the last motel/hotel/rest stop in all of Texas, you still wouldn't want to stay here.
To our surprise, Monica, Doggett and Scully step into view. Scully doesn't look too sure about this place. She's wearing a bikini, carrying a towel with a little flower wrap-around skirt tied around her. Doggett has his swimming trunks on, a towel over his shoulder, sunglasses on, and a big grin on his face. Monica is wearing shorts, a black tank top and sunglasses. They are heading to the pool of this rundown motel.
SCULLY
Are you sure there's no
Holiday Inn around here?Doggett looks over at her, still smiling. He puts his arm around her shoulder.
DOGGETT
Dana, what fun would that be?
This is how Mon' and I always
travel down to Mexico.
MONICA
(happy)
Just wait until we get to my
Grandmama's. She has no electricity.Monica smiles at Scully. Scully fakes a smile, only dreaming of a nice indoor pool at a Holiday Inn.
DOGGETT
Let's get in the pool!Doggett walks towards the pool. It's not very clean.
SCULLY
I think I'll just work on
my tan. (beat) Oh crap!
MONICA
What?
SCULLY
I forgot my suntan
lotion back in the room.
MONICA
I'll get it for you.Monica turns with a smile. Scully watches her go.
Suddenly, there is a splash behind her. Scully turns around to see Doggett in the pool. She cringes at the thought of someone rationally and willingly jumping into it.
CUT TO:
INT. MOTEL ROOM
The beds aren't made. Sheets folded at the end of each bed. Stains from some kind of liquid are on the walls. This is a real dump.
Monica is digging through Scully's bag looking for the suntan lotion. She's interrupted by a knock on the door.
Monica looks up confused about who could be knocking on their door. Probably Scully coming back after having had enough "fun" in the pool for one day. Monica rolls her eyes and goes over to the door. She doesn't open it right away.
MONICA
(playful)
Who is it?
MAN (O.S.)
(polite)
Yes, um, I'm your neighbor from
next door. I was wondering if me
and my lady friend could borrow
your ice bucket?
Monica opens the door to this friendly sounding man, only to discover that it's her brother Carlos Reyes! Her eyes widen upon seeing him. The last we saw of him was in 6x11 "Rocky Mountain Camping" when he pushed Brad over the cliff, and then only to return in 6x12 "Rocky Mountain Misadventure" when he did horrible things to Scully!
CARLOS
(happy and surprised)
Monica?
Monica doesn't say anything and tries to shut the door. However, Carlos stops her.
MONICA
No!Carlos pulls out his gun and grabs her, putting the gun to her head.
CARLOS
You're coming with me!Monica tries to get away, but her brother is much stronger than she. This is not what she needs after what happened in 6x16 “The Burden of Intuition”.
MONICA
Let me go!He drags her out of the motel room.
EXT. MOTEL ROOM
A white rundown car is parked outside the motel room with the engine running. Sitting behind the wheel is Monica's older brother, Antonio.
Carlos approaches the car, dragging Monica with him.
MONICA
Let me go!! HELP!
CARLOS
(getting frustrated)
Don't be difficult.
MONICA
(hoping John & Dana hear)
HELP!She continues to struggle to get away, but Carlos opens the back passenger seat and forces her in.
Doggett and Scully come running, having heard Monica's cries for help.
DOGGETT
HEY!Carlos looks over to see Doggett. He gives Doggett a smirk and gets in the front passenger seat of the car.
Doggett runs towards them.
CARLOS
(in car)
GO! GO!Antonio checks his rearview mirror and hauls ass out of there upon seeing Doggett.
Doggett is left in their dust.
DOGGETT
God dammit!He stops running. Scully runs up to him.
SCULLY
What just happened? Where's Monica?
DOGGETT
She's been taken by her brothers.
He runs back to their motel room.
SCULLY
Her brothers?Scully follows Doggett.
SCULLY
(worried)
You mean that psycho we
came across during Thanksgiving?
DOGGETT
Yeah. Get your stuff.
SCULLY
(worried)
Are they going to hurt her?Doggett grabs his bag, Monica's bag and Dana’s bag and heads out the door fast. Scully hurries behind him.
EXT. MOTEL ROOM
Doggett has started his truck and is ready to go. Scully quickly gets in.
Doggett floors it and gets on the road, heading in the same direction he last saw Carlos, Antonio and Monica go.
INT. DOGGETT'S TRUCK
Doggett is determined.
SCULLY
You're never going to catch
up with them unless you go faster.
DOGGETT
I'm going fast.
SCULLY
No you're not! You always drive slow.
DOGGETT
No I don't.
SCULLY
Yes you do. Don't you remember on
your way back from Colorado last
year when Monica, Alex and I passed you?Doggett doesn't remember, but right now he doesn't care. He's a man with a mission.
SCULLY(con't)
Don't you remember Krycek mooning
you, my shirt hanging out the window,
and Monica blaring her music and passing you?
Doggett shoots her a look, suddenly remembering.
DOGGETT
That was you?!
Scully didn't realize he didn't know that that was them. She doesn't say anything, and gives him an innocent look. Doggett gives her a look, then floor it.
DOGGETT
Buckle up, baby.They're flyin' now!
Scully quickly puts on her seatbelt. He's going a hell of a lot faster than what is comfortable for her. However, he's now got the Reyes car in sight and is closing in.
DOGGETT
Get my gun out of my bag.
SCULLY
(shocked)
Gun? You brought your
gun with you on vacation?
DOGGETT
You never know.Scully does as he asks and gives him his gun.
SCULLY
What are you going to
do with this?
DOGGETT
Shoot their tires out.
Suddenly, a bullet hits the windshield of Doggett's truck. We notice that Carlos is hanging out the window of the other car with a gun. Scully screams and ducks out of view.
DOGGETT
Grab the wheel, Dana.
SCULLY
(freaked)
What?!Doggett unbuckles his seatbelt and leans out the window of his truck.
SCULLY
(freaked out)
Oh god… he's gone crazy…She grabs the wheel.
BANG! BANG! BANG!
Doggett fires his gun.
DOGGETT
A little more to the left, Dana!More shots are fired from Carlos. The windshield shatters. Scully screams.
Doggett fires back at Carlos. Carlos in return fires one last shot at the truck, blowing out the front tire.
Doggett quickly falls back into the truck and takes control of the wheel. He has no choice but to pull off to the side of the road as the Reyes car leaves them in the dust.
DOGGETT
(pissed)
Shit!He hits the steering wheel as if it will make the situation better. He angrily gets out of the car and walks over to the right front tire.
The tire has been shot out. He kicks it in frustration. Scully stays in the truck, brushing broken glass off of her.
Doggett goes over to Scully's window.
DOGGETT
(trying to keep his calm)
You ok?
SCULLY
Yeah.
DOGGETT
No cuts? Bullets?
SCULLY
No. You?
DOGGETT
I'm fine. However the same
can't be said about the tire.
Scully leans out the window and looks at the tire. It's gone… CUT TO:
INT. REYES CAR
Carlos comes sliding into the car. He has a big grin on his face. He is immediately hit several times by Monica.
MONICA
What the hell are you doing?!
WHACK!
MONICA
Those are my friends you were shooting at!
She hits him several more times.
