Summary: Krycek
accidentally infects himself with the alien virus.
FADE IN:
INT. MULDER/KRYCEK’S APARTMENT
SEPTEMBER 11, 2004 (SATURDAY)
10:43 A.M.
Krycek is sitting on the floor in the
living room. He is rummaging through a small cardboard box. Polaroid
pictures of an alien autopsy, an alien stiletto, and a syringe of
the actual alien virus are surrounding him.
Krycek holds the syringe in his hand and
stands up. He didn’t remember that he has a sample of the alien virus.
He can’t believe that he has it when he shares an apartment with Mulder.
It’s a miracle that Mulder hasn’t stumbled upon this box and accidentally
infected himself with it.
Suddenly a parrot flies into the apartment
through the open window in the living room. Frightened, Krycek drops
the syringe and the needle lands on his foot. He screams and reaches
down to pull it out of his foot. The parrot swoops close to his head
and Krycek accidentally injects the alien virus into his body.
Krycek’s screams fall silent as he realizes
that he’s infected now and that currently there is no vaccination
to fight the virus to save his life.
The parrot perches itself on the arm of
the couch and bobs its head.
PARROT
(squaks)
Peanut!
KRYCEK
Shut up! This is serious,
not a circus show.
PARROT
Peanut!
KRYCEK
A peanut is not going to
save any life you idiot!
PARROT
Peanut!
Krycek rolls his eyes at the parrot and
limps over to the phone and dials a very long string of numbers.
KRYCEK
Yes. I need to speak with him.
(beat) This is a matter of international
security! (beat) Yes, I’ll hold.
The parrot hops over to Krycek and perches
itself on his shoulder.
CIGARETTE-SMOKING MAN
(muffled, on phone)
Who is this?
PARROT
Peanut!
CIGARETTE-SMOKING MAN
I don’t have time for prank phone calls.
KRYCEK
Don’t hang up, sir! It’s me, Alex!
CIGARETTE-SMOKING MAN
Why’d you shout “peanut” at me?
KRYCEK
I didn’t. It was the damn bird!
CIGARETTE-SMOKING MAN
This call better be important. I was
in the middle of doing something.
KRYCEK
Sir, do you recall the time a few years
back when the sample of the alien
virus went missing in Russia?
CIGARETTE-SMOKING MAN
Yes. I always figured you stole it.
Are you going to return it to my scientists now?
KRYCEK
I can’t.
CIGARETTE-SMOKING MAN
You can’t?
PARROT
Peanut!
KRYCEK
I dropped the syringe on my foot and
accidentally infected myself. I’m going
to die an alien who hasn’t slept with
Marita in years…
Krycek sniffles and begins to cry.
CIGARETTE-SMOKING MAN
Don’t cry, Alex. You need to cool down
your body temperature so the alien
can’t gestate inside you. I’ll send Doctors
Scully and Montgomery to help you.
KRYCEK
Thank you, sir.
Krycek hangs up the phone and grabs a tissue
and blows his nose. What is he going to do if an alien gestates inside
of his body? He couldn’t run to Marita for goodbye sex because the
alien may infect her. Life is over as he knows it. He mopes toward
the kitchen, his head hanging low.
PARROT
Peanut!
KRYCEK
A peanut is not going to
save me, little guy. (beat) What to do…
Krycek walks into the kitchen and makes
himself a glass of water to keep his body temperature down. He eyes
the freezer and cocks an eyebrow. He sets his glass of water down
on the counter and begins unbuttoning his shirt.
TIME CUT: 11:13 A.M.
The apartment door opens and Mulder enters
his and Krycek’s apartment. He is carrying grocery bags from Happy
Gilligan’s. He kicks the door shut and heads to the kitchen. He doesn’t
notice that all his and Krycek’s frozen foods are sitting on the card
table in the middle of the room. Mulder sets the bags down on the
counter and unpacks the goods. He pulls out chocolate chip ice cream
and smiles.
MULDER
Alex! I picked up four gallons
of chocolate chip ice cream!
PARROT
(off screen)
Peanut!
MULDER
You told me not to get
ice cream with peanuts.
Mulder opens the door to the freezer and
sees Krycek standing in it, shivering and completely naked. All the
freezer shelves have been taken out. Mulder is confused, and holds
out a gallon of chocolate chip ice cream out in front of Krycek.
MULDER
Here. Hold this. All the
shelves seem to be missing in here.
Mulder places the ice cream in Krycek’s
hands and shuts the freezer door. Ho hum, he didn’t realize where
his buddy is standing.
