Summary: Doggett
and Krycek investigate a haunted hotel in Charleston, South Carolina
on the Fourth of July.
FADE IN:
CHARLESTON, SOUTH CAROLINA
2 JULY 2004
INT. CODWELL INN – NIGHT
The Codwell Inn is a family owned hotel
that has been in the family for ages. The lobby is decorated in a
home-style feel to let the guests feel relaxed while on vacation.
The front desk is festively decorated with patriotic streamers and
other such items to help celebrate the Fourth of July.
A family of four enters the hotel lobby
and approaches the front desk. A nice elderly couple greets them with
a warm southern smile.
JERRY CODWELL
Welcome to the Codwell Inn.
The father of the family, Tom O’Reilly,
smiles as he sets his bags down on the floor.
TOM O’REILLY
Hi, we have reservations
for the weekend.
Jerry Codwell looks at a leather bounded
notebook of reservations, all entries are handwritten.
JERRY CODWELL
O’Reilly?
TOM O’REILLY
Yes.
JERRY CODWELL
We were afraid you wouldn’t
make it with the weather we’ve
been havin’.
Jerry’s sweet, white haired wife, Jane,
smiles at the O’Reilly family.
JANE CODWELL
Hopefully this weather will
clear up for the holiday.
They say it will, but you never
can rely completely on weathermen.
She smiles down at the O’Reilly’s two
kids, a boy and a girl. Jerry hands Tom two keys.
JERRY CODWELL
You’re on the third floor. It’s
at the end of the hall on your
right. Rooms 313 and 314.
TOM O’REILLY
Adjoining rooms?
JERRY CODWELL
Yes, sir.
Tom takes the keys and picks up his bag
from the floor. He leads his family up the stairs.
CUT TO:
INT. CODWELL INN – ROOM 314
The wife, Susan O’Reilly, is tucking her
two children into bed. The room is dimly lit by a single lamp that
casts eerie shadows on the coffin like ceiling.
SUSAN O’REILLY
I want you two to
sleep. No goofing off.
The little boy, Jeremy, smiles deviously.
Susan gives him a playful look of warning.
SUSAN O’REILLY
I mean it.
JEREMY
Okay, Mommy.
SUSAN O’REILLY
(to little girl)
You too, Jessica.
JESSICA
I know.
The woman smiles at her children and kisses
them on their foreheads. She stands and goes to the door.
SUSAN O’REILLY
I’ll leave this open a crack.
If you need anything, we’ll
be in here.
She smiles and turns off the lights. She
shuts the door, making sure to leave it open a crack.
INT. ROOM 313 – CON’T
Susan goes over to the bed where Tom is
watching television. She lies down next to him, finally able to relax
after a long day of traveling.
TOM O’REILLY
The weather is suppose to
clear up by the Fourth.
SUSAN O’REILLY
That’s good. I’m sick of the rain.
TOM O’REILLY
So tomorrow, we’ll go check
out the Aquarium on Charleston
Harbor. I’m sure Jer’ and Jessica
will love to see all the animals.
SUSAN O’REILLY
I’m sure they will.
She smiles up at Tom, just as the door
to the adjoining room slams shut. They both look over at the door.
Susan lets out a sigh and gets up off the bed and head over to the
door.
SUSAN O’REILLY
You know, I tell them not
to goof off, and the first
thing they do is-
She tries to open the door, but it won’t
open.
SUSAN O’REILLY
Tom, the door is locked.
Tom gets off the bed and goes over to
the door. Stomping footsteps can be heard through the door. Tom tries
to open the door. He can turn the knob, but the door is jammed.
From inside, the children start to scream
in fear. The door won’t open no matter how hard they try. Tom and
Susan see the light in the other room start to blink on and off from
underneath the crack at the bottom of the door. Off the children’s
screams for help...
FADE OUT:
FADE IN:
EXT. ALVIN KERSH’S HOME – BACKYARD
4 JULY 2004
Alvin Kersh happily flips star-shaped
hamburgers on his backyard grill. He is wearing a large white chef’s
hat and a cooking apron that says “Kiss The Cook”. Close to him are
a few picnic tables with red, white, and blue paper tablecloths. Next
to him, is Brad, holding a glass of lemonade. They are having a conversation.