CARLOS
Stop it.
MONICA
You know John is practically family!
What the hell is your problem?!
She hits him some more. Carlos has had enough of her and aims his gun at her.
CARLOS
Shut the fuck up!His evil look is enough to convince Monica that he might pull the trigger. She sits back in silence and glares at her brothers.
ANTONIO
(knowing Mon is in no mood)
Carlos! Leave her alone.
CARLOS
No!Antonio gives him a glare that might just shut Carlos up for a while.
CUT TO:
EXT. SIDE OF THE ROAD
Doggett has the front right side of the car propped up. Scully comes around from the back of the truck with a spare tire.
She sets it down next to Doggett and sits on it.
DOGGETT
Thanks.
SCULLY
Do you realize your
truck is shot up?
DOGGETT
(mad)
You're point?
SCULLY
We might get pulled over
for suspicious reasons.
Doggett listens, but doesn't seem to be too worried about that at this very moment. He signals for Scully to get off the tire. She does and he gets it on the truck.
SCULLY
I'm guessing since you aren't
responding that you have a plan?
Doggett finishes with the truck.
DOGGETT
I know a guy.
SCULLY
(not sure what that means)
You know a guy?
DOGGETT
Yeah.He heads around to the front of the car to the driver’s side. He gets in. Scully gives him a suspicious look and gets in.
CUT TO:
INT. REYES CAR
They are listening to a Tejano radio station. Antonio is quietly driving the car concentrating on his driving. Carlos seems to be fine with everything that has happened. Monica on the other hand is pissed and upset. Her brothers know she's pissed, and despite Antonio’s concern in the previous episode (“The Burden of Intuition”) she won't let them see that she's upset because "Reyes' don't get upset". That phrase was driven into her from a very young age and she's been like that her whole life.
ANTONIO
(trying to ease tension)
So Monica, why are you down here?Monica doesn't answer him. She's close to crying and about to break. Talking would only speed that up. Antonio looks back at her.
ANTONIO
(still worried for her)
Don't ignore me Mon'.
I asked you a simple question.
Monica takes a deep breath to swallow the lump that has been building in her throat. She quickly wipes away a tear that has fallen to her cheek.
MONICA
(quite/calm)
I was going to visit Grandmama.
ANTONIO
With your friends?
MONICA
Yes, with my friends.
ANTONIO
Why?
MONICA
(upset/mad)
Why do you care?Antonio looks back at his little sister in the rearview mirror. He's not mad at her, or trying to pick a fight with her, he's just concerned and trying to understand what she’s going through.
ANTONIO
I'm your brother and I haven't
really seen you except for a
little bit when you were in
Colorado over Thanksgiving.
When you called the other day,
we only spoke briefly and you
were very vague when talking to me.Monica doesn't answer him, and looks out the window.
CARLOS
(amused; re: Thanksgiving)
I remember that. I tossed
some guy over a cliff.He laughs.
CARLOS
Then I tried to rape your
red-headed friend, “Red”. But
then John stopped me. She had
it coming though. She was coming
on to me and everything. She
liked it. John said you'd be
proud of me, Mon'.
He looks back and has the nerve to smile at her. Monica glares at him.
MONICA
(mad)
You think I'd be proud
because you tried to rape-
CARLOS
No. That's not what I was talking
about. I went back to help someone
I tried to kill. (beat) By the way,
who was that guy?
ANTONIO
Leave her alone, Carlos.
Monica looks away, not wanting to deal with her brothers. The last thing she wants to deal with is him trying to kill Brad because he's not a Latino like Carlos wants her to be with. She covers her hand with the engagement ring, hoping they won't notice.
ANTONIO
We need gas.
He pulls off the road and into a crummy gas station. EXT. CRUMMY GAS STATION
This place is run down. Paint on the signs have faded and no one bothers to re-paint them because no one comes out this far. Things are rusted, dirty windows. This is the kind of place where you're more than likely to get water in your tank that actual gasoline.
There's only one other car in the parking lot, belonging to the poor unfortunate bastard working inside.
Antonio gets out of the car to fill up the tank. However the pump isn't on. He leans into the car.
ANTONIO
I have to go inside. We probably
won't be stopping after this, so
pee if you gotta.
He starts to walk away from the car, but quickly comes back, realizing he's forgotten something very important.
ANTONIO
(dead serious)
Carlos, you will not interact
with the guy inside.Carlos gets out of the car.
CARLOS
(innocent)
I know.
ANTONIO
Yeah, I know "you know". Just
like "you knew" back at the bank.
CARLOS
(defensive)
That wasn't my fault.
He had it coming.
ANTONIO
I do not want to
hear your bull shit, Carlos.
Monica quietly gets out of the car, still not knowing why Carlos took her. Antonio and Carlos are making their way to the gas station.
CARLOS
He did.
ANTONIO
No he didn't. You didn't like
the look of his tie, so you decided
to blow his fuckin' head off.
CARLOS
I did-
ANTONIO
(changing subject)
What the fuck are you doin'?
They stop walking.
CARLOS
What do you mean "what the
fuck am I doin'"? I'm going
to take a fuckin' piss.
That's what I'm doin'.
ANTONIO
I don’t want you to
go inside. Stay out here.
CARLOS
But I've gotta piss.
ANTONIO
You can piss when I'm done.
Antonio walks away. Monica comes up to Carlos.
CARLOS
I need to go in there and
piss. Will you not tell Antonio?
MONICA
Disobeying him again?
CARLOS
I trust you not to tell.
MONICA
I wouldn't anyway because
then you’d put a gun in my
face. (beat) Again.
CARLOS
So I can go?
MONICA
I really don't care. Just as
long as you stop complaining
and don't kill anyone.
CARLOS
Hey, I haven't killed anyone
yet. I even helped your friend
back in Colorado after I tried
to kill him. (beat) I'm getting
better. And I promise you, I
won't kill anyone.He smiles proudly, actually believing he's a good person and in the right. Monica rolls her eyes as Carlos goes inside.
CUT TO:
INT. DOGGETT'S BUSTED UP TRUCK
Doggett is still driving.
SCULLY
Slow down, John.
DOGGETT
I thought you wanted me to drive fast.
SCULLY
You can't speed with a spare
tire on. Let's hope we don't
run into the Reyes brothers again.
At least until we get another car.Doggett nods.
SCULLY
So where are we going?
DOGGETT
To get a new car.
SCULLY
From who? (beat) You see,
I'm trying to figure out
who this mystery guy is
you were talking about.
DOGGETT
Uncle Bob.
SCULLY
Uncle Bob? (beat) Bob what?
DOGGETT
Just Uncle Bob. Nothing
more, nothing less.
He looks over and smiles at her.
SCULLY
And this "Uncle Bob",
does he have a shower?
Doggett shrugs.
SCULLY
You kind of smell.
Doggett looks over at her.
SCULLY
(re: his appalled look)
You jumped into that dirty
swimming pool, John.
Scully smiles at him.
CUT TO: EXT. CRUMMY GAS STATION
The Reyes brothers' car is still parked in front of the gas station. It's a little too quiet outside.
A car is heard approaching the gas station. A beat later, a cop car pulls up, and the Sheriff gets out.
