"Fox & Rat" Virtual Series - Season Seven

Review By: Gothic Spook

"Is it just me or is the Bureau getting more corrupt by the minute?" - Doggett

I don’t think it is just John. Who agrees? Raise your hand! Okay in this episode Mulder is interrogated ... it doesn't end with smiles. Skinner and Kim get to “business” in his office ... while three Agents are watching. But be warned this episode isn't full of laughter and humour, but also darkness and pain. Be prepared to be afraid and disgusted in this painful episode. Please take note of the rating and warning!

FADE IN:

INT – FBI WORKOUT ROOM – 6 A.M.
MAY 5, 2004

Though it is early in the morning, Madonna’s “Burning Up” is blaring through the stereo speaker system. John Doggett and Kim Cook are the only two FBI employees working out. Doggett is at the bench press, burning it up. Kim is doing a Jane Fonda workout, she’s jogging in place in front of a television set.

Kim’s eye catch Doggett in the mirror, he’s struggling a little bit with the bench press.

KIM
Need help with that, Agent Doggett?

She doesn’t break from jogging and she is nowhere near being out of breath. Doggett puts the bar on the collars and sits up. He’s sweating quite a bit – he’s been here longer than Kim. He strips off his white FBI T-shirt, and uses it to wipe sweat from his face.

DOGGETT
That’s all right, Kim. I was
just finishing up anyway.

Kim stops jogging and rests her hands on her hips. John doesn’t look very well. His eyes are tired and red.

KIM
Are you ok? You look a
little flushed.

Doggett stands up, Kim makes notice of how well built his body is. It’s obvious that he works out on a regular basis. Why does he seem so exhausted? How long has he been here already this morning?

DOGGETT
There’s nothing to worry about.
I find it easier to cope with things
when I work out.

Kim realizes that he’s having a hard time dealing with Scully and Monica’s deaths.

KIM
I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have
said anything.

Doggett sits down on a bench near the dumbbells.

DOGGETT
Do you need me to spot you on anything?

KIM
I don’t bench press. I stick
to the dumbbells.

Kim grabs a 15 pound dumbbell and sits next to Doggett on the bench.

DOGGETT
Do you usually come here alone?

KIM
No, typically Walter comes with me.

DOGGETT
Where’s he today?

KIM
Being nervous.

DOGGETT
Nervous about what?

KIM
He has one of those FBI required
physical exams today. He thinks
he’s going to fail it.

SUDDENLY! The doors to the workout room fly open! Krycek, Mulder and Diana come rushing in.

KRYCEK
Leave me alone!

DIANA
But I thought you like attention
from the opposite sex.

KRYCEK
Not when you’re picking on me!

Mulder spots Doggett and Kim. He walks over to them and joins them on the bench. Doggett notices that Krycek’s knees, elbows and chin are scraped up – bleeding.

DOGGETT
Alex, what happened to you?

MULDER
He refused to wear Velcro shoes.

Mulder wiggles his foot in front of him and points to his grown-up Velcro shoes. Doggett raises an eyebrow.

DOGGETT
Mulder, Velcro is for kids.
My son was the only person
I knew that wore Velcro. I’m
not even sure Velcro is popular
among children today.

MULDER
I know, but Velcro buckle shoes
are the best shoes to wear when
you go biking.

KIM
Biking?

Doggett and Kim look at Krycek, he’s wearing florescent orange and green biker shorts. Diana smirks at him.

DIANA
Sasha, do you want me to tell
them what happened or do you
want to tell the grisly story?

KRYCEK
I don’t know what you’re talking about.

DIANA
Have it your way.

Diana sits down on the floor in front of Mulder, Doggett and Kim. She stretches her leg out in front of her to stretch.

DIANA
So we get up this morning and
decide that instead of driving
a car to come to work out, that
we’d rather ride bikes.

MULDER
(giggling)
Keep going.

In the background, Krycek is sneering at them and continues to add a lot of weight to the leg press. He sits down and attempts to press all the weight. All he can do is grunt and moan. The weights don’t budge.

DIANA
Mulder warns Alex of the dangers
of shoe laces getting wound up in
the peddles and in spite of Mulder’s
kind warning, Alex decides not to
wear Velcro shoes, but rather his
regular laced shoes.

DOGGETT
I have a feeling this story is about
to turn from odd to just plain weird.

MULDER
(giddy)
Tell them the best part!

DIANA
To prove Mulder is wrong, and that
shoe laces don’t get wound up in
bike peddles –

KRYCEK
-Shut up wench! –

DIANA
- he purposely chooses to not
tie his shoe laces. I’m sure you all
can guess what happens next.

DOGGETT
Within a few moments he falls
down because his laces got
wound up?

DIANA
Not quite.

Krycek walks over to them, looking damn proud.

KRYCEK
I was Da Man! I was cruisin’
down a hill, no winding up
of shoe laces whatsoever.

MULDER
Then his laces dragged on the ground
too close to a bike tire and he fliped
heels and bike over head!

DIANA
It was a good thing he was wearing
a helmet, otherwise more brain
cells would have died in that little
head of his.

MULDER
And he doesn’t need to go brain
dead on us anymore than he
already is.

KRYCEK
Hey! That spill only proves I’m
more of a man than you! I didn’t cry!

MULDER
Yeah, you cried. A lot.

KRYCEK
Those were happy tears.

DIANA
Happy tears?

KRYCEK
Because I proved that the laces
wouldn’t get wound up in the
peddles. I’m right! You’re wrong!
Nyah! Nyah! Nyah! Marita loves
me, not you! Nyah!

Krycek sticks his tongue out at Mulder. Doggett stands up.

DOGGETT
I have to go now.

KIM
Me too.

Mulder waves goodbye to them.

MULDER
Bye! Bye! I’ll see you in the
office later today!

Doggett and Kim exit the workout room.

DOGGETT
If by any chance you can influence
Walter, please, have him partner me
with Agent Fowley.

CUT TO:

INT – STRUGHOLD RESEARCH FACILITY – SCULLY’S QUARTERS – 6:30 A.M.

Scully is peacefully sleeping in bed. She lies on her side, the thin white sheet rests on her waist. Her eyes slowly open when she hears a really really loud humming – buzzing noise. She gets out of bed and opens her door to look out into the hallway. John Montgomery walks quickly past her. He’s not happy.