Linda, Kersh’s wife, is pouring Kool-Aide.
Mulder comes up next to her. He is wearing a “Fourth of July” party
hat, and a red, white, and blue colored button that says “I Spent
July 4th At Chez Kersh”, The button is pinned onto his white T-shirt.
MULDER
Happy Fourth of July, Linda!
LINDA
Happy Fourth of July to you
too, Mulder. (beat) Would
you like some lemonade?
MULDER
Actually, as good as that sounds,
I’d rather have some of that fine
Kool-Aide, please.
LINDA
All right.
She smiles at Mulder and pours him a glass.
MULDER
Thanks!
Mulder happily hops off in the direction
where Brad and Kersh are. Kersh is still flipping his burgers.
KERSH
(to Brad)
...and you know, maybe one
day, when you buy a house,
you can throw a Fourth of
July Bash.
BRAD
I won’t have buttons.
Brad points to the “Alvin’s 4th Of July
Bash 2004” button that he reluctantly wears on his gray T-shirt.
Mulder steps into the conversation.
MULDER
(goofy)
Hey buddies!
KERSH
Hi Mulder. I see you
found the Kool-Aide.
Kersh smiles.
BRAD
I thought Linda was handing
that out to kids only...
Kersh leans over and quietly whispers:
KERSH
(to Brad)
She is...
Brad nods his head.
BRAD
(to Mulder)
So, Mulder...
MULDER
(happy/excited)
Yep?!
BRAD
...with Krycek gone for the
holiday, how do you spend your time?
MULDER
Well-
Mulder is cut off by his phone ringing.
MULDER
(into phone)
Mulder.
INTER CUT TO:
INT. CODWELL INN LOBBY – CHARLESTON, SOUTH
CAROLINA
Doggett is pacing the lobby, and looking
rather aggravated.
DOGGETT
(mad)
How the hell do you
deal with him?
INTER CUT BACK TO:
EXT. KERSH’S BACKYARD
Mulder quietly and calmly walks away from
Brad and Kersh.
MULDER
What has Alex done?
DOGGETT
He’s hitting on guests at the
hotel we are staying at when
we should be questioning the
hotel management.
MULDER
(thinking)
Hmm... Okay, so he’s already
distracted by women. (beat)
How old do they look?
DOGGETT
Younger than him. College students
maybe. Maybe younger.
MULDER
Okay... so we’ll assume he’s at
the stage of hitting on women
who are underage...
DOGGETT
“The stage”? You mean he’s going
through multiple irritating stages?
MULDER
Yes.
Mulder pulls out a little pocket sized
book from his back pocket. The book is titled: “Caring For Alex Krycek:
Travel Size Pocket Manual”.
Mulder flips through his pocket manual
to a chapter called: “Dealing With Alex & Woman”. Mulder quickly skims
to find a heading called: “On A Case”.
MULDER
Ah-ha! Found it!
DOGGETT
Found what?
MULDER
I have a manual for the
caring of Alex Krycek.
There is silence on the other end. Doggett
can’t even utter a response to that.
MULDER
Okay... for when he’s distracted by
women when he should be working, excuse
him from the woman/women and tell him
Marita would not approve. (beat) I’ll
keep this page bookmarked, just in case.
DOGGETT
Thank you.
Doggett hangs up on Mulder. Mulder folds
the page so he can find it easily. He puts the pocket sized manual
away.
CUT TO:
INT. CODWELL INN – LOBBY
Doggett puts his phone away and glares
in Krycek’s direction. He makes his way over to where Krycek is hitting
on two young females.
KRYCEK
(sly/seductive)
You know, I’m like Nike.
The girls giggle.
GIRL #1
How do you mean?
Krycek gives her a devilish grin.
KRYCEK
(sly/seductive)
Just do me.
The girls giggle again. Krycek grins proudly,
as if he just came up with the best “come on” line in whole wide world.
Doggett comes up behind him.
DOGGETT
Agent Krycek-
KRYCEK
-Not now, Snoop Doggy Doggett.
Krycek “shoos” him away like he would a
fly.
DOGGETT
Ladies, will you excuse us please?
He grabs Krycek by his arm and takes him
away.