INT. GAS STATION - CON'T
The Sheriff enters the gas station. He has two photocopies of mug shots in his hand. They are of Antonio and Carlos.
We'll take notice that Carlos and Monica have their backs to the Sheriff and are looking at food. Antonio is no where to be seen at this moment.
The Sheriff goes up to the counter where the employee (Toby) is.
TOBY
Evenin' Sheriff.
SHERIFF
Evenin' Toby.
He slaps the mug shots down on the counter in front of Toby.
SHERIFF
You haven't seen these men
around here have you?
TOBY
No sir. Nobody's been
around all day.
The Sheriff looks out the window at the white car that the Reyes brothers have been driving.
SHERIFF
What about the owner
of that car out there?
TOBY
Belongs to a friend of mine.
Toby calmly takes a sip of coffee.
SHERIFF
(suspicious)
A friend huh?
TOBY
Yeah, he's in the back.
Toby looks at the mug shots again.
TOBY
(re: mug shots)
What have they done?
SHERIFF
You hear 'bout that bank
robbery earlier today?
TOBY
A little. Was the only thing
on the radio. Just became
background noise for me after a while.
SHERIFF
They killed five people. Haven't
caught the sons-of-a-bitches yet.
They were seen headed south towards
the Mexican boarder.
Toby nods.
SHERIFF
Thought I'd come out here and
give you a heads up about ‘em.
Toby nods again and takes another sip of his coffee. Out of nowhere, the Sheriff's head gets blown off. Brain matter flies on Toby. We pull back to reveal Carlos with a gun in his hand.
TOBY
(freaked)
Whoa! Holy shit, man!Toby’s hands fly up over his head. Antonio comes out from behind a magazine stand. Monica stands in the background, in shock of what Carlos just did.
ANTONIO
Carlos!
CARLOS
I had to! He signaled!
He gestures to Toby with his gun. Antonio looks over to Toby.
ANTONIO
I doubt it!
CARLOS
He did!
TOBY
I didn’t do anything!
CARLOS
I saw him! He told that
pig we were here!
TOBY
(scared shitless)
No I didn't!
Carlos puts his gun on Toby, who truly didn’t recognize them from the mug shots.
CARLOS
Don't fuckin' lie to me!
Antonio forces Carlos' arm down so he's not aiming it at Toby.
ANTONIO
(pissed)
I thought we agreed on
a zero body count, Carlos.
CARLOS
(innocent)
I thought that was
over after the bank.
ANTONIO
You know better than to
kill a fuckin' cop!
CARLOS
That's besides the point!
This fucker called the
fuckin' cops on us!
TOBY
I didn't! I swear to God!
I didn’t even-
Before he can finish telling them he didn’t even know they were here, Carlos shoots him point blank in the head. Brain matter and blood flies, getting over everything, including Carlos himself, Antonio and Monica. Monica let's out a scream.
ANTONIO
(pissed)
Dammit Carlos!He takes Carlos' gun.
CARLOS
(innocent)
What?
ANTONIO
Don't fuckin' "what" me! You
can't just go around killing
people. That's not what I do.
CARLOS
(pointing to dead Toby)
But he signaled!Antonio has had enough of him. He walks past him, grabs Monica by the hand and leaves the gas station.
EXT. CRUMMY GAS STATION
Antonio and Monica are headed to the car. Carlos follows slowly. Antonio is beyond pissed. He and Monica get in the front seats of the car.
Carlos gets in the back. He's got some food with him.
CARLOS
(as if nothing happened)
Anybody hungry?No one answers him. Antonio angrily pulls out of the gas station. Carlos opens a bag of potatoe chips. He looks over at Monica and pulls out a handkerchief from his pocket and hands it to Monica. She looks at him confused. Why would Carlos have a handkerchief?
CARLOS
(indicating her face/as if it's normal)
You got some brain on you.She takes the handkerchief and wipes some blood and brain matter off of her. This doesn't make much of a difference.
CARLOS
(trying to be innocent)
I'm sorry.No one says anything. Monica hands Carlos his handkerchief back.
There is a long silence in the car. Monica is not handling this very well. She has tears in her eyes, and now she doesn't give a damn if her brothers see that she's upset. Reyes’ do get upset…
MONICA
(tears in eyes)
You said you weren't going to
kill anyone. You promised me.
(pissed) You lied to me!Carlos doesn't know what to say. He did lie to her, but he's also never seen his sister cry before.
MONICA
(crying/quiet)
You promised…
CARLOS
("sympathetic")
I was only looking out
for you back there.
Monica turns around to face him.
MONICA
(pissed)
"Looking out for me"?! By killing
two innocent people because you have
some sick blood thirst?! Don't
you dare rationalize your
behaviour by using me!Carlos doesn't say anything. Monica turns to face the front again.
There is another long beat of silence.
MONICA
If you really were looking out
for me, you wouldn't kill people.
You wouldn't have pulled me into
this hell like you've done. You
would… you would tell me why you
even took me as your "hostage",
or whatever I am to you. (beat)
Why won’t you let me go?
No one says anything.
MONICA
(mad)
I asked why you haven't let me go.
CARLOS
(being honest for her)
We need you to marry Chino
because I killed his brother.
Antonio slams on the breaks and pulls over. He gets out of the car and opens the back door and drags Carlos out of the back seat. Without saying a word, Antonio punches Carlos hard to the ground.
CARLOS
(defensive/rationalizing again)
I owed him money I didn't
have! I had to!
ANTONIO
(pissed beyond belief)
What the hell is the
matter with you?! You
know better than to get
mixed up with someone
like Chino!He hits Carlos hard again.
CARLOS
I had to sell her to
Chino or else he'd kill me!
Antonio picks Carlos up off the ground by his shirt collar.
ANTONIO
I'm gonna fuckin' kill you!
(beat) You do not bring her
into your problems!
CARLOS
I didn't want to die!
I had no choice!
Antonio takes a deep breath and gets more serious than Carlos has ever seen him.
ANTONIO
(serious)
Chino will kill her. (beat) Do
you want your sister to die, Carlos?
CARLOS
(feeling bad)
No.Antonio lets go of Carlos. He takes a deep breath to calm himself.
ANTONIO
(keeping his calm/still pissed)
When we get back to Mexico,
you're going to fix your
Chino problem. (beat) You will
not bring Monica into this,
or into any more of your bull shit
ever again, or I’ll have you regret
it for the rest of your life. (beat)
Do you understand me Carlos?!
CARLOS
Ok.
Antonio looks at him. He doesn't believe him. Carlos has not kept his word through out their trip. He looks at him sternly.
ANTONIO
Say it Carlos: "I will not
bring Monica into my problems".
CARLOS
I said it already.This pisses off Antonio. He's not cooperating. Antonio goes up to Carlos and grabs his head roughly.
ANTONIO
(intense/pissed)
Say it Carlos: "I will not bring
Monica into my problems." Say it!
CARLOS
(scared of his brother/quiet)
I will not bring Monica into my problems.
Antonio lets go of him and Carlos falls to the ground on his knees. Antonio paces.
ANTONIO
(in disbelief)
Holy shit, Carlos!He still can't believe what his brother has done.
ANTONIO
(calming himself)
What the hell is the
matter with you?
He stops pacing and takes another deep breath. He stands there for a beat, collecting himself.