SCULLY
John? What is that noise?

MONTGOMERY
Doctor Tsunimoto got back from
vacation last night. He told me that
he bought a super power electronic
toothbrush. I’m guessing that’s what
the God awful noise is.

Montgomery bangs his fist on a door and an middle-aged Japanese man opens the door. He smiles wide at Montgomery, and the two men exchange words. Tsunimoto slams the door on Montgomery’s face. Montgomery lets out an angry sigh and walks back towards Scully.

MONTGOMERY
Watch out for his temper.

SCULLY
John… is there any way I can
take Monica outside today? Kind
of a way for her to celebrate Cinco de Mayo?

MONTGOMERY
I’m not sure that’s a good idea.
She’s a high risk test subject
right now. I guess since she’s your
friend that you don’t have to test
on her today.

Montgomery walks away. Scully shuts the door to her room and looks at her phone. Perhaps she can make calls outside the facility. She picks up the receiver to call the FBI in Washington, D.C. There has to be a way to get Monica out of here before anyone realizes that she is not going to test on her friend. She puts the receiver to her ear.

OPERATOR
Where may I direct your call?

Crap! She can’t dial outside of this place. Scully hangs up without saying a word. She had better get ready for the day. She won’t “test” on Monica today, not ever. How is she ever going to get away with pulling that off – surely other doctors will realize that Monica is showing no signs of having been infected with the alien virus and the weak vaccine. She doesn’t want to think of this now, she wants to help Monica enjoy Cinco de Mayo. She hopes that she can find a way to inform Monica that she is going to be all right, that she will do everything in her power to protect her until she can find a way to get her out of this place.

TIME CUT:

INT – STRUGHOLD RESEARCH FACILITY – DINING HALL – 8 A.M.

Scully still feels like an outsider at this place, even after a month and a half. She sits alone to enjoy her breakfast. At least this food is better than what she remembers her college’s food to be – still isn’t very good though.

CIGARETTE-SMOKING MAN
May I join you?

Scully looks up at the CSM, he’s carrying a tray of food and wearing a sweet smile on his face.

SCULLY
Sure.

Scully is unsure of his intentions. He sits down.

CIGARETTE-SMOKING MAN
Are you adjusting well?

SCULLY
As best as I can when I’d
rather be someplace else.

CIGARETTE-SMOKING MAN
How would you like to accompany
me to dinner tonight?

He touches her hand and lowers his voice.

CIGARETTE-SMOKING MAN
Perhaps we can re-ignite the flame we
once had, before you decided
to leave The Project the first time.

Scully isn’t sure how she should respond to him. She doesn’t want to re-ignite any flame she once had with this man.

SCULLY
No, I’m not really feeling up
to going out tonight.

CIGARETTE-SMOKING MAN
I know this charming little Mexican
restaurant in New York City. I think
we’d both enjoy the relaxed atmosphere.

SCULLY
I said no, but thank you for considering me.

CIGARETTE-SMOKING MAN
How can you say no to the man who made
sure you were given the best quarters in
this facility? You never struck me as a
woman who would be so inconsiderate.

Scully can’t believe what he is accusing her of being.

SCULLY
I’m not inconsiderate-

CIGARETTE-SMOKING MAN
- So you’ll join me?

Scully hesitates – she has a gut feeling that he is up to no good, but how can she let him call her inconsiderate when she is very considerate of all that he’s given her in terms of comfort now that she’s at the facility.

SCULLY
I don’t have anything nice to wear.

CIGARETTE-SMOKING MAN
Then I’ll go out and buy you something
special. I’ll pick you up at your quarters at seven.

SCULLY
All right.

The CSM digs his spoon into a bowl of Coco Puffs cereal and eats it.

CIGARETTE-SMOKING MAN
How is your research coming?

SCULLY
I haven’t exactly been able to start
testing yet. My main test subject was
pregnant. I’m waiting until she fully
recovers from her abortion before proceeding.

CIGARETTE-SMOKING MAN
(he smiles)
I see. You know, maybe one day you
and I will conceive a child.

Scully laughs, that’s ridiculous.

SCULLY
Sure, for me to conceive a child a
miracle would have to happen. You and
I would have to be in a relationship and
I’d have to be willing to spend my life
with you. None of that is ever going to happen.

CIGARETTE-SMOKING MAN
Never say never, my dear.

He winks at her and then drinks from his coffee mug.

CUT TO:

INT- SKINNER’S OFFICE – 10 A.M.

Skinner is dumbfounded. He recounts all the IHOW (International House of Waffles) doggy bags on his desk. One, two, three, four, five, six. He scratches the top of his head.

SKINNER
But where’s seven and eight?

He hits a button on his intercom.

SKINNER
Kim, can you call Agents Doggett
and Fowley to my office?

KIM
Is this about what I talked to you
about earlier today?

SKINNER
Yes.

Skinner stands up and paces behind his desk, wondering where the rest of his carry-out waffles went.

Kim walks into Skinner’s office.

KIM
Sir, neither one of them are
answering the phone in their offices.

SKINNER
Oh. Ok… I guess I’ll give them
a call on their cell phones.

Skinner sits down at his desk and digs into his desk drawer. He pulls out a tennis ball. He tosses it in the air and catches it in one hand as he dials John Doggett’s cell phone.

CUT TO:

INT – MULDER/KRYCEK’S OFFICE – CONTINUOUS

Mulder is speaking in front of his audience: Doggett, Krycek, Diana and the Janitor. He holds an International House of Waffles doggy bag in his hand. He digs in and pulls out a lukewarm waffle and munches on it as he speaks.

MULDER
… and so I say to you, Super Buddies.
I believe our goal of achieving world
peace is fast approaching. We are stronger
and more determined than ever.

Doggett’s cell phone rings.

MULDER
(to Doggett)
Don’t you pick that up! I’m practicing!

Doggett gives Mulder a look as he steps outside the office to answer his phone.

DOGGETT
This is Agent Doggett.

SKINNER
When was the last time you had
a physical exam for the Bureau?

DOGGETT
Last August, why?

SKINNER
I’m due for one later this afternoon.
I’m worried that I haven’t kept in
shape since my last exam six months ago.
(beat) Would you like to go to the exam
and pretend to be me?