MULDER
I thought about getting strawberry
sauce for Diana and I for tonight,
but didn’t when I figured you’d
eat it all before we got to using it.
Mulder pauses.
MULDER
Wait a minute… Alex…?
The parrot flies into the room, landing
in front of him.
MULDER
(blushes)
Alex, you shouldn’t have. I can’t
believe you’re so afraid of losing
my companionship that you’d buy
us a pet parrot. (beat) What’s his name?
PARROT
Peanut!
MULDER
Peanut? That’s a cute name.
(beat, suspicious) By any chance
are you half monkey? Alex and
I had a pet monkey for a day once
and that didn’t turn out very good.
PARROT
Peanut!
MULDER
I named the monkey JoJo. He was
the ape from H.E. double hockey sticks.
I bet you’ll be much better than that
evil devil monkey.
Mulder grabs another gallon of ice cream
and goes back to the freezer. He opens the door again. Alex’s teeth
are shattering and he is still holding onto the other gallon of ice
cream. Mulder hands him the second gallon and shuts the door on him
again. He turns to head back to the counter, he freezes in place.
MULDER
Wait a minute… Alex…
What are you doing butt
naked in the freezer? Don’t
you know your winky is going
to be the size of a-
PARROT
Peanut!
Mulder covers his mouth and giggles. It
seems to be him and the bird have their minds on the same track.
Mulder walks back toward the freezer,
just as there is a loud knock on the front door of the apartment.
MULDER
Hold on Alex! There’s
someone at the door!
Mulder runs to the front door and answers
it. It’s John Montgomery. He is dressed in a red striped suit and
is wearing a red top hat and his eyes are wide open – caffeine-induced-like.
This gets Mulder prematurely excited about what this man is here for
– did he win the lottery?!
MONTGOMERY
(overly excited)
Fox William Mulder?
MULDER
Yes, I’m him.
MONTGOMERY
Congratulations, Mr. Mulder.
This is your lucky day!
Montgomery shakes his hand enthusiastically.
MULDER
Oh goodie! Oh boy! It is?!
MONTGOMERY
Yes, it is. You’ve just won yourself
a shopping spree at Super Target
with your lovely wife, Diana!
Diana Fowley comes into the apartment,
dressed up nicely in a navy blue evening gown. Mulder hops in place.
MULDER
Yay!
Diana wraps her arm around his and leads
him out of the apartment. Mulder is too excited to notice that Scully
is making her way down the hallway and toward his apartment. She carries
a bag of supplies. She walks up to Montgomery who has now taken off
his silly red top hat and red striped jacket. He is once again the
serious man we all have come to know and love.
MONTGOMERY
I’m surprised that worked.
SCULLY
I told you he is easily manipulated
Is Alex still here?
PARROT
Peanut!
They look around the room, shutting the
apartment door behind them.
SCULLY
Krycek?
MONTGOMERY
We’re with the Group. Come out
so we can take care of your problem.
There is no answer.
SCULLY
Hopefully he didn’t drown
in a cold bath.
She walks to the bathroom only to find
an empty bathtub.
MONTGOMERY
(off screen)
I found him. He’s inside the freezer.
Scully comes to the kitchen, a smirk on
her face. A part of her is glad that he is in some sort of pain. Especially
after all that he’s done to screw up her life this year.
SCULLY
Do we want to administer
the weak vaccine?
MONTGOMERY
No, not when I can save this man’s life.
If I can get to a hospital, I can work to
make the successful vaccination against
the virus he infected himself with.
SCULLY
Ok, the closest hospital is Saint Vince’s.
You’ll need to make sure that he
doesn’t find out.
PARROT
Peanut!
Scully opens a cabinet and pulls out a
table cloth. She wraps it around Alex.
SCULLY
Let’s go.
MONTGOMERY
Dana, I can take care of this alone.
Why don’t you take some time for
yourself today, just make sure to be
back at Saint Vince’s by eight this
evening.
SCULLY
Why? Is there something else going
on that I’m not supposed to find out about?
MONTGOMERY
No. You need a break. Deal with your
freedom carefully and do not try to get
away. I’m sure he has made you aware
of consequences that could come of that.
Scully nods her head. They shut the door
and leave. Montgomery takes out his wallet and gives her some cash.
MONTGOMERY
That should be enough for the day.
KRYCEK
C-can I-I w-win a shopping spree?
Krycek is delirious from the freezing cold.
Once outside Montgomery and Krycek get
into the care that Scully and Montgomery arrived in. They drive away,
leaving Scully to decide what she can do in the following eight hours.