ANTONIO
Get in the car.
Carlos gets up off the ground and goes to the car without a word. Antonio calmly gets back to the car. They start to drive again.
ANTONIO
(to Monica)
There should be a motel down this
road. We'll stop there so you can
clean up and get some rest.
He looks over to Monica. Monica nods her head. This is nothing like how she imagined her visit down to Grandmama’s. So much for trying to get over what happened in New York. Antonio looks concerned and puts a hand on her shoulder.
ANTONIO
You all right?
Monica shakes her head "no".
MONICA
(upset)
What do you think?Antonio knows she's not fine, but what else can you say at moments like this?
CUT TO:
EXT. DIRT ROAD - EVENING - SOMEWHERE TEXAS
The sun is setting and Doggett's busted up truck is making it's way down the dirt road and pulls up in front of a worn out, old, dirty trailer.
He stops the truck and turns off the lights. He gets out. Scully stays in the truck, unsure about this place.
She looks around. Besides the old trailer home, she sees a dusty old, busted up helicopter. Several old wrecked trucks, cars and other junk sitting around.
Doggett leans on the open window frame of the car.
DOGGETT
You coming?
SCULLY
Are you sure someone's here?
DOGGETT
(laughs)
I'm pretty sure.
He smiles at her and turns to face the trailer home.
DOGGETT
(calling out)
Uncle Bob! ¿Dónde eres?Scully gets out of the truck.
SCULLY
Maybe he's not here…Suddenly, bright floodlights come on from the side of the trailer. Doggett and Scully squint. Doggett shields his eyes and Scully faces away from the brightness.
The trailer door opens, and a tall man with a beard comes out with a rifle aimed at Doggett and Scully. This is "Uncle Bob", he's wearing black jeans, an open leather vest with no shirt on underneath, and cowboy boots.
UNCLE BOB
(surprised)
Johnny?
DOGGETT
¿Qué tal?
Doggett and Uncle Bob walk up to each other and give one another a hug.
UNCLE BOB
What are you doin' down here?
DOGGETT
Vacation. It turned on us
when Mon's brothers took her.
UNCLE BOB
The twins?
DOGGETT
No. Carlos and Antonio.
Uncle Bob nods.
UNCLE BOB
That explains why they
were here yesterday.
Some more people come out of the trailer. Uncle Bob's wife, "Aunt Susie" and their two sons. Uncle Bob notices Scully. He leans in closer to Doggett.
UNCLE BOB
(quiet)
I see you are with… uh…
nueva bellísima chica?Doggett smiles.
DOGGETT
Let me introduce you.
He takes Uncle Bob over to Scully.
DOGGETT
Dana, I'd like you to meet
Uncle Bob. (beat) Uncle Bob,
this is Dana.
Scully and Uncle Bob shake hands.
SCULLY
It's a pleasure to meet you.
UNCLE BOB
The pleasures all mine.
He gives her a friendly smile.
UNCLE BOB
(quiet/to Doggett)
Is this Dana Katherine Scully? The
beautiful woman Grandmama Reyes speaks of?
DOGGETT
(quiet)
Yeah…
UNCLE BOB
Oh…Uncle Bob winks at Doggett.
UNCLE BOB
So what do you need?
DOGGETT
See my truck over there?
Doggett points behind him. Uncle Bob looks.
UNCLE BOB
Yeah?
DOGGETT
Need a new one. Can't be
driving around in a busted
up truck, ya know?
UNCLE BOB
No problemo. (beat) How about you
and Dana come on in and freshen
up and join me and my family
for a nice meal.
DOGGETT
Sounds good.
UNCLE BOB
Then tomorrow I will
fix up your truck while
you borrow one of mine, ok?
DOGGETT
Great.
Uncle Bob nods his head and makes his way back to the trailer. Doggett goes up to Scully. He puts his arm around her shoulder.
DOGGETT
Uncle Bob can give us a new truck.
SCULLY
That's good.
DOGGETT
He also invited us to stay
for dinner and freshen up.
SCULLY
That's good because you
really need it. (beat)He's
an interesting guy. How
do you know him?
DOGGETT
When Mon' and I were little,
he use to live near us. We'd
come bother him every once
in a while. He's kind of like
a second father to us.
SCULLY
Oh. So are we near
where you grew up?
DOGGETT
Not too far.
SCULLY
Hmm… (beat) He's different.
DOGGETT
Don't worry Dana, he's cool.
Scully nods her head and they head into the trailer. INT. UNCLE BOB'S TRAILER
The world "trailer" is nothing to describe Uncle Bob's home. Despite what the outside looks like, this place is neatly kept, air conditioned, and nicely decorated.
Aunt Susie is cooking in the kitchen area. Uncle Bob is helping his two sons, Steve (8) and Dave (5) set the table for dinner.
Doggett and Scully enter with their bags. Steve looks over at them.
STEVE
(excited to see him)
Johnny!
Doggett looks over at Steve.
DOGGETT
Little Stevie?
STEVE
Not so little anymore!
I'm all grown up now.
DOGGETT
You look taller, man.
STEVE
And stronger!He "flexes" his "muscles" as if saying he's buff. Doggett laughs.
UNCLE BOB
You know where everything
is, right Johnny?
DOGGETT
I don't think much has
has changed since I was
last here.
UNCLE BOB
Make yourself at home.
Doggett nods and heads down a narrow hallway and into the bathroom.
SCULLY
Is there somewhere I can
get changed into normal clothes?
Uncle Bob comes over to her.
UNCLE BOB
Uh… you can change in our
bedroom, or just wait for
Johnny to finish so you can
hit the showers too.
SCULLY
I'll do that. Thanks.
UNCLE BOB
All right. Make your self
at home. We've got satellite TV.
He signals to the living room. Scully goes and sits down on the couch and turns on the TV.
AUNT SUSIE
Dinner should be ready
in forty-five minutes.SMALL TIME CUT TO:
INT. LIVING ROOM
Steve and Dave come into the living room and sit on the floor in front of a Monopoly board game.
Scully sits comfortably on the couch channel flipping to find something to watch. She stops on the local news.
REPORTER (ON TV)
…a small gas station out side of
town. The two suspects to this double
homicide are the bank robbers from earlier
today: Antonio Reyes and his brother
Carlos. They were last seen heading
towards the boarder. If you see them, call
authorities immediately. They are considered
armed and extremely dangerous.(beat) In
other news, the heat wave is causing many farmers…
DOGGETT (O.S.)
Double homicide?Scully looks up at him. He's wearing a dark blue T-shirt and jeans. His hair is wet and he's finally clean from his shower.
SCULLY
Yeah, Monica's brothers.
DOGGETT
Did they say who got killed?
SCULLY
I don’t know. I didn’t come in on time.Doggett nods his head.
SCULLY
I hope Monica's ok…
DOGGETT
I’m sure she is. (beat) Bathroom's open now
if you want to clean up and get
out of your swimming suit.
SCULLY
Thanks.Scully smiles at him and gets up off the couch.
SMALL TIME CUT TO:
INT. UNCLE BOB'S TRAILER – DINING ROOM
Everyone is sitting at the table eating the nice meal Aunt Susie made. They are all having a good time.