KRYCEK
(mad)
Hey! Watch the suit!
Doggett rolls his eyes.
KRYCEK
Lemme go!
Doggett stops walking and looks him in
the face, very menacing-like.
DOGGETT
(furious)
We’re on a case Agent Krycek. Will
you have a little respect for your
job? Remember what A.D. Follmer told
you on our first case? (beat) You wear
that badge, you better respect it or
else he will fire you the first chance
he gets. I don’t doubt that.
KRYCEK
Geez! You’re like “Mr. I Respect
Everything Including Toe Nail Clippers”!
Doggett glares at him.
DOGGETT
Marita wouldn’t approve
of your behaviour.
Doggett hopes Mulder’s tip will work.
Krycek’s eyes go wide.
KRYCEK
(panic)
Oh my god! Don’t tell her! I
promise, I’ll be good! I’ll
behave! Just don’t tell her!
Doggett looks at him in disbelief. The
Marita Card worked. Guess Mulder’s not that stupid after all.
DOGGETT
Good. We need to get checked
in to this hotel so we can
start our investigation.
Krycek nods his head. Doggett makes his
way over to the front desk. Krycek follows.
KRYCEK
I can’t believe I finally
get to investigate claims
of haunting apparitions.
Doggett rolls his eyes at this mumbo-jumbo.
There’s no such thing as ghosts.
CUT TO:
EXT. KERSH’S BACKYARD
Kersh brings a plate of star-shaped “4th
of July” hamburgers and hotdogs to the picnic tables. Everyone sits
patiently.
KERSH
(enthusiastic)
Here’s what we’ve all been
waiting for, the Fourth of
July Kersh Burgers.
SKINNER
And in the shape of stars, no less.
Skinner looks at Kersh with amusement.
Kersh sets the plate on the table.
KERSH
I like to be patriotic.
Kersh smiles proudly.
MULDER
I’ll say! Let’s dig in!
Mulder impatiently reaches across the
table to grab a hamburger. Diana slaps his hand lightly and gives
him a disapproving look.
DIANA
It’s rude to reach
across the table, Fox.
MULDER
(embarrassed)
I’m sorry. I just got excited.
He smiles at her.
MULDER (CON’T)
I’ve never been to one of
Kersh’s barbecues before.
It’s so exciting.
Linda places a hamburger on Mulder’s plate.
MULDER
Thank you, Linda.
LINDA
You’re welcome, Mulder.
Mulder happily takes a gigantic bite out
of his hamburger.
MULDER
(overly expressive)
Mmm good! (beat) Hey Boss of all
Bosses, Head Hancho of The X-Files,
Brado... I’ve got a question for ya.
Mulder looks over at Brad.
BRAD
“Brad” is just fine.
He smiles politely at Mulder.
MULDER
Sorry. (beat) Brad?
BRAD
Yeah?
MULDER
Why are Alex and Doggett on a
case during the Fourth of July?
It’s Independence Day. They
should be here.
BRAD
Crime doesn’t stop for the
holidays. Neither does the paranormal.
Mulder looks sad.
MULDER
Oh.
BRAD
When I was A.D. in New York,
I had to work on Christmas too.
MULDER
That’s not very jolly at all.
Did Santa visit you at your office?
BRAD
No. (beat) You get used to working
on holidays. It’s the price you pay
when you have a position in law
enforcement. (beat) Life is full
of sacrifices.
MULDER
Hmm... If I haven’t made any
sacrifices, does that make
me a bad agent?
BRAD
No, far from it. It just means
your division doesn’t require you
to make many sacrifices.
Mulder looks pensive.
MULDER
Oh. (beat) Gee, you’re really smart.
I sure am glad you’re my boss.
Mulder smiles at Brad.
MULDER
So, do you really think
I’m a good agent?
BRAD
Yes.
Skinner and Kersh look at Brad as if he’s
lost a few marbles.
SKINNER
(mouth full of food)
Hey Brad, I’ve got a question
for you too.
Skinner swallows his food. Brad looks over
in his direction.
SKINNER
You used to head Criminal
Investigations, right?
BRAD
(no shit)
Yeah.
SKINNER
Okay, so what do you do when
the files on your desk start
to pile up really high?