She desperately wants to go to Doggett’s home and let him know that
she is all right, but she fears if she does that it will trigger his
memories and that would put his life in danger. Of course there is
the chance that Doggett isn’t even alive anymore and going to his
home would have no consequences. She doesn’t want to risk it though,
it is best that she get out of areas where she could run into anyone
she knows that believes she is dead. She throws her arm into the air
to hail a cab.
CUT TO:
INT. DULLES INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT – 11:20
A.M.
Brad is awaiting the arrival of his friend
Martin Fitzgerald from the New York field office. The door opens and
people get off the plane. Brad waves his hand when he sees Martin.
He approaches his friend, curious as to why a cute blond woman is
accompanying him.
BRAD
Martin, who’s your friend?
MARTIN
Brad, this is special agent Samantha
Spade. She’s been helping me look into
the Strughold Electronics case.
BRAD
I thought agent Taylor was helping
as well. Any reason why he isn’t here?
SAMANTHA
Game. (beat) It’s nice to meet you,
Martin’s told me a lot about you.
Samantha extends her hand to shake his.
BRAD
Likewise. (beat) Do you two
have bags to pick up?
Martin holds up his empty hands.
MARTIN
We both checked our suitcases through.
BRAD
Suitcases for the weekend?
You two plan on doing more than
getting me up to date on the work you’ve done?
SAMANTHA
Do you know any good places to eat
lunch and discuss your case?
BRAD
Of course, I’ve been down here
for a few years.
MARTIN
Are you going to show me the office
they stick you A.D.s in at Headquarters?
BRAD
I guess I can, but let me warn you.
There are a few strange agents here in D.C.
SAMANTHA
I’ve heard things about the Deputy Director-
MARTIN
- Barbeques and buttons?
SAMANTHA
Yeah.
BRAD
Those aren’t just rumors.
Alvin is really gung ho about
brotherhood among the directors
of the FBI.
SAMANTHA
Sounds like OPR needs to look
into what he should and should
not be doing while on the clock.
BRAD
You’d think so, but unfortunately
Headquarters is in dire need of an
administrative face lift.
MARTIN
Have you ever considered putting
in for OPR?
BRAD
It’s crossed my mind many times
during our director meetings.
Brad smiles at his friend. They continue
on to baggage claim before heading out for lunch.
TIME CUT:
INT. J. EDGAR HOOVER BUILDING – BRAD’S
OFFICE – 12:07 P.M.
Martin and Sam are standing, admiring
the view outside of Brad’s office window.
MARTIN
I’m surprised that they haven’t
give you an assistant. You must
work overtime without one in homicide.
BRAD
I’m not head of homicide anymore.
Alvin thought it would be funny to
put me in charge of the X-Files Division.
SAMANTHA
X-Files?
BRAD
It’s probably a division that
shouldn’t even exist.
Martin takes a seat on Brad’s leather couch.
MARTIN
What do they investigate?
BRAD
Cases the Bureau deems unsolvable.
SAMANTHA
Cold cases?
BRAD
Something like that. I think it
has more to do with cases that point
to the paranormal as their only explaination.
MARTIN
Why call it the X-Files? Why not
the P-Files, for paranormal?
BRAD
Trust me, you don’t want the division
called the “P-Files”, one of the agents
down there would have a lot of pee jokes
coming out of his mouth if that happened.
There’s a knock on the office door. It
opens and Alvin Kersh pokes his head into the office. He is wearing
a black polo shirt and jeans.
KERSH
Knock, knock. I heard you
brought some friends up here.
Kersh sees Samantha and grins from ear-to-ear.
KERSH
You’re prettier than what Jeffrey said.
Kersh shakes Samantha’s hand.
SAMANTHA
Thank you.
Brad looks at Martin to see his reaction
to Kersh’s flirtation attempt. He can’t decipher Martin’s expression.
KERSH
(excited)
I made buttons for you in
honor of your visit to Headquarters.
Samantha and Martin are confused.
MARTIN
Buttons?
KERSH
Yeah “I visited the X-Files
A.D. Office” buttons.
Kersh pulls two buttons out of his pocket
and hands them to Samantha and Martin.
KERSH
I also hear that your boss,
Jack Malone is a big fan of
agent Mulder’s work so I made
him up a fake FBI badge with
Mulder’s image on it.
SAMANTHA
Sure.
KERSH
(smiling)
This way you’ll remember your
visit always and you’ll be able
to brown nose Jack. (beat) Well,
I better get going.
BRAD
Linda doesn’t know you’re here, sir?