Doggett laughs, believing Skinner to be kidding with him.

DOGGETT
(joking)
You must be lookin’ to loose your job, huh?

SKINNER
That’s not funny and I’m not kidding.

DOGGETT
I’m sorry sir, but I can’t pretend
to be you. Last I heard, impersonating
a federal agent is a felony.

Skinner sighs, he’s tired of this conversation.

SKINNER
I guess I got carried away enjoying
Kim’s company that I forgot to
workout every day. My arms are a little
flabby. (beat) Maybe I miss Dana too…

Hearing Scully’s name drives pain straight through Doggett’s heart. He doesn’t know what to say to Skinner.

SKINNER
(sad)
I know you and her had something
going on, but I know that I still
love her too. If she were still with us
I know she and I would have ended
up with one another eventually. She
would have found some flaw in you
that would have made her leave you.

DOGGETT
Sir, I don’t mean to be rude, but would
you mind not talking about Dana please.

SKINNER
I’m sorry. (beat) Oh! Before I forget, I’ve
decided who your new partner is going to
be. Could you and Agent Fowley be in my
office in the next few minutes? I have your
first assignment ready.

DOGGETT
Thank you sir, we’ll be right up.

Doggett hears a loud crash and a yelp on Wally’s end of the phone.

DOGGETT
What was that?

SKINNER
(embarrassed/ panic)
Uh-oh! Gotta go!

The phone goes dead. Doggett looks at the receiver and hangs up. Strange things always seem to be afloat on the Good Ship FBI. Doggett goes back into Mulder’s office to get Diana so they can finally work on a case.

INT – SKINNER’S OFFICE

Skinner’s chair has flipped and on the ground. Walter is still “seated” in the chair, his legs in the air. We see his tennis ball next to his head.

Kim pokes her head into his office – she heard the loud crash and yelp.

KIM
Walter…?

She goes around behind his desk and sees him lying on the ground.

SKINNER
I was on the phone and I was trying
to balance a tennis ball on my nose.
You know, acting like Pete Sampras.

KIM
I doubt a Wimbledon champion
balances tennis balls on his nose
in the off-season. Are you all right?

SKINNER
Yeah… just hurt my back a little.

KIM
Then it’s a good thing you’re
going to see a doctor later today.

She picks up his chair and sets it upright. Skinner sits in his chair and sighs.

SKINNER
Maybe I’m getting too old for this job.
In June I’ll be 52. I should be thinking
of a relaxing retirement, not worrying
about being a little overweight and
out-of-shape according to FBI standards.

Kim places her hand on his shoulder. There’s a knock on the office door.

SKINNER
Come in!

Doggett and Diana enter the office. Kim passes by them and whispers:

KIM
Don’t let him get into a Wimbledon
conversation. I don’t think he’s too
far off from wanting to play competitive tennis.

Doggett is pained by this. He and Diana take seats in front of Skinner’s desk.

SKINNER
Good morning agents.

DIANA
Good morning, sir.

SKINNER
As you two know, you are now assigned
as partners in the X-Files Division. So I
have for you a real X-File case. The case
of the missing IHOW waffle doggy bags.

Skinner points at his conference table. He points specifically at the 6 IHOW doggy bags.

SKINNER
There are supposed to be eight
IHOW doggy bags, not six. I need
you two to investigate where the
missing two have gone.

Doggett and Diana exchange doubtful glances. Skinner notices.

SKINNER
(serious)
You doubt the authenticity of this case?

DOGGETT
No, sir.

SKINNER
Good. If you happen to locate the missing
doggy bags, return them to me immediately.
I expect a thorough investigation and a
detailed case report on my desk by tomorrow morning.

DIANA
Yes, sir.

She and Doggett stand up and leave Skinner’s office.

DOGGETT
Is he serious about this?

DIANA
I’m not sure, but we should look
into it just incase he is testing us as partners.

DOGGETT
Didn’t Mulder have waffles in his office?

DIANA
Yes.

DOGGETT
I guess we may have already found our culprit.

DIANA
It’ll be fun to interrogate him.
Let’s make him really nervous.

DOGGETT
Well, I guess that beats being
bored all day due to having nothing to do.

Doggett and Diana step into the elevator and head back down to the basement offices to investigate The Case of the Missing IHOW Doggy Bags. They’ll be taking pictures and searching for trace evidence in Mulder and Krycek’s office. They better make sure that Mulder acted alone in stealing Skinner’s waffles, and if he didn’t they should look into who could have helped him (Krycek). The elevator doors close.

CUT TO:

INT – UNITED NATIONS – 11 A.M.

Marita is sitting at her desk, she’s on the phone. Her pet cat, Kitty, walks on the window ledge behind her.

MARITA
But daddy. I want to visit Dana.
Dr. Peterson says I need to come to
terms with past issues before I can
reach the next stage of progression.

Marita rolls her eyes.

MARITA
Of course I know where she is. (beat)
No, I know I can’t try to get her out.
That would be the right thing to do.

Marita reaches into a desk drawer and pulls out lime green finger nail polish (with glitter). She kicks off her shoes and removes her knee-highs. She begins painting her toe nails lime green.

MARITA
(shocked/surprised)
You’re what?!

Marita’s hand knocks over the finger nail polish. Her jaw is wide open.

MARITA
Please tell me that Dana didn’t know
this all along and that I’m the last to know.
(beat) You’re right, she would have flipped
out if you and Maggie told her that. (beat)
Does this mean Dana and I are going to be step-sisters?

Marita smiles, thinking how nice it will be to have a sister other than her own twin sister, Maria.

Kitty jumps onto her desk and purrs at her.

MARITA
If I go visit Dana, can I tell her that
you and her mom are engaged?

Kitty purrs at Marita again, begging for attention.

MARITA
Daddy, I’ve got to go now.
I need to go return something to someone.

She hangs up and puts her shoe back on. She grabs Kitty and leaves her office.

TIME CUT TO:

EXT – SUBURBAN HOME – GEORGETOWN, VA – 11:30 A.M.

Marita pulls up into the driveway. She is driving Scully’s car. She gets out, carrying Kitty in her arms. She walks up to the front door and rings the doorbell. A moment later a woman answers.

WOMAN
Yes?

MARITA
I think I have someone you’ve
been missing.