BRAD
Well, I wouldn’t know because
when I was in charge, that
never happened. I’ll give you
a tip though.
SKINNER
Shoot.
BRAD
If you work everyday, paperwork
won’t pile up on your desk.
SKINNER
Oh.
Just as Brad is about to take his first
bite out of his hamburger:
MULDER
Hey Brad, I’ve got another
question for you-
LINDA
(saving Brad)
-How about we stop all this
talk about work and enjoy the holiday.
MULDER
Oh, okay!
Brad smiles at Linda, appreciating her
jumping in and stopping all the work related questions.
CUT TO:
INT. HOLIDAY INN – DAY
Doggett and Krycek are at the hotel room
of the O’Reilly family, who have now relocated to a popular and un-haunted
Holiday Inn in Charleston. Krycek sits in front of Tom and Susan O’Reilly.
Doggett stands behind him, observing them.
KRYCEK
What exactly happened in
the room that night?
TOM O’REILLY
My wife had just put Jeremy
and Jessica down for the night.
And after she came back in, the
door slammed on it’s own. I couldn’t
open it. It was locked or something.
SUSAN O’REILLY
We heard our children scream.
The lights started to blink
on and off. We could see it
from under the crack in the door.
TOM O’REILLY
After a few minutes, everything
settled down and the door unlocked.
SUSAN O’REILLY
And when we went inside to see if
they were all right, the room seemed
untouched and just how I last saw it.
TOM O’REILLY
I don’t know what happened in there.
We left the hotel immediately. I
don’t think that was a very nice thing
for that old couple to do to a couple
of young children. If you ask me, they
should be shut down and put out of business.
Doggett steps forward.
DOGGETT
May we speak with Jeremy and
Jessica? (beat) We just want
to know what they saw and why
they screamed. (beat) If you
would like, you can be with
them when we question.
TOM O’REILLY
I don’t want my children to be
bothered by the government.
Doggett and Krycek share a look.
TOM O’REILLY
Just get the Codwell Inn out of business.
Tom glares at them in anger. Doggett and
Krycek share a look and stand up.
DOGGETT
Thank you for your time.
Krycek pulls out a business card and hands
it to Tom.
KRYCEK
If there is anything else
you think of that can help
in our investigation, please
let us know.
He smiles politely and heads out of the
room, followed by Doggett.
INT. HALLWAY – CON’T
Doggett and Krycek walk down the hallway.
KRYCEK
I say we head back to the Codwell
Inn and question some employees of
the hotel. Maybe they know something
about the room. (beat) And if they
know nothing, then we’ll have to stake
out the room tonight. You know, to see
if we can catch any phantoms.
DOGGETT
I’m a little curious about why Tom
O’Reilly doesn’t want us to question
his children. (beat) I mean, I understand
not wanting them to be questioned by federal
agents. That could probably scare them if
they don’t really know what’s going on. I
don’t know, his reaction seemed a little
suspicious to me.
KRYCEK
Maybe he’s a disbeliever in ghosts. Like you.
Krycek smirks at Doggett.
CUT TO:
INT. CODWELL INN – KITCHEN
Doggett and Krycek walk through the kitchen,
passing many plates of food, trays of cakes and pies, bowls of ice
cream and other tasty treats. Doggett walks ahead of Krycek. Krycek
eyes the food and sees a yummy looking stake meal just waiting for
him to eat... and better yet, it’s unattended. Krycek stops walking
and watches Doggett continue on for a small beat. He then takes the
plate of food and starts to walk and eat it as he catches up to Doggett.
Doggett turns when he notices Krycek isn’t
behind him. He glares when he sees the plate of food in Krycek’s hand.
DOGGETT
What are you doing?
KRYCEK
I’m a growing boy. I need to eat.
DOGGETT
We’re on a case about to question
the cook and all you can think
about is your stomach?
Krycek nods his head and takes a big forkfull
of mashed potatoes and scarfs it down.
DOGGETT
Stop it.
Krycek shakes his head “no”.
KRYCEK
Make me.
Doggett takes the plate away from him.
KRYCEK
Hey! I’m hungry.
DOGGETT
You can eat after we question the cook.
KRYCEK
Well then hurry up already.