KERSH
Nope and last weekend we had a
huge argument over how sick she
is getting of my button hobby.
BRAD
(sarcastic)
Imagine that.
KERSH
I know. Can you believe women
sometimes. (to Samantha) No offence.
SAMANTHA
None taken.
KERSH
Well, I’ll duck out now. Bye.
It was nice meeting you two.
Kersh waves goodbye and leaves the office.
BRAD
And now you’ve both met
our current Deputy Director.
(beat) Martin, isn’t your father
looking to take over that position?
MARTIN
He hopes to someday soon.
BRAD
I hope he gets it, I’m sure he’d
straighten this place out in no time.
(beat) Why don’t we head out and eat now?
Martin and Samantha nod their heads and
they all leave the office.
CUT TO:
INT. DOGGETT’S HOUSE – LIVING ROOM – 12:20
P.M.
Today is NASCAR day! Doggett has invited
his Marine buddy, Knowle Rohrer, over to watch the race with him.
The two men are seated comfortably on Doggett’s couch. A couple of
aluminum beer cans are on the coffee table and the television is on,
blaring loudly.
KNOWLE
I don’t know why NASCAR
doesn’t have cheerleaders. You
can pick up pretty much any popular
auto magazine and see women in
bikinis, posing next to a car. Why
not get them out near the race track to
cheer on the Viagra car?
Doggett gives his friend a look and leans
toward the coffee table where their drinks are. He takes hold of his
glass of ice water and drinks from it.
DOGGETT
You really haven’t grown up
yet, have you?
KNOWLE
I don’t know what you’re talking about.
DOGGETT
You and the way you treat women.
KNOWLE
I treat women very well. All
women deserve a night with The Roar.
DOGGETT
(rolls eyes)
You’re still using that nickname?
KNOWLE
Yeah, women love it.
DOGGETT
Have you ever thought about
treating women with respect?
KNOWLE
I do.
DOGGETT
(sarcastic)
Right, I’m sure Shannon would
agree with that. (bet) Speaking of
Shannon, is she coming over or not?
I haven’t seen her in years.
Outside the house, they hear Buddy barking.
There’s a knock on the front door.
KNOWLE
Must be my woman.
Knowle stands up and answers the door.
Shannon McMahon walks in, holding Buddy in her arms.
SHANNON
(to Buddy)
Such a cute little puppy.
Yes you are.
She looks up at Knowle and smiles.
SHANNON
Hope I didn’t miss much, traffic
was awful on the way over.
Knowle and Shannon walk into the living
room. Doggett stands to greet her.
DOGGETT
Shan’…
He hugs her. Their body language is hesitant
and uncomfortable, reflecting the last time they were in the same
room together: the morning John received a call from his now ex-wife,
Barbara, informing him that Luke had gone missing. At that precise
moment in time, he and Shannon were in the middle of having sex together,
on his desk in his office at the New York City Police Department.
For a time, Doggett placed blame on Shannon
for the disappearance of his son, and since then Shannon has blamed
herself. If they had never gotten involved in an affair, John wouldn’t
have come in early to work to have sex with her and he would have
driven his son to school. Unfortunately that wasn’t the way things
happened. Shannon and Doggett can’t even talk about it because Knowle
is clueless about the affair between them and would not handle it
well if he found out.
Doggett and Shannon part from their hug.
SHANNON
It’s been a long time, Johnny.
There is sadness and regret in her voice.
DOGGETT
A little over eleven years, huh?
Knowle is oblivious to the hesitation and
tension between them.
KNOWLE
You two ought to hook up for
a night, you know, relive your
younger years. To me it seems
John is a bit uptight perhaps a sexy
round with Shan’ would cure that.
Knowle sits back down on the couch.
SHANNON
That’s quite all right, Knowle.
DOGGETT
I’d rather share love-making
with someone who means a lot
to me. I’m not how I used to be anymore.
The three of them watch the television
for a beat and then simultaneously, Doggett and Knowle groan. Their
favorite driver isn’t leading the race anymore.
SHANNON
Let me guess, you two are
rooting for the Viagra car.
KNOWLE
How’d you guess?
SHANNON
It’s sex related.
KNOWLE
Hey baby, not everything
I do is sex related.
SHANNON
I’m very thankful of that.
Buddy hops up onto Shannon’s lap and lies
down. Shannon pets the top of his head.
SHANNON
What’s your dog’s name?
DOGGETT
Buddy.
SHANNON
He’s cute. Knowle, I think
we should get a baby rottie.
KNOWLE
Really? Why?