Marita holds Kitty out towards the woman.

WOMAN
(happy)
Oh my God! Odie!

The Woman takes the cat into her arms and kisses the top of its head. The cat purrs, and rubs its face against the woman’s.

WOMAN
Thank you so much. Where
did you find him?

Marita looks down at her feet, feeling guilty.

MARITA
I’ve had mental issues in the past
and about two years ago, I was
walking in this neighborhood and
I saw your cat. So I took him home
so I could have a companion.

WOMAN
You hateful woman! Stealing the pet
of a young child! I hope someone commits you.

The woman goes back into her house and slams the door shut. Marita hesitates to knock again, but does not. She turns around and goes back to Scully’s car and drives away. It is good for her to come to terms with things she has done in the past that have hurt other people. She should go home and pack up some of Scully’s personal belongings – things Scully wouldn’t want to live without. After she’s done that she’d take them over to Doggett’s. He may not know that Scully is alive, but at least giving her things to someone else instead of throwing them away is nicer. Plus who knows… maybe one day Scully will be able to get out of the facility. She’d love to have some of her things again.

CUT TO:

INT- STRUGHOLD RESEARCH FACILITY – MONICA’S CELL – 1:17 P.M.

Monica is lying down on her hard bed. Her eyes are red from crying. Her hand rests on her stomach, wishing that she was still carrying hers and Brad’s unborn child. Her skin is cold and damp. She shivers.

Her mind is constantly thinking of trying to find a way to escape from this facility. She has to get home to Brad. She longs for the comfort of friends, but she has none here.

She hears a loud metallic clank as the door to her cell opens. Scully walks in.

Monica quickly sits up, wiping her eyes dry. Monica glances at the open door to her cell. She could take a run for it if she tried hard enough. Monica looks at Scully – her back is to her, she’s filling a glass with water.

Scully doesn’t know what to say to Monica. They have not spoken a word to each other since Monica’s forced abortion. Scully knows that Monica must hate her now. She wants to treat Monica the best she can under the circumstances.

Scully turns around and walks toward Monica to give her the glass of water.

SCULLY
How are you feeling today?

Monica jumps off of the bed and knocks Scully hard to the floor. She runs out the door and into the main lab. She looks both ways and sees a door marked “EXIT”. She runs toward it, uncertain of where she needs to go to escape this place.

She crashes through the door and enters a bright white hallway, it’s warm now.

Monica’s bare feet splat on the pristine white tile floor. The loud emergency siren signals to facility security that she has escaped the testing lab.

MONICA
Shit!

She rounds a corner and runs right smack into Knowle Rohrer. She looks at him, wide-eyed.

KNOWLE
(surprised)
Monica?

MONICA
Knowle, get me out of here!

She grabs hold of his arm and tries to run off with him. However, he stops her. They hear voices of heavily armed men, yelling as they run toward their location.

KNOWLE
(serious)
Monica, don’t do this. Not like this.
This is not safe. I don’t doubt
that they will kill you.

Monica looks at him, sadness, pain, and anger showing through her eyes.

Scully rounds the corner, several security officers are right behind her.

Knowle aggressively grabs Monica around the waist. She struggles to get away, but he’s too strong for her.

KNOWLE
(to Scully)
Is this what all the alarms are for?

Scully looks at him suspiciously, she’s never seen him in the facility before.

SCULLY
(commanding)
Hand her over to my men.

Scully gives Monica a hard glare, letting her know that this behaviour could be severely punished. A security officer takes hold of Monica and forcefully leads her back to her testing cell. Monica looks back at Knowle, wanting him to help her.

Scully waves her hands at the other security officers to dismiss them. She steps toward Knowle.

SCULLY
Do you have authorization to
be in this area?

KNOWLE
No one stopped to check my clearance.
I wasn’t aware any further verification
was needed to be down here.

SCULLY
(authoritative)
You shouldn’t be here. (beat)
It takes a pass card and security
code to reach this level.

KNOWLE
I’ve got a pass card.

Knowle makes eye contact with Scully, trying to be intimidating.

KNOWLE
Nowhere was I asked to provide
a security code.

He lies – Marita Covarrubias gave him the security clearance code a little while back.

SCULLY
I asked you to leave, sir.

She glares at him intensely, trying to match his intimidation.

KNOWLE
I know who you are, and I know
you’ve been taken by the men here.

SCULLY
(lying)
I don’t know what you’re talking about.

Inside, she is screaming for help. She wants to leave this place, she wants to help Monica. However, she doesn’t know who this man is and if he was sent to set her up to reveal her true feelings about being here and about not really testing on Monica. What if the CSM sent him to spy on her? She can’t let him know what she really feels.

KNOWLE
That’s bullshit. (beat) I can
help you get out-

SCULLY
– I asked you to leave. You have
no authorization to be here.

Knowle doesn’t budge. He stares at her. He can’t help but think that maybe they were wrong and she’s here on her own free will, hurting Monica. He glares into her eyes.

Scully’s had enough of him not cooperating. She goes over to a security phone and picks it up. Knowle immediately grabs her and pulls her away from the phone. He slams her back hard into a wall, knocking the wind right out of her.

KNOWLE
Listen here, Ms. Scully. Stop this
bullshit and let Monica go. You
don’t need her. I’ll get her out of here,
and if snapping your neck right now
helps me accomplish that, all the
more power to me.

Scully is terrified of Knowle – his grip on her hurts and her back is sure to be bruised. She believes him when he says that he has no hesitation in killing her in order to get Monica out. She wonders why this man is so passionate about Monica and her safety. She’s never seen him before and she’s sure if he were close to Monica, she would have mentioned him at some point. She hadn’t.

Scully is about to speak up to explain to him the situation, but suddenly the CSM rounds the corner. He sees Knowle holding Scully against the wall.

CIGARETTE-SMOKING MAN
What is this?

The CSM pulls Knowle off of Scully.

CIGARETTE-SMOKING MAN
(to Knowle)
What are you doing?

Scully wraps her arms around her waist and shuts her eyes to keep her tears from falling.

KNOWLE
(thinking fast)
There ain’t nothing like a
beautiful woman to bring
pleasure to a man of the government.

Knowle winks at Scully – further progressing her discomfort with him. The CSM slaps Knowle across the face.