UNCLE BOB
(laughing)
Oh man, you should've seen him!Doggett is covering his face, embarrassed by the story being told.
UNCLE BOB
He was so wasted!
DOGGETT
We don't have to go on.
SCULLY
(laughing)
Yeah we do.She gives him a smile.
UNCLE BOB
So after he kissed the bar
tender, he got up on the bar
and started to do a striptease!
SCULLY
You're kidding!
UNCLE BOB
(laughing at the fond memories)
No. He was a fun
drunk when he drank.
SCULLY
So what happened?
DOGGETT
(dreading the continuation)
This is so embarrassing…
He puts his head down on the table.
UNCLE BOB
Well, the bar tender, he's pissed
that this crazy drunk has kissed
him and is now doing a little
striptease on his bar. So he
calls the cops.
SCULLY
(amused)
Oh no.Doggett’s head pops up from the table.
DOGGETT
(hoping to change the subject)
So what's for dessert?
Aunt Susie smiles at him, knowing how embarrassing this story is for him.
UNDLE BOB
So the cops come into the
bar… and you know what?
SCULLY
What?
UNCLE BOB
They don't arrest him.
SCULLY
(shocked)
They don't?
UNCLE BOB
Hell no! He's singin' like a
fool! They've had a slow night
and need some entertainment.
They were women cops, by the way.
SCULLY
What about the bar tender?
Uncle Bob laughs.
DOGGETT
(reluctant)
As I vaguely recall, the bar
tender was fed up with everyone
at his bar and left for the night.
UNCLE BOB
So the party went on.
SCULLY
You're kidding.
UNCLE BOB
Nope.
DOGETT
If only he were…
UNCLE BOB
Ask Monica about it sometime.
She's got photos of it.
DOGGETT
Of course she does. (beat)
Can we stop telling embarrassing
stories please?
Aunt Susie gets up from the table.
AUNT SUSIE
I'll go get the pie I made.
DOGGETT
Cherry?
AUNT SUSIE
I know your favorite.She gives him a smile.
UNCLE BOB
I think she needs to hear about
the time you pissed in front
of a busy street.
DOGGETT
No.
UNCLE BOB
You're right Johnny. Not
exactly dinner conversation.
He smiles a big smile, knowing he's embarrassed John too much for one night. Out of nowhere Dave, the little five year old, asks:
DAVE
Daddy, what's a striptease?
UNCLE BOB
You'll find out when you're older.
Uncle Bob smiles at his son, who nods his head. CUT TO:
EXT. THE COYOTE MOTEL - NIGHT
The Reyes car pulls up in front of the motel office. This is yet another old motel that has more similarities to the Bate's Motel than one would like.
The neon sign has a few lights burned out and the "Vacancy" sign is blinking with an annoying electrical buzz.
Antonio gets out of the car.
ANTONIO
Sit tight. I'll be out soon. I
don't want one word out of you, Carlos.Carlos acknowledges him with a simple nod of his head. And for the first time during this trip, he listens to his older brother.
Antonio nods in satisfaction and heads to the motel office.
Carlos and Monica sit in complete silence. A few beats later, Antonio comes out with a key to a room. He gets in the car.
CARLOS
Do they have the X rated channel?
ANTONIO
I said I didn't want to hear
one more word come out of you,
Carlos. So that means not
one more word.
Carlos goes silent. Antonio drives up in front of a room. He turns off the car.
ANTONIO
(to Carlos)
Get our bags.
They all get out of the car. Carlos goes to the trunk and opens it. Lying on top of a bunch of guns are two duffel bags. Carlos grabs them and shuts the trunk.
CUT TO:
INT. MOTEL ROOM - CON'T
The doors open and the lights come on. This place isn't too bad. The beds are made, there's a small TV, a chair, table, phone, and a shower that is clean. The walls have nice colorful wallpaper (not too tacky). There are two beds with a nightstand in between them that has a lamp and alarm clock on it.
Antonio walks in first, followed by Monica and then Carlos.
Carlos sets the duffel bags down on the chair. He shuts the door and closes the curtains on the window.
ANTONIO
I have some extra clothes
you can wear, Mon'.
He goes over to his bag and pulls out a gray T-shirt and black sweat pants. He hands them to her.
MONICA
Thank you. (beat) I'm going
to take a shower now.
Antonio nods his head. Carlos jumps onto one of the beds and grabs the remote for the TV. Monica tiredly makes her way to the sink and counter. She takes off her diamond engagement ring and sets it on the counter along with her earrings. She takes her cell phone out of her pocket and sets it down too.
She goes into the bathroom and shuts the door.
Antonio was watching her the whole time. The shower starts in the bathroom.
Antonio goes over to the counter. He picks up the diamond engagement ring and looks at it. There is an engravement on the inside: "Love Eternal". Antonio ponders this, knowing that this is more than likely and engagement ring. He gently sets it back down on the counter and goes back to the bed area and sits on the other bed.
Carlos is busy channel surfing to notice Antonio in deep thought.
Antonio's mind thinks about the ring. Thinking back to Thanksgiving in Colorado and the man he saw holding Monica in his arms before Carlos tossed him over the cliff, the man’s apartment Monica was at when he called. If she is engaged, like he's thinking, there's no wonder why she hasn't informed anyone. He's not a Latino like her other brothers want her to marry. Or in the case of Carlos, he's not Chino.
Perhaps Monica is afraid to tell her family because her brothers will overreact. Much in the fashion that Carlos did in Colorado.
Antonio shakes his head in disgust on how much fear Monica's other brothers have embedded into her. And even Antonio himself has helped with that fear to an extent. So much fear that she can't even tell them good news like being engaged.
He lets out a sigh. She'll tell when she's ready. His new mission is to diminish her fear. He doesn’t know how, but somehow he’ll do it.
Moments later, Monica comes out of the bathroom wearing the T-shirt and sweat pants Antonio gave her.
Antonio looks over at her. She goes over to the counter and puts her earrings in and her ring back on. She cautiously looks over her shoulder to make sure no one saw her put it on. Antonio quickly looks away when she looks over at him.
She goes into the bed area and crawls on the bed that Antonio is on. She lays down exhausted from the hellish day. She faces away from Antonio and towards the wall.
He looks down at her, feeling horrible for what she's had to go through. Not only today, but with what happened up in New York. He sees her wipe away a tear from her eye.
ANTONIO
(soft)
I'm sorry, Monica.
MONICA
It's not you. (beat) I just
wish I was at Grandmama's, and
that none of this ever happened.
ANTONIO
Me too.Monica sniffs a little, then shuts her eyes to sleep. She's out in no time.

CU - DOGGETT'S FACE
He's sleeping peacefully until the sudden burst of sunlight wakes him up.
INT. UNCLE BOB'S TRAILER

(loudly)
Rise and shine, Johnny!Doggett sits up on the couch and puts his index finger to his lips to "Shush" Uncle Bob so he doesn't wake Scully who is sleeping peacefully and undisturbed on the love seat across the room.
Doggett quietly gets up. He's only wearing his boxers.
DOGGETT
(quiet)
What time is it?
UNCLE BOB
(quiet)
Five-thirty on this beautiful
sunny day. (beat) I found one
of my trucks you can use. Come on.Uncle Bob heads out the door. Doggett grabs his jeans and T-shirt and puts them on.