Geez! What is the hold up anyway?
Krycek rolls his eyes, as if this is all
Doggett’s fault.
DOGGETT
You. You’re the hold up.
Will you behave and be
professional?
KRYCEK
I am professional.
DOGGETT
Then act like you are.
Doggett puts the plate down on a table
and walks on. Krycek looks down at the food and quickly steals a slice
of stake and scarfs it down as he follows Doggett.
Doggett approaches the cook.
DOGGETT
Excuse me, Mr. Kent?
Mr. Kent, the cook, turns to face Doggett.
Krycek comes up behind him, having a hard time chewing his huge slice
of stake. Krycek’s cheeks are puffed out as he continues trying to
chew.
MR. KENT
Yeah?
DOGGETT
I’m Special Agent John
Doggett with the FBI.
Doggett pulls out his FBI credentials
to show Mr. Kent.
DOGGETT
This is my partner Agent Krycek.
He signals behind him to Krycek, who is
still chewing. Krycek waves at Mr. Kent.
DOGGETT
We’d like to ask you a few questions.
MR. KENT
You must be here about the
recent ghost haunting.
KRYCEK
Yep.
MR. KENT
What do you want to know?
DOGGETT
Have you ever seen anything
suspicious happening up on
the third floor? Particularly
room 314?
MR. KENT
Well, I’m just the cook. I usually
don’t go up to the rooms.
Doggett nods his head. Krycek starts to
look around again and spots a slice of cherry pie. He looks at Doggett
and carefully makes his way over to the pie slice and starts to eat
it.
MR. KENT
I’ve heard about claims of
paranormal activity and ghost
hauntings. Personally, I think
it is a load of bull shit.
DOGGETT
So I take it you aren’t a believer
in the paranormal?
MR. KENT
That is correct, sir.
KRYCEK
(mouth full of pie)
Mr. Kent, do you have any
relation to Clark Kent?
Doggett turns to face him. He couldn’t
have just heard that question come out of his mouth.
MR. KENT
Who?
KRYCEK
You know. Superman.
Mr. Kent doesn’t know what to say to that.
Doggett glares at Krycek and turns his attention back to Mr. Kent.
DOGGETT
What can you tell us about
Mr. and Mrs. Codwell?
MR. KENT
They pay well. (beat)
I don’t know them personally.
DOGGETT
Ok, thank you for your time.
KRYCEK
And for the pie.
Doggett glares at him again and walks
by him, grabbing him by the arm.
DOGGETT
What the hell are you doing?
KRYCEK
I’m hungry.
DOGGETT
You’re going to pay for that.
KRYCEK
No way. I’m FBI. I can “roast beef” him.
DOGGETT
You are not going to use your
credentials to get free food.
KRYCEK
Why not? I do it all the time.
(beat) Can we eat now? I’m starving.
DOGGETT
No, we need to question
a few more employees.
KRYCEK
Please, please, please, please,
please, please, please, pleeeeeaaase!
Doggett glares at him and immediately
picks up his cell phone and dials Mulder’s number.
DOGGETT
(after a beat/irritated)
He’s begging for food. What do I do?
Doggett glares at Krycek, who is continuing
to irritate Doggett with his “please” begging. Doggett listens as
Mulder instructs him on how to deal with Krycek and food. Doggett’s
expression changes to disbelief.
DOGGETT
You’re kidding.
He hangs up his phone and glares at Krycek.
KRYCEK
Please, please, please-
DOGGETT
Shut up. We’re going to eat.
KRYCEK
Whoopie!
Krycek runs out of the hotel and heads
to the car.
CUT TO:
INT. TROPICAL PUNCH ICE CREAM SHOPPE
Krycek and Doggett are sitting in a booth
in a pastel colored ice cream shoppe. Krycek has many plates in front
of him. Doggett has a small plate of food. Doggett watches Krycek.
How can he eat so much? A waitress comes to their table.
WAITRESS
Do you think you have room
for desert?
Krycek looks up at her and grins.
KRYCEK
Depends what the desert is.
He winks at her and licks his lips. Doggett
coughs, trying to get Krycek to understand that he shouldn’t be hitting
on her.
WAITRESS
Well, we have our desert menu right there.