CIGARETTE-SMOKING MAN
She is not yours to touch.

The CSM walks over to the security phone on the wall and presses the security button.

CIGARETTE-SMOKING MAN
What is your name?

KNOWLE
Knowle Rohrer. I’m with the DOD.
I’m here making a delivery. I must
have got turned around and ended up here.

CIGARETTE-SMOKING MAN
How’d you get the security code?

KNOWLE
Hey look! That’s not my fault man!
You should put more security personel
in this area if you have problems with
doors being left open.

A security officer arrives.

CIGARETTE-SMOKING MAN
Take this man away and see to it that
he understands the consequences should
he ever return to this location. (beat) This
is the last time he’ll be making any
deliveries here.

The security officer nods his head and forces Knowle out of the testing area.

The CSM turns to Scully to see if she is all right. She is still up against the wall, quiet.

CIGARETTE-SMOKING MAN
(gentle, loving, caring)
Dana…

He walks up to her and gently touches the side of her face, wiping a tear away.

CIGARETTE-SMOKING MAN
Don’t worry, no one will hurt you
as long as I am at your side.

He holds her chin in his hand and tilts her head up. He gives her a soft kiss on the lips. This throws Scully off-guard, it scares her, threatens her. The CSM removes his lips from hers and gives her a smug grin.

CIGARETTE-SMOKING MAN
Best to get back to work, doctor.
I’ll see you later tonight.

He touches her shoulder and walks away.

Scully takes a deep breath to regain her composure. She heads back to the testing lab – running Knowle’s words through her mind. Perhaps she can find a way to help Monica get out of this place. She wants her to get home safely. No matter how she goes about that, she knows for certain that Monica cannot attempt to escape on her own – the result could be fatal.

Scully enters the lab, stopping by the sink to splash her face with cool water. She washes away her encounter with Knowle Rohrer and an unwanted encounter by the CSM.

She walks back into Monica’s cell and is surprised to see Marita inside, talking with Monica.

SCULLY
Miss Covarrbias?

Marita turns around, a huge smile on her face.

MARITA
Oh Dana! I was wondering
when you’d come back.

SCULLY
What are you doing here?

MARITA
I’m wishing Monica a
happy Cinco de Mayo.

Scully is hurt by this – she can’t even imagine how Monica must feel. She gives Marita a look and heads out of the cell. Marita follows. Scully locks Monica’s cell behind her.

MARITA
I need your help. I want to
dye my hair red and I don’t
know how to do it.

Scully is confused.

SCULLY
You came here for that? (beat)
What’s wrong with blond?

MARITA
A certain someone wants me to
make a change. John just prefers
redheads.

SCULLY
I don’t have time to dye your
hair, Marita.

Marita pouts and walks away. Scully watches her. Marita is the only person who can answer any questions she has about those she cares for outside the parameter of this facility.

SCULLY
Marita?

Marita stops and turns around.

SCULLY
(quiet)
How is John doing?

MARITA
(smirks)
Wouldn’t you like to know.

Marita turns around and walks out, leaving Scully feeling heartbroken and worried that Marita has manipulated John Doggett into a relationship with her. Scully returns to Monica, to talk with her seriously about not trying to escape again. “Happy” Cinco de Mayo indeed.

CUT TO:

INT – INTERROGATION ROOM – FBI HEADQUARTERS – 2:43 P.M.

Fox Mulder sits alone in the Interrogation room, for setting-the-mood purposes, the room is dimly lit – a hot light shines down on Mulder, making him sweat in his seat (and his interrogation hasn’t even begun).

The door opens and John Doggett and Diana Fowley enter the room. Diana takes a seat in front of Mulder. Doggett stands in a dark corner. He’s holding a paper cup of coffee. He stirs the coffee with his plastic straw, it scrapes on the edges of the cup.

Mulder is shit-faced scared and could possibly have pissed his pants by now. His lower lip quivers.

MULDER
Wh-what have I done?

DIANA
I think you know what you’ve done.

Mulder shakes his head “no”. He has no idea why he’s being interrogated.

Doggett steps forward. He sets his cup of coffee down on the table. He places both hands on the table in front of Mulder, he leans down to see eye-to-eye with Mulder.

DOGGETT
We all know what you’ve
done, Agent Mulder. All we’ve
got to do now is find out if you’ve
acted alone or if you had an accomplice.

MULDER
All I did was talk about Super Bud-

Doggett slams his hand as hard as he can on the table surface. Mulder jumps in his seat, scared stupid.

DOGGETT
Don’t fucking bullshit with us,
Agent Mulder. You know what
you did and you are the only one
who can tell us if you were alone in your actions!

Mulder starts crying uncontrollably. Doggett looks to Diana, pointing in disbelief at Mulder. Diana stands up to speak into his ear.

DIANA
John, you will want to cool the
third degree crap. Mulder can’t
handle that kind of intimidation.
We don’t want to traumatize him.
I don’t think either Alex or I want
to deal with any PTSD crap with him.

DOGGETT
How do we fix him?

Diana calmly takes a seat and gives John a look that tells him to go stand in the corner again. She leans in closer to Mulder and takes his hand in hers.

DIANA
(sweet, kind, loving, soft, like a teddy bear)
Fox…

Mulder moans in fear through his tears, he is happy to see she is being nice to him.

DIANA
What Agent Doggett and I need
to know is if you stole Assistant
Director Skinner’s IHOW doggy bags.
(beat) I know I saw you eating IHOW
waffles earlier today and if you took
his food, that’s all right, you’re not in
any trouble. (beat) Tell me the truth, Fox.
That’s the one thing that I know you always do.
Tell the truth.

Mulder has stopped crying. He sniffles and wipes his nose with the sleeve of his shirt.

MULDER
The truth. I love the truth.

In the background, Doggett rolls his eyes.

DOGGETT
Aw, c’mon Agent Mulder.
Fess up and we’ll let you go.

DIANA
Agent Doggett, let me handle this.
(beat) Fox…?

MULDER
Yes, I stole Cueball’s waffles.

DIANA
Can you tell me why you stole his waffles?

MULDER
Alex he… he… he… he was
hungry and… and… he dared
me to do it. (sniffles) Wally had
eight doggy bags, I didn’t
think he’d notice if I took two. One
for Alex and one for me.