TIME CUT TO:
EXT. UNCLE BOB'S TRAILER - 9:45 A.M.
Doggett and Uncle Bob are working on one of Uncle Bob's trucks. Uncle Bob is under the truck, and Doggett is working under the hood.
A radio is on and the song "It's The End of The World As We Know It (And I Feel Fine)" by R.E.M. is playing.
Scully comes out of the trailer. She stops suddenly when she sees Doggett leaning into the car wearing only his jeans. She cocks her eyebrow and tilts her head to get a “better look”.
Doggett looks over his shoulder and sees her. He stands normally, and turns to face her, not noticing her checking him out.
DOGGETT
Good mornin'.
He smiles at her. Scully looks up at his face with a goofy grin.
SCULLY
A good morning indeed.She gives him a sly smile, knowing just how good her morning is… Doggett comes up to her, wiping his hands on a dirty towel to get the grease off.
DOGGETT
Sleep well?
SCULLY
Yeah.
DOGGETT
That's good. (beat) The
truck should be ready soon.
SCULLY
Looks like you'll
need another shower.
DOGGETT
Yeah, we've been working on
the truck for about four hours
now. Just checking it over.
Scully nods.
SCULLY
So where exactly are we going?
DOGGETT
Well I talked to Uncle Bob, and
he said Carlos was having
a "Chino Problem"-
SCULLY
"Chino Problem"?
DOGGETT
(shrugs)
Who knows. (beat) He said they'd
probably be going back home.
SCULLY
To Mexico?
DOGGETT
Yeah, so that's where we're
heading. Uncle Bob said something
about how Carlos had to sell
Monica… he wasn't too sure what
Carlos was talking about, but
it can't be good, ya know?
SCULLY
Sell her? (beat) Are all
of her brothers like this?
DOGGETT
It's hard to say. (beat) Carlos
is nicknamed "The Mutant" because
he does things that the word "wrong"
can't even begin to describe. Then
there's Antonio. He's as old as me.
He's a nice guy who will do a random
bank robbery here and there. He never
wants anyone to get hurt. (beat) Then
there are the twins: Juan and Jose. They
act tough and wear ski masks. I think
they are just poseurs.
SCULLY
Poseurs?
DOGGETT
Wanna-be's.
Scully nods her head.
DOGGETT
Then there is her other older
brother, Roberto. He's a business
man. That's all I really know about
him. (beat) Then there's Enrique. She's
never met him. I haven't either. He
was put on death row the year the
Reyes family adopted her.
SCULLY
(worried)
What are her parents like,
and is going to her Grandmama's
really the safest thing?
DOGGETT
(laughs)
Don't worry about Grandmama. She's
sweet. No violence. No electricity.
A real woman of the Earth. (beat)
Mon's parents are nice people. I
sometimes don't think they know
what their sons do.CUT TO:
EXT. MOTEL ROOM
CU - MOTEL DOOR
A man's hand comes into view and knocks three times calmly.
MAN (O.S.)
Who is it?
We pull back to reveal Carlos standing outside the door.
CARLOS
(nice & innocent)
Yes, um, I'm your neighbor from next
door, and I was wondering if me and
my lady friend could borrow your ice bucket.
The man inside the room opens the door. Carlos smiles at him. And it's not an evil devious smiles, rather a nice one.
MAN
Sure. Let me get it.
CARLOS
Thank you.
The man gets the ice bucket and hands it to Carlos.
CARLOS
I'll bring it right back.
MAN
Not a problem.
CUT TO: CU - MONICA'S FACE
She's sleeping comfortably in the motel bed, enjoying her peaceful sleep and escape from the hell her brothers have put her in. When suddenly, ice and water is dumped on her. She wakes up with a start.
CARLOS
(happy)
Rise and shine little sis!
He smiles a big smile at her.
MONICA
(not too happy with this)
What was that for?
CARLOS
We're leaving soon,
it's time to get up.
He pulls the sheets off of her. Antonio comes in.
ANTONIO
Carlos. I thought I told
you to get in the car.
CARLOS
Ya voy!Carlos leaves Monica's bedside and heads out the door. Antonio comes over to Monica.
ANTONIO
Are you all right?
MONICA
Do I look all right? Carlos drags
me on this “adventure”, sells me
to Chino, throws water and ice in my face.
I’ve been suspended from my job for
a month without pay… because… I did my
job. I just feel that life is only
getting worse for me, ya know?
ANTONIO
Don’t think that way, Mon’.
You have a lot to look
forward to in your life.He gives her a reassuring smile and glances down at her engagement ring. Monica, for the first time since she’s been taken by her brothers, can’t help but smile.
ANTONIO
So, that guy you’re with…
Uh, Brad? Is that his name?
Monica looks down afraid that her brother will get after her for Brad not being a Latino. She nods her head to answer his question.
ANTONIO
He sounds like a nice guy
on his answering machine.
(beat) How long have you
been with him?
MONICA
A while now.Antonio nods his head.
ANTONIO
What does he do?
MONICA
He’s an Assistant Director at the FBI.
ANTONIO
Impressive.He smiles at her.
Impatient, Carlos comes back into the room.
CARLOS
I’m hungry. Let’s get going!Monica gets out of bed so they can hit the road again.
CUT TO:
INT. TRUCK - NOON
Doggett and Scully have hit the road once again, borrowing one of Uncle Bob's trucks while he fixes Doggett’s.
Scully is wearing a white tank top and shorts. Her hair is pulled back in a ponytail.
Doggett is wearing a white T-shirt, jeans, and a white cowboy hat. He looks over and smiles at her. His smile fades when he notices a worried look on Scully's face.
DOGGETT
What's wrong?
SCULLY
What if Monica's dead?
I mean the news said
it: they are armed and
dangerous. What if her brothers
snapped and killed her?
DOGGETT
Don't worry, Dana. Her brothers
would never hurt her. They'll
protect her from any harm.
SCULLY
Are you sure?
DOGGETT
Yeah. We just have to get
her back before Carlos-
SCULLY
-Sells her.Scully looks over at him. Doubt in her eyes that they'll protect Monica. Doggett notices.
DOGGETT
Don't worry. Antonio is there,
he won't let Carlos sell Monica.
SCULLY
I'll trust you, but
I can't help but worry.
DOGGETT
We're almost there. This
is the boarder up here.
Scully looks. They pull up to a long line of cars all waiting to cross the boarder. After a long while of inching forward, one of the Border Patrol Guards comes up to their truck.
BORDER PATROL
I need to see your- Johnny?
Scully looks at Doggett: "he knows you"?
DOGGETT
Hola, Cheech.
CHEECH
Long time no see, man.
How've you been?
DOGGETT
Good.
Cheech looks in the truck at Scully.
CHEECH
She with you?
DOGGETT
Yeah.
CHEECH
Lookin' for Monica?
DOGGETT
Yeah. I take it they crossed?
CHEECH
A while ago. (beat) Are her
brothers giving her hell again?
DOGGETT
Of course they are.
CHEECH
Typical. (beat) Ok, go ahead.
He waves them on.
DOGGETT
See ya.Doggett drives on, crossing the border and going into Mexico.