The waitress points in the direction of
the desert menu at the end of the table. Krycek picks it up and opens
it. He slyly looks up at her and takes notice of her nametag.
KRYCEK
Hmm... I don’t see “Wendy” on here.
He looks up at her and smiles slyly. Wendy
politely smiles. Doggett rubs his head: there is no escaping this
evil torture.
TIME CUT TO:
INT. CODWELL INN – ROOM 314 – LATE EVENING
Doggett is sitting at the small circular
table writing in his notepad. He looks up when he hears a knock on
his door. Doggett gets up from his chair and opens the door. No one
is there.
Until... suddenly, Krycek jumps out from
the side and right in front of Doggett.
KRYCEK
BOO!
Doggett looks at him, not amused.
DOGGETT
What?
KRYCEK
Anything unusual happen
in there yet?
DOGGETT
No. It’s only a room. There’s
no such thing as ghosts.
KRYCEK
You know, they say this
entire floor is haunted.
Doggett rolls his eyes.
DOGGETT
Sure it is.
KRYCEK
I’m serious. (beat) In fact...
right now... I’m feeling a
little... phantasmagoric.
Doggett cocks his eyebrow.
DOGGETT
Do you even know what
that means?
KRYCEK
What? Phantasmagoric? Yeah.
What do I look like? A bafoon?
Doggett gives him a look... does he really
want an honest answer?
KRYCEK
Anyway... let me into Spook Central.
Doggett steps aside and Krycek enters.
DOGGETT
If you’re so curious, why didn’t
you want to stay in this room?
KRYCEK
What? You’re kidding, right?
(beat) The only way I’ll be
stayin’ in a haunted room is
if a hot ghost woman gives my
willy some fun lovin’ pleasure.
Like in “Ghostbusters”.
Doggett winces. What did he do to deserve
working a case with Krycek?
DOGGETT
(after a beat)
Anyway... we’re staking out this
room tonight so we can prove that
no paranormal activity happens.
Krycek looks at him with a frightened
look.
DOGGETT
(disbelief)
What? You’re scared?
Krycek’s expression quickly switches to
“macho man”.
KRYCEK
No! I’m not scared! I’ve never been
scared in my life. It’s not like
ghosts can possess people and stuff
like that. It’s not like I’m afraid
of the unknown or anything.
Doggett gives him a doubtful look, not
buying his “macho” attitude. Krycek looks at him for a beat, seeing
that Doggett isn’t buying this at all.
KRYCEK
(quiet)
Yeah... I’m scared. (quick; threatening)
But if you tell anyone, you’re a dead
man! You understand me? Huh? Punk!
DOGGETT
I won’t tell anyone if you
behave and assist on this case.
KRYCEK
Okay, I promise.
Doggett’s cell phone rings and he picks
up.
DOGGETT
(into phone)
John Doggett.
BRAD
(filtered)
John, it’s Brad. How’s the case?
DOGGETT
So far, everyone who works here
claims this room is haunted. I
just think it’s a trap for tourists.
(beat) We’re staking out the room tonight.
BRAD
(filtered)
That’s good. (beat) Krycek didn’t bring
any alcohol like you were fearing, did he?
DOGGETT
Not that I know of.
Before leaving for South Carolina, John
had told Brad about the problem he has been having with alcohol. John
had expressed concern about working a case during a national holiday
because Krycek might bring alcohol to celebrate. John’s main concern
is being tempted to drink if given the opportunity, which wouldn’t
be a good thing because he wants to break out of the bad habit as
soon as possible. Telling Brad about his problem has helped him now
that he doesn’t have to deal with it alone.
BRAD
That’s good. Krycek’s behaving, right?
Doggett sighs.
DOGGETT
There was a small incident earlier
when we got here, but thanks to
Mulder, it’s fixed.
BRAD
Well, that’s good. (beat) I’ve got to
go. Mulder’s here and I’m making him
help me get the giant teddy bear out
of my apartment.
Doggett laughs.
DOGGETT
Good luck with that.
BRAD
Yeah, I know. (beat) Talk to you later.
DOGETT
Yeah. Bye.
Doggett hangs up the phone and turns to
face Krycek, who is setting up video cameras to catch ghostly activity.