Mulder breaks down crying again. Diana looks back at Doggett.

DOGGETT
(holds his cup of coffee up)
I wish this were spiked.

He takes a long drink from the cup. Diana looks back at Mulder.

DIANA
Fox, it’s all right. I already told
you that you’re not in any trouble.
Thank you for being honest with us.

MULDER
Agent Doggett scared me.

DIANA
I know he did and he’s sorry.

MULDER
Can we have a Patrick Swayze
movie marathon night tonight?
I think that will make me feel better.

DIANA
You know Fox, I have to go to
the store tonight.

MULDER
(disappointed)
Oh…

DIANA
But…

MULDER
(excited)
Oh?

DIANA
I just know that Alex loves
Patrick Swayze.

MULDER
(bashful)
Doesn’t he though.

Off of Doggett’s I-wish-this-frickin’-coffee-was-really-spiked look…

CUT TO:

INT – A.D. SIMON TURNER’S OFFICE – OPR – 3:16 P.M.

Skinner sits nervously in front of A.D. Simon Turner – a man who is just a few years over the hill and shows no obvious sign of balding. He seems to be incredibly serious as he looks over the results of Skinner’s biannual physical exam.

SIMON
(reading)
Unsatisfactory…

He sets the paperwork down in front of him and gives Skinner a disapproving look. This scares Skinner shitless.

SIMON
Assistant Director, you know very well
that the Bureau expects its agents to
remain in top physical condition at all
times during their employment.

SKINNER
Yes, sir.

SIMON
As head of the Office of Professional
Responsibility, it is my duty to recognize
problems within the FBI if they are not
brought to my attention by other agents.
So… we’ll just pretend I didn’t see that
your current condition is unsatisfactory, and
we can save us both time and paperwork.

Simon laughs, finding it slightly funny how uptight and worried Skinner was as he was acting all serious. Skinner cracks a smile – just getting that A.D. Turner was joking about being so serious.

SKINNER
Thank you, sir.

SIMON
Just try to improve before
your next exam please.

SKINNER
I’ll try.

Simon laughs.

SIMON
Maybe you need to have more
sex with your secretary.

The two men laugh again.

SKINNER
Then I better head back to my
office and do that, huh?

Skinner stands up and leaves Simon’s office. He runs down the hallway – sprinting to go to Kim and make passionate love to her on his conference table in his office. He dodges other agents and is trying not to be obvious that he is running.

He reaches his office, a bit out of breath. Kim smiles at him from behind her desk. She stands up.

KIM
Sir, Agents-

Skinner takes her in his arms and kisses her passionately, not giving her a chance to speak to him. He presses her body up against the door to his office. He untucks her shirt from her skirt. His other hand reaches for the doorknob and he opens his office door. They stumble into the office.

Skinner doesn’t see or notice, but Doggett, Diana and Krycek are in his office sitting in front of his desk. They have been waiting for him to return. Krycek watches on, glad that he’s seeing all this action first hand. Doggett and Diana are horrified with their superior’s behaviour.

Skinner lies Kim down on top of his conference table and removes his lips from hers for the first time since they began kissing. He grins at her as he begins unbuttoning her blouse.

KIM
(breathless)
Sir… Agents Doggett, Fowley,
and Krycek are here to see you.

The smile fades from Skinner’s face. He turns his head and sure enough! There they are! Skinner gets off of Kim and straightens out his clothing. Kim does so as well and then leaves the office, embarrassed.

SKINNER
I’m sorry. I didn’t see you in here.

KRYCEK
That’s fine by us, please continue.

Doggett rolls his eyes.

DOGGETT
Sir, Agent Fowley and I discovered that
Agent Mulder stole your two doggy bags
because Agent Krycek was hungry this
morning.

SKINNER
Did you bring them back?

DIANA
Unfortunately no, Mulder and Krycek
ate all the stolen waffles.

SKINNER
(disappointed)
What a waste of waffles.

Skinner looks at Krycek.

SKINNER
Why are you here?

KRYCEK
I’m here because I want to request
John Doggett as my partner. It’s
obvious when Mulder gets out of
hand that I only add to the chaos.
Also, we both know that Agent
Fowley can keep him under control
the best in a professional setting.

SKINNER
They’re in a romantic relationship though.

DIANA
Sir, though the FBI is strict about inter-Bureau
relationships, it is only seen as a problem
if a couple allows their relationship to become
a problem at work, in the field and in decision
making. Much like what we saw with you and Ms. Cook.

Skinner ignores that last comment.

SKINNER
If there are no other questions,
you’re dismissed.

Krycek raises his hand.

KRYCEK
So do we get to switch partners?

SKINNER
Yes, it’s official. Now go.

KRYCEK
I also wanted to report that I made
my way around the building today,
checking garbage cans for leprechauns.

Skinner, Doggett and Diana cringe at this. Krycek still feels the need to see if leprechauns are really being seen in garbage cans.

SKINNER
Good. That’s the kind of dedication
I like to see in your division, especially
after the success of your double homicide.

KRYCEK
(arrogant)
That’s right. I’m a G.D.I.

SKINNER
Right. (beat) You’re dismissed.

Doggett, Diana and Krycek leave the office. As they walk down the hallway, Krycek spots a pretty woman. His eyes light up.

KRYCEK
See you two later!

He runs off after the woman so he can flirt with her.

DOGGETT
Is it just me or is the Bureau
getting more corrupt by the minute?

DIANA
I’ve noticed that too.

They get into the elevator and head down to the basement. When the elevator doors open again, they are surprised to see rose petals and glitter all over the basement hallway. They share a look, unsure of what to make of this.

DIANA
Fox?

Marita dramatically steps out of Doggett’s office. She’s wearing an elegant red evening gown and her hair has been dyed… PINK!

MARITA
Hi Johnny… I’ve been
waiting for you…

She walks to him, swaying her hips, she wraps her arms around his neck and kisses him. She lingers passionately on his lips, weaving her tongue around his, running her hands through his hair. Doggett doesn’t know what to do, so he does and says nothing. Thankfully, Diana taps Marita’s shoulder, Marita stops kissing John, but keeps her arms around his neck.

DIANA
What are you doing, Marita?

MARITA
Stopping by to say hello
to my boyfriend.

Marita caresses the back of John’s neck with her fingers and giggles.