SCULLY
The border patrol officer is
on a first name basis with you?
She smiles at him.
DOGGETT
Yeah. He knows me. I
come down here a lot.
He use to be a neighbor
when I was growing up.
He gives her a smile.
SCULLY
I must say Johnny… you keep
unfolding like a flower.She gives him a smile.
TIME CUT TO:
INT. REYES HOUSE - MONICA'S BEDROOM – MEXICO – 2:13P.M.
Monica's room at her parent’s house is large and spacious. The walls are white with paintings of flowers hung on them in expensive frames. The floors are wood and nicely varnished. There is a large window with light yellow curtains that faces out to the back of the house and to a large garden. Sunlight shines into the room.
Monica and Carlos are there. Monica is in a white wedding dress, and Carlos is putting handcuffs on her.
MONICA
You can't do this.
CARLOS
You have to marry Chino,
or else he'll kill me.
MONICA
Where's Antonio?
CARLOS
I knocked him out so
he can't stop me.
MONICA
I'm not going to marry Chino.
CARLOS
He's a nice guy with money.
MONICA
He's a drug dealer!
CARLOS
(optimistic)
That's good money.
MONICA
No it's not! Let me go!Her door opens and a woman enters. This is Isabella Reyes, Monica's mother. She sees Carlos putting handcuffs on Monica.
ISABELLA
(suspicious)
Carlos? What are you
doing to your sister?
CARLOS
(lying badly)
Oh… you know. We're
just playing "dress up".
MONICA
He sold me to Chino!
CARLOS
Shush!
Isabella goes up to them. Her hands on her hips.
ISABELLA
(not happy)
Carlos?
CARLOS
No I didn't.
ISABELLA
Let your sister go. And where
did you get those handcuffs?
CARLOS
(lying)
I bought them…
MONICA
Make him let me go.
ISABELLA
Carlos… let her go.
CARLOS
But-
He's cut off by her stern look.
CARLOS
(after a hesitated beat)
Ok…He reluctantly un-cuffs Monica.
ISABELLA
Your father wishes to speak
with you Carlos. He's not
happy that Chino Gonzalez
is in his foyer.
Carlos stands there looking very guilty.
ISABELLA
(commanding)
Don’t just stand there, your
father is waiting for you.
CARLOS
(unsure what to expect from his father)
Ok…He leaves the room. Isabella turns to Monica.
ISABELLA
It has been too long, Monica.She hugs Monica.
ISABELLA
What brings you here to Mexico?
MONICA
I was coming to visit Grandmama.
ISABELLA
(tired of their behaviour)
And then your brothers
started to act up again?
MONICA
Of course. (beat) They
took me away from my friends.
ISABELLA
Oh, you brought Johnny?
MONICA
And my friend Dana.
Although I have no
idea where they are now.
ISABELLA
I trust that everything will be fine.
MONICA
I hope so. (beat) Some bad things
have happened up in D.C.
ISABELLA
(worried)
Bad things?
MONICA
I got suspended for a month. (beat)
Can you help me get out of this dress?
ISABELLA
Of course.
MONICA
I was helping out on a missing
person’s case and it all went
wrong. (beat) It was the New
York Senator’s daughter who got
taken. She got killed, and the
Senator blames me for everything.
ISABELLA
You didn’t do anything wrong did you?
MONICA
No, but he told the press about
how it was my fault and the Bureau
had to take action against me, even
though they agree with what I did.
ISABELLA
I am so sorry. (beat/worried)
Monica Isabella? Where did you
get this bruise? Did your brother
hurt you?
MONICA
No. The Senator got mad at
me and pushed me into a wall.
The Bureau’s doing nothing about
that either.She’s not happy about this.
ISABELLA
They should take care
of their agents.Isabella looks at her daughter, who still has the wedding dress on.
ISABELLA
Someday you will make
a beautiful bride.
Monica smiles.
ISABELLA
So… are you seeing anyone?
Monica is about to tell her about Brad, but is stopped by a loud shouting match coming from downstairs.
ISABELLA

I always have to stop
the shouting. (beat) I'll be back.
She kisses Monica on the cheek and leaves the room. CUT TO:
EXT. THE GATES OF THE REYES HOUSE
Now that we are outside, we can get a better look at the Reyes House. House is an understatement. This place is a mansion. Once you get past the gates, there is a long driveway that makes its way up to the mansion where it has a large fountain in the middle of the circular drive.
Doggett and Scully pull up to the gate. Doggett hits a button. After a small beat, a voice comes through an intercom.
MAN'S VOICE (FILTERED)
(sounding rather devious)
Who is it?The man sounds as if he already knows and is being difficult.
DOGGETT
John Doggett.
MAN'S VOICE (FILTERED)
(still devious)
Who?
DOGGETT
Come on. Stop messing around Juan.
JUAN (FILTERED)
How do you know it's me?
DOGGETT
You're always on “gate duty”.
JUAN (FILTERED)
Ok. Fine. You can come in.
A beat later, the gates open. Doggett drives up the driveway. Scully looks out the window in awe at this place. Palm trees line the driveway, it’s more of an oasis than anything else.
SCULLY
I had no idea Monica's family
was so rich… considering she
lives in a small apartment
with Marita and I.Doggett laughs.
DOGGETT

They pull up in front of the house.
SCULLY
Wow…Doggett and Scully get out of the truck. He goes over to her side and they make their way up the steps to the door. They are greeted by two men wearing ski masks. They are Juan and Jose: the twins. They pull guns out on Doggett and Scully.
JOSE
Stop there!Doggett and Scully stop. Scully leans into Doggett.
SCULLY
They're the poseurs?
Doggett nods his head.
DOGGETT
Hey guys!
JUAN
Long time no see Johnny!
What's goin' on?
They put their guns away.
DOGGETT
Is Monica here?
JOSE
(bad liar)
No.
DOGGETT
I know she's here.
JOSE
How? Did he tell you?Jose hits Juan.
DOGGETT
No. I just know.
JOSE
Oh. Come on in.They open the door for Doggett and Scully. They check Scully out as they follow her in.
INT. FOYER
Marble floors, plant life, chandelier, very well kept and large with a fountain and a huge staircase that splits into two.
DOGGETT
Where is she?
JUAN
Carlos took her to her room.
She's going to marry Chino.
JOSE
Chino left you dumb shit.
JUAN
He did?
JOSE
Where have you been? Papa
got pissed at Carlos for
allowing Chino in the house.
Then he continued to yell at
Carlos about selling Monica.
Sometimes, Carlos is so dumb.
JUAN
Is that what all the
yelling was about?
JOSE
Yeah.
DOGGETT
So she's up in her room?
JOSE
I think so.
DOGGETT
Thanks guys.
JUAN
No problemo, Johnny.Doggett and Scully leave, and head to Monica’s room.
SCULLY
They're like Mulder and Krycek
only they look the same…
Doggett laughs knowing she's right. CUT TO:
INT. MONICA’S ROOM
Monica isn’t alone anymore. Her Grandmama is with her. They are sitting on Monica’s bed. Monica is finally out of the wedding dress and is wearing a white T-shirt and jeans. Monica’s Grandmama on the other hand is wearing a homemade dress with bright colorful flowers on it.