CUT TO:
INT. BRAD FOLLMER’S APARTMENT – LATE EVENING
Brad enters his living room from the kitchen
to find Mulder sitting on his couch looking at a framed photo of Brad
and Monica. The giant teddy bear is still in the middle of the living
room from when we first saw it in 7x02 “RT-7915-3”.
BRAD
Okay Mulder, how do we get
this thing out of here?
MULDER
You know, I haven’t seen Monica
in the office lately. (beat)
Has she been sick?
Brad sighs. How is it that Mulder has
no idea that Monica and Scully are “dead”? He has a right to know.
No matter how painful the news will be for him.
BRAD
Mulder, Monica and Dana are dea-
MULDER
-Are you sure you want to
get rid of the teddy bear?
BRAD
Yes. I have no where to put it.
Don’t you agree that orphaned
children would like it?
MULDER
Yeah.
Mulder sighs and sets the photo down and
stands up.
MULDER
Let’s go to work!
BRAD
Thank you. (beat) How do
we get it out of here?
MULDER
We’ll squeeze it through the door,
which will require a lot of pushing.
Then, we’ll roll it down the hallway,
and down the stairwell. Push it through
the door and out onto the sidewalk, where
we’ll then roll it into my convertible
and tie it down. Then, I’ll drive to the
orphanage and give it to the children.
Brad looks doubtfully at Mulder. The bear
is too big to push through anything, nonetheless, get it down the
stairwell. How the hell is this going to work?
CUT TO:
INT. CODWELL INN – ROOM 314
Doggett is sitting in the chair reading
a book. Krycek is laying on the bed, staring up at the ceiling. He
looks rather bored.
KRYCEK
This ceiling reminds me of a
coffin. (beat) Kind of spooky, isn’t it?
Doggett looks up from his book.
DOGGETT
(he didn’t hear him)
What?
KRYCEK
Why don’t you believe in ghosts?
DOGGETT
Because they don’t exist.
KRYCEK
How do you know?
DOGGETT
Have you seen one tonight?
KRYCEK
No, but maybe that’s because your
mind isn’t open to extreme possibilities.
DOGGETT
So then you’re saying that the only
way to see ghosts is if you believe
in them? (beat) Any so called proof
of life after death is mumbo jumbo.
KRYCEK
That’s not true. People have
captured encounters on video.
DOGGETT
Yeah, film that can easily
be manipulated with the
correct video editing software.
KRYCEK
I’m not talking about the movies.
(beat) The Discovery Channel had this special-
DOGGETT
-You believe everything
you see on television?
Krycek sits up.
KRYCEK
(defensive)
Only selected channels.
Doggett rolls his eyes.
DOGGETT
I believe what my own two eyes see.
(beat) When I was a kid, Monica claimed
to have seen an old “ghostly” woman
in the corn field. She took us out
there one night to show us. She claimed
to see something and everyone else
only saw that Monica was nuts. (beat)
People that claim to be psychic, or
claim to have ghost encounters, or
alien abductions are only looking to
have their name in the tabloids. It’s
all a load of hocus pocus, mumbo jumbo.
Krycek smiles.
KRYCEK
Don’t ever say that to Mulder.
You’ll have him crying over the
“Sam was abducted” story for hours.
DOGGETT
Thanks for the tip.
Suddenly the lights in the room turn off.
DOGGETT
What did you do?
KRYCEK
Why do you always blame me?
(beat) John... the lights in
the hallway are on.
DOGGETT
Maybe they’re doing something
with the electricity in our room.
KRYCEK
“They” meaning the ghosts?
DOGGETT
Will you knock if off. There’s
no such thing as ghosts.
Suddenly, the lights begin to turn on
and off continuously.
KRYCEK
Explain this, skeptic boy!
Doggett stands up from his chair and goes
over to the door to open it. But it won’t open!
DOGGETT
(mad)
Great. Did you jam the door?
KRYCEK
(scared)
I didn’t jam nothin’!
CUT TO:
INT. BRAD FOLLMER’S APARTMENT
Mulder and Brad are trying to push the
giant teddy bear out the door. They’ve gotten the head through, and
are now attempting to get the rest of the body through.
BRAD
How the hell did you
do this the first time?