DIANA
I had no idea you two are dating.

MARITA
We are… and we’re sleeping together too.

DOGGETT
No. We’re not.

He removes Marita’s arms from around him.

MARITA
What are you doing, Johnny darling?

DOGGETT
The question should be, what are
you doing down here without a
visitor pass or a FBI escort?

Marita slaps him viciously across the face. He holds his hand to his face where she hit him, that hurt. She starts crying.

MARITA
I can’t believe you John! After
you declare your love for me in
a love lock last night! To just toss
me away as you have just done is
disrespectful! Your mother would
never approve of this!

Marita storms off, upset. Diana looks at John.

DIANA
Please tell me that was an
audio work of fiction, that
you’re not sleeping with her.

DOGGETT
Work of fiction. I’m not sure
where she gets her delusions.

DIANA
Or her pink hair.

Doggett looks at the rose petals and glitter on the ground.

DOGGETT
The janitor is not going
to appreciate this.

They go into their office, John sits at his desk.

DIANA
Are you doing anything special
tonight for Cinco de Mayo.

DOGGETT
Not this year, I’m gonna take some
time for myself tonight. Enjoy
some relaxation. Try to forget
some of today’s events.

Doggett laughs and begins typing his case report for Skinner.

TIME CUT TO:

EXT – STRUGHOLD RESEARCH FACILITY – RESIDENT’S HALL – SCULLY’S QUARTERS – 10:13 P.M.

The CSM and Scully are returning from their dinner date in New York City. They stand outside her door. Scully seems a bit tipsy – but not flat-ass drunk.

SCULLY
Thank you for treating me to
dinner tonight. It was nice to
get out of here for a change.

She unlocks her door. She may be tipsy, but she senses that the CSM wants to be invited inside. She turns to wish him a nice sleep, but instead he takes her in his arms and pulls her close to him. His hands grasp onto her waist and he leans toward her, inhaling her feminine scent. He whispers into her ear as one of his hands moves to her neck, his thumb gently stroking her skin.

CIGARETTE-SMOKING MAN
Let’s stop pretending, Dana…

He kisses her neck. His hand that rests on her waist moves up her back to start unzipping the black dress he bought her. Scully looks to be in mental anguish. If she refuses him, what could the consequences be?

CIGARETTE-SMOKING MAN
I love you, Dana…

He pushes her into her living quarters and shuts the door.

He presses the front of her body against the closed door as he continues removing her dress, kissing the bare skin of her back as he goes.

Her dress falls to the floor, around her ankles.

The CSM is glad that he bought a dress that would not allow her to wear a bra. He cups his hand over her breast, and presses his erection against her backside.

CIGARETTE-SMOKING MAN
Do you love me, Dana?

Scully nods her head “yes”, scared to answer him honestly. She does not love him, but he wants to hear otherwise.

CIGARETTE-SMOKING MAN
Tell me you love me.

Scully swallows hard and tears stream down her face. When she doesn’t answer him immediately, he turns her to face him.

CIGARETTE-SMOKING MAN
Tell me you love me, Dana.

He wipes the tears from her face, he knows full well what his advances on her are doing to her mind. He’s well aware of her history with Scott – the boyfriend she had in high school that sexually and physically abused her.

SCULLY
(hushed, terrified)
I love you.

(sensitive material begins here and ends with the next line of red text)

He kisses her again, passionately. He takes her hand and leads her to her bedroom. They lie down in bed. He slithers up next to her near naked body and hooks his thumb on her underwear and slides them off of her body. He rolls on top of her. Scully voluntarily spreads her legs for him and allows him to enter her. She knows that he expects her to respond positively to him. She does not want to risk him becoming violent with her.

She closes her eyes and bites her lower lip to conceal how revolted she is with this. She is terrified. Ever since arriving here two months ago, she feared the moment he would want to be sexual and intimate with her again. A whimper cries out from her mouth as he thrusts hard into her. Tears stream down her face as she feels her body responding to him sexually.

CIGARETTE-SMOKING MAN
(whispered arousal)
I love you, Dana…

He buries his face into her neck and sucks at her delicate skin.

She squeezes her eyes shut tighter and takes a deep breath in an attempt to take her mind back to a better time. She needs to disassociate herself from this situation, as a way to block this extreme trigger.

She wraps her arms around the CSM’s neck and moans his name.

SCULLY
Charles…

She grasps onto her wrist, touching the silver bracelet that John Doggett bought her for Christmas last year. She remembers how happy she had been thinking that he was going to ask her out and to be his girlfriend. What she wouldn’t give to be back at that time now.

Scully snaps back to reality when she feels the CSM’s warm semen flowing into her body. She quickly fakes an orgasm to prevent him from wanting to find other means to bring her to climax. She runs her hands through his sweaty hair. He rests his head on her chest as he catches his breath.

(sensitive material has ended, you may proceed)

Within a few minutes, the CSM gets off of her and redresses.

CIGARETTE-SMOKING MAN
Thank you for the nice evening, Dana.
I look forward to other nights alone
with you. (beat) Goodnight.

He exits her living quarters.

Scully rolls onto her side and lets out a loud cry as she falls out of bed and to the floor, in a quick scramble to make it into her bathroom. She falls to her knees in front of the toilet and throws up.

She rinses her mouth out with water and brushes her teeth. She takes an hour shower and then puts on her nightgown. She returns to bed. She rests her wrist on the pillow next to her.

Moonlight shines into her room from the window. She stares at the bracelet on her wrist. This bracelet symbolizes the bond she and John Doggett share with one another. It symbolizes their love for each other. It brings hope to her heart that one day everything will be all right, and she and Monica will return to Virginia. A single tear falls down her cheek and onto her pillow – it is a tear of both the horror she just experienced with the CSM and a tear of hope for the future.

What will John do if and when he remembers what really happened before she erased his memory? Would he remember that she and Monica are alive and didn’t die in a car accident? Is it possible he could remember the location of the Strughold Research Facility? Would he remember the feelings they shared as she held his hand as she injected him with the memory erase serum? Would he remember that she told him she loves him?

There’s no doubt in her mind that the CSM will again use her for sexual purposes. She needs to remain strong, not only for herself, but for Monica and Doggett as well. If the time ever comes where she can be with Doggett again, she does not want him to see her broken and torn apart. Though this is exactly what the CSM is doing to her.