GRANDMAMA
I don’t want you to worry, Monica.
People will not look down on you
when you get back to work. They
know you are a good agent.
MONICA
I hope you’re right.
GRANDMAMA
I am always right. I have
been right for many years now.
Grandmama smiles at Monica. There is a knock on the door.
MONICA
Come in.
Doggett and Scully enter.
DOGGETT
Good, I still know my
way around this place.
MONICA
(smiles)
Hey guys.
SCULLY
Are you all right? I’ve
been so worried for you.
MONICA
I’m fine. (beat) Dana,
you’ll be happy to know that
we don’t need to go down to
my Grandmama’s house because
she came up here anticipating
that we would come here first.
Monica and her Grandmama get up off the bed and go over to Doggett and Scully.
MONICA
Dana, this is my Grand-
GRANDMAMA
(happy)
-Oh Dana, I’m so glad
to finally meet you.
She hugs Scully.
SCULLY
I didn’t know Mon’ spoke
to you about me…
GRANDMAMA
Oh, she doesn’t. I have
known about you for many
years now. You see, Johnny
here, he’s destined to be
with you. When he was a little
boy I told him that he would
spend his life with Dana Katherine
Scully. Of course he just shrugged
it off as being “bull shit”. He had
filthy mouth as a child. Good thing
that’s not true today, no?
Scully looks at Grandmama confused. One, how the hell did she know her full name. And two, the woman can ramble.
GRANDMAMA
You see, Johnny. I tell you
you would be with her, didn’t I?
Doggett just smiles, not wanting to get into the whole psychic ability thing that Grandmama seems to have. She gives him a hug. The door to Monica’s room opens and Antonio enters, holding an ice pack on his head.
ANTONIO
Hey John?
Doggett turns to face him.
DOGGETT
Yeah?
ANTONIO
Can I talk to you outside?
DOGGETT
Sure. (beat; to Dana, Mon,
and Grandmama) I’ll see you later.
GRANDMAMA
Ok. Bye-bye.Doggett leaves the room to go with Antonio.
GRANDMAMA
Oh, I must speak seriously with
you girls. It’s very important.She heads back over to Monica’s bed. They follow her.
GRANDMAMA
Sit down next me.They do as Grandmama requests.
GRANDMAMA
(serious/worry)
Something bad is going to happen to you.
I want you to know that though you may
think things will not get better, they
will. You both must remain strong and
be there for each other. I feel that there
will be no one else around for you to
trust. Always trust one another, ok? Never
give up hope because it is hope that will
bring you strength. Do you understand?She looks at them with worry in her eyes.
MONICA
(worried)
What’s going to happen?
GRANDMAMA
All I can say is that everything
happens for a reason. Even if you
see no logic in it at first. Please
remember that, Moni. (beat) This is
a road you and your friends must travel
down to make you who you will become.
She holds Monica’s hand and looks in her eyes.
GRANDMAMA
I feel it.She looks at Scully and takes hold of her hand as well.
GRANDMAMA
I wish I had good news to tell. The only
good thing about what is to come is that
it will not last forever. There is a light
at the end of the tunnel. Johnny and Bradley
will be there for the both of you, all right?They sit in silence for a beat. Not sure what to think of what Grandmama is saying. Grandmama is deep in thought…
After a beat…
GRANDMAMA
(more cheery)
Oh and Monica, watch out for frying pans.She gives them a big smiles and stands up.
GRANDMAMA
There is big feast tonight.
I must go help your mother.She leaves, leaving them to wonder what she’s talking about.
SCULLY
(doubtful of Grandmama’s psychic ability)
Interesting woman, Mon’.
Scully smiles at Monica.
MONICA
Yeah, she’s like that. Very
energetic and alive.
SCULLY
I’m talking about what
she just told us. What
does she mean?
MONICA
I don’t know. I guess time will tell.
Monica shrugs her shoulders and gives Scully a smile. CUT TO:
EXT. BACKYARD – POOL
Doggett and Antonio are sitting outside near the pool.
DOGGETT
So you really want to
get into law enforcement?
ANTONIO
Yeah. I realized something
recently that made me start
thinking that I would like
to do something in law enforcement.
DOGGETT
Out of curiosity, what was it?
ANTONIO
Carlos.
Doggett nods. Seeing the acts of Carlos would make anyone want to stop those kinds of people.
ANTONIO
You know, I hate robbing banks.
I don’t even know why I do it
anymore. (beat) I guess it’s
just an addiction, ya know?
The rush of it all.
Antonio looks pensive.
DOGGETT
But…?
ANTONIO
But recently… it’s gotten
out of hand ever since Carlos
started to tag along. I don’t
like the life I’m living right now.
DOGGETT
First thing you should do
is turn yourself in.
ANTONIO
That’s what’s holding me back.
I don’t want to be locked up
in a cage again.
DOGGETT
Doing time is the first
step to getting an honest life.
It’ll put the past in the past.
ANTONIO
Yeah, but with my history,
who would ever want me in
law enforcement.
DOGGETT
You’ve got connections. You
could help them nail people
like Chino Gonzalez.
ANTONIO
Wouldn’t that be nice.
DOGGETT

Doggett and Antonio are interrupted by Monica and Scully coming out. Scully is once again wearing her bikini and a flower print wrap around skirt.
SCULLY
(happy)
Now this is a swimming pool.
MONICA
I thought you’d appreciate it.
(beat) Hey boys, what are you doing?
ANTONIO
Just having a conversation.
SCULLY
See John, this is a clean pool.Scully gives John a smile, he laughs, knowing what an idiot he was to jump into the dirty pool yesterday.
Scully takes off her little wrap around skirt, this catches both John and Antonio’s attention. Scully turns to them happy.
SCULLY
It’s winter and I get
to swim outside. We
should do this more often.Scully dives into the pool, enjoying the fresh water. Monica sits down next to Antonio. Antonio turns to Doggett.
ANTONIO
So, are you and Dana a thing?
DOGGETT
Why? Are you interested?
ANTONIO
Well, look at her.Antonio and Doggett turn their attention to Scully who is floating on her back in the pool.
DOGGETT
No, we’re not together.
ANTONIO
Way I hear it, you want to be.
DOGGETT
Who told you that?
ANTONIO
Monica did. (beat) Well, do you?
DOGGETT
Do I what?
ANTONIO
Want to be with her.
DOGGETT
(scratching the back of his neck)
Well… yeah.
ANTONIO
Then why haven’t you
asked her out?
DOGGETT
I’m waiting for the right-
ANTONIO
-Still not over those settings, huh?
DOGGETT
I just want it to be right.
ANTONIO
If it’s meant to be, then
how could you go wrong?
Doggett thinks about this. Antonio turns to Monica.
ANTONIO
So, you have a month off,
what are you going to do?
MONICA
Well, seeing Grandmama was
a part of what I’ll be doing.
Other than that, I don’t know.
Maybe move some things around.
ANOTNIO
Move things around?
MONICA
Yeah.She gives him a smile.
ANTONIO
You wouldn’t be moving
to a new apartment, would you?He gives her a sly smile.
MONICA
What do you mean by that?
ANTONIO
Nothing. I’m just jokin’ around.Monica looks at him suspiciously, wondering how much he knows about her and Brad.