MULDER
I don’t know. I have “Mulder Luck”.
Brad stops and backs away from Mulder
and the giant teddy bear.
BRAD
So if I don’t help, you’ll
be able to do it on your own?
MULDER
What?! No! Help me!
CUT BACK TO:
INT. CODWELL INN – ROOM 314
Doggett is frantically trying to open
the door. Krycek is standing next to him. He’s scared shitless as
he watches an unseen entity destroy the hotel room.
KRYCEK
(freaked)
Quick! Get me out of here!
Krycek grabs onto Doggett and hugs him
in fear.
DOGGETT
(annoyed)
Get off me!
Krycek squeezes his eyes shut in fear.
Doggett turns around and sees the room being destroyed. Paper is flying,
lamps knocked over, bed unmade, curtains blowing, etc. His eyes widen:
he can’t believe this!
CUT BACK TO:
INT. BRAD FOLLMER’S APARTMENT
Brad stands back and watches Mulder trying
to push the giant teddy bear out of his apartment.
MULDER
(pleading)
I can’t do this on my own!
Suddenly, Mulder and the bear fly into
the hallway.
MULDER
WHOA!
Mulder and the bear go tumbling down the
hallway and towards the stairwell doors. Brad steps out into the hallway,
just in time to see the stairwell doors open by a resident and Mulder
and the bear go tumbling down the stairs. Brad’s eyes widen as he
chases after him down the stairwell.
CUT BACK TO:
INT. CODWELL INN – ROOM 314
Doggett is still wide-eyed about what
he’s witnessing, and Krycek continues to cling onto him in fear.
Suddenly, a figure of a young girl appears
before them. She reaches out as if needing someone’s help.
Krycek opens his eyes for a moment, sees
the ghostly figure, then squeaks in fear and shuts his eyes tightly.
KRYCEK
Tell me when it’s over!
CUT BACK TO:
EXT. APARTMENT BUILDING
Mulder and the bear have somehow tumbled
their way out of the apartment building and have conveniently stopped
in front of Mulder’s red convertible.
Brad comes running out of the building.
He stops in his tracks when he sees Mulder sitting on the ground unharmed.
Brad blinks his eyes, not believing what he’s seeing.
BRAD
Mulder Luck?
Mulder smiles and nods his head as he
gets up off the ground, dusting the dirt off of himself.
CUT BACK TO:
INT. CODWELL INN – ROOM 314
The ghostly figure vanishes from sight,
and suddenly, the room hasn’t changed at all! The bed is made, papers
nicely stacked how Doggett had left them, the lights are on and the
door opens.
Krycek opens his eyes.
KRYCEK
What the hell happened?
Doggett’s eyes are wide. How the hell
is he going to explain what he saw in a case report. He can’t believe
this.
Off their shocked expressions...
TIME CUT TO:
INT. BRAD FOLLMER’S OFFICE – JULY 7TH
Doggett and Krycek sit in front of Brad’s
desk as he reviews over their case reports. Brad looks up at Krycek.
BRAD
Agent Krycek, does your
computer have spell check?
KRYCEK
Yes, sir.
BRAD
Use it. You’ve spelled “the”
wrong several times.
KRYCEK
(mad)
What?! I did not! (beat)
How did I spell it.
BRAD
T-E-H.
KRYCEK
It’s a typo.
BRAD
A typo that has happened more
than three times on the first
page. (beat) Proof read before
you hand anything in to me.
Krycek rolls his eyes as Brad shuts the
file. Brad sighs, not sure what to think of their final findings.
BRAD
So, this occurrence remains
unsolved and unexplained?
DOGGETT
Yes, sir. That is correct.
KRYCEK
Welcome to the x-files. (beat) As
far as we know, the Codwell Inn
will continue to be haunted by
the young apparition.
DOGGETT
We’ve spoken to the management,
and they’ve agreed not to put
any guests up on the third floor.
KRYCEK
And the O’Reilly’s are dropping
any charges they had against the hotel.
Brad nods his head.
BRAD
So, Agent Doggett, you have always
said that seeing is believing...
Are you a believer now?
Off of Doggett’s “I know what I saw, but
my mind is unable to believe” look, we...
FADE OUT:
THE END.