Scully shuts her eyes to try to get some sleep. Her mind keeps replaying the events of tonight – could she have said ‘no’ to him and he would have listened? She doubts it, but she’d rather not take the risk of him being angry with her and raping her without her consent, or of him hurting Monica if she did not consent to his rape. A door closes somewhere else in the building, Scully jumps at the sound. She has been triggered by the CSM and there is no one she can turn to, no one she feels she can trust, no one to help her face her fears. Tonight and other nights, sleep will not come easy.

CUT TO:

INT – DOGGETT’S HOUSE – 10:29 P.M.

Doggett is sitting on his couch, wearing his reading glasses. He is reading through one of Scully’s medical books. Though he finds the subject hard to get into, he reads to occupy his mind of memories and thoughts of what could have been if he hadn’t been in a car accident with Dana and Monica.

He grabs a can of beer from the coaster on his coffee table. He drinks from it. He hasn’t had much to drink in his life, not since Christmas 1994. He promised himself then that he wouldn’t touch the stuff anymore in his life. He’s slipped a few times since then – mainly two times. The first: Las Vegas when he got annoyed with Skinner’s drunken jabber. The second: When he dipped back into an old bad habit of his when betting against Brad Follmer on a hockey game. Bad habits like to follow bad habits – alcohol followed his old gambling problem. He hasn’t gambled or placed any bets since then, and that is why he gave his money to Scully when they were in Vegas a couple years back, he didn’t want to accidentally sink back into that addiction. He drinks now to help himself deal with the deaths of the two people he felt closest to in his life: Dana Scully and Monica Reyes.

The headlights of a car pulling up in his driveway, shine through his living room window. He looks outside and sees Scully’s car. His heart skips a beat for a moment until his mind reminds him that she is dead.

There’s a soft knock on his door. He answers. He opens the door and sees Marita. Her hair is still pink from having tried to dye it red earlier that day. Marita is carrying a cardboard box marked “Important Dana Stuff”.

DOGGETT
Marita?

MARITA
Hi. I thought I’d bring over some
of Dana’s belongings. Clothing, jewelry,
yearbooks, photo albums and some diaries…

Marita walks past him and into his living room. Doggett shuts the door and follows her.

DOGGETT
Why bring me her things?

MARITA
Because you mean a lot to Dana. She
would want you to have some of this
stuff (coughs) Check the shoebox. (coughs)
Plus I’m planning on moving to a
smaller apartment within a few weeks or so.

Doggett raises an eyebrow – check a shoebox?

Marita sets the cardboard box down on the floor of his living room.

MARITA
I’m sure as I pack up my apartment
I’ll find some more things of hers. I’ll
bring them by as I find them. (beat)
I also want to apologize to you for my
behaviour earlier today. I’m sorry.

Doggett hesitates to accept her apology. He thinks this could be one of her tricks. Marita waits calmly for him to reply.

DOGGETT
Apology accepted.

Marita smiles.

MARITA
Thank you… but honestly, if you
ever want to go out on a date with
me, I’m more than willing.

DOGGETT
I’m not ready for a relationship, Marita.
I know I don’t want one with you. Hell,
I’m not sure I ever will be ready.

Marita feels anger and jealousy burning up inside of her. She bites her lower lip to keep from overreacting.

MARITA
(getting upset)
Why? Is it because I’m not Dana?
Is it because the red hair dye wasn’t
for blonds and my hair went pink.
I’m trying to be someone you can love, John!

She slaps him across the face and starts “crying”. Doggett does not respond or react to her slap or her “crying”.

DOGGETT
I feel sorry for you, Marita. Always trying
to be something that you’re not. Not
following your heart, instead you plot
the pain of others, inevitably the pain in yourself.

Marita stops “crying” and looks at him. She knows he speaks the truth.

DOGGETT
You can leave now. (beat/sincere)
Thank you for bringing me Dana’s things.

Marita doesn’t know what to say to him. Previously she would have purposely thrown a hissy fit, but that doesn’t seem right now. She runs her hand through her hair and heads to the door and stops.

MARITA
(soft)
I’m sorry.

She leaves his house, shutting the door quietly.

Doggett sits down on his couch and opens the cardboard box. He lets out a soft chuckle when he pulls out several diaries. That’s so “Dana”. He pulls out a photo album and flips through it – family pictures. She was a cute little girl – a tomboy – he would have never guessed that. He sets the photo album down on his coffee table. He sees a shoe box and pulls it out. Marita obviously alerted him to this, he wonders why.

In marker, on the shoe box is “To my husband” – written in child-like handwriting. He opens the shoe box and sees handwritten letters. He pulls one out. It’s dated June 1982.

Dear My Husband,

I love you and I’m happy that you enjoyed our wedding in Hawaii, despite not liking the ocean. I appreciate you dealing with all my quirks. Not many people do. Especially my big brother Bill. So if I’m on a business trip one day and you miss me, just place your hand on the tracing of my hand on the other side of this paper and we will be connected.

Love,
Dana

Doggett smiles with tears in his eyes. He flips the paper over and sees a tracing of a little hand. He places his left hand on it – a sad smile on his face. He closes his eyes and pretends that Scully’s soul on the other side knows that he is doing this. He hopes that she knows how much he loves her. He wipes the tears from his eyes and puts the letter back in the shoebox. He sets it down on the coffee table. He pulls out a bulky sweatshirt that says “Colorado”. He holds it in his hands and wonders if she bought it on the trip to Colorado back in 2001 – when they picked Buddy up on the side of a highway, or the second time they went out there last November when they went winter camping in the mountains.

He lies down on the couch, tucking the sweatshirt under his head and neck for support. He closes his eyes and sighs. The sweatshirt smells like her – spring flowers. It brings back fond memories of time they spent together right before the accident. The time he finally opened up to someone about why he blames himself for Luke’s murder, something he doesn’t feel he can tell anyone else. They bonded almost completely that night – he’s never felt closer to anyone else in his life. There’s so much more that he hasn’t told anyone that he wanted to tell her, but now he is left alone.

John squeezes his eyes shut, trying not to cry. He’s unsuccessful. His tears fall freely onto Scully’s sweatshirt as he cries himself to sleep.