SHANNON
Well, we’ve been living together
for years now, I think it’d be a nice
next step to share responsibility in
caring for a puppy.
KNOWLE
Aw… I don’t know. I think
we’ve got enough responsibility
already. Our jobs, the bills, cleaning,
cooking, keeping enough condoms
in the apartment.
Doggett coughs.
DOGGETT
Shannon, you want to help me
get some snacks in the kitchen?
SHANNON
I’d love to.
Shannon stands up, still holding Buddy
in her arms. She follows John into the kitchen.
SHANNON
I like your decorating style.
Very earthy, very opposite of
what Barbara had you living in.
DOGGETT
Knowle’s treating you right, isn’t he?
Shannon wrinkles her brow, wondering where
this is coming from.
DOGGETT
I mean, you’re still ok with his
player attitude, right?
Shannon says nothing for a beat.
SHANNON
Knowle is Knowle. He has
a difficult time admitting love.
DOGGETT
He finally told you he loves you?
SHANNON
Of course not, but I don’t need
to hear those words to know
he loves me. He shows me he loves me-
DOGGETT
- By sleeping around with other
women? Shan’, I don’t think I need
to tell you this, but if you’re looking
for lifetime commitment, you aren’t
going to find it in Knowle Rohrer.
SHANNON
Love conquers all, isn’t that right?
I love him despite the jerk he can
be because I understand that jerk is
really just a part of him that comes out
when he’s afraid of the emotions and
affection inside of himself.
DOGGETT
Sorry, just sometimes I think you
could do better. I’m not saying that
Knowle is bad, he’s a great guy, probably
my best male friend, but… he’s not what
you’ve said you wanted.
SHANNON
When I said that, I was in love with
you, Johnny. I was in love with a married
man. I was in love with the idea of married
life. You proved to me that just because
two people are married it doesn’t necessarily
mean they are in love with each other.
Doggett is quiet. Back during their affair
when he was married to Barbara, he told all his hopes and fears about
his marriage to Shannon. She was the first one he admitted to that
he no longer was in love with his wife and that the only reason they
remained in their marriage at the time was for their son, Luke.
DOGGETT
(hesitant)
So what are we really in
here trying to discuss?
SHANNON
I don’t know.
DOGGETT
Don’t go and say that, we both
know. You can’t hide the fact
that there’s tension between us-
SHANNON
- Ok, John. Gee, it’s been eleven
years since we last spoke and since
you blamed me for your son’s death
because we were fucking around.
We. Not just me. It takes two people
to fuck around, yet somehow I’m the
bad guy. I mean what the hell?! It’s not
my fault, it’s not your fault, it’s not
Luke’s fault, and it’s not Barbara’s
fault. It’s the fault of the son-of-a-bitch
that took him. Yes, I’m sorry that it
happened to you-
DOGGETT
- I’m not going to discuss this, Shannon.
I wanted to make up with you, get
that tension out of the way. Not discuss
who’s fault it is that Luke died.
SHANNON
Well, I’m sorry, but for over a decade
now this has been eating me up inside.
Knowle doesn’t know about what went
on between us, I couldn’t talk to him.
Barbara doesn’t know, I couldn’t talk to her.
DOGGETT
Shan’, I’ll help you clarify this.
I do not blame you for what
happened to my son.
Shannon is quiet, she looks down at Buddy
in her arms and quizzically tilts her head to the side. Something
has caught her eye.
SHANNON
(quiet)
What the…?
Shannon walks over to John’s kitchen counter
and places Buddy on it. She looks closely at the dog’s ear.
DOGGETT
What?
SHANNON
I think your dog’s ear is bugged.
She looks up at him in disbelief.
DOGGETT
Pardon?
SHANNON
Look, there’s something in his ear.
Do you have a flashlight?
DOGGETT
(confused)
Yeah…
He opens a drawer in the kitchen and pulls
out a small black flashlight. He hands it to Shannon. She shines it
into Buddy’s ear.
SHANNON
I’ve heard rumors that the government
was using domesticated animals to
spy, but I never thought the rumors
were true… Do you have tweezers?
I think I may be able to get this out.
Doggett exits the kitchen as Knowle joins
them. Knowle starts opening and closing cupboard doors, looking for
something.
KNOWLE
Does John have Nacho Cheese Doritos?
SHANNON
Do you know anything about
the government using dogs as spies?
KNOWLE
Yeah, it’s in experimental development
right now. Far as I know only a few
hundred animals are being used. Why?
SHANNON
I think John’s dog is one of them.
KNOWLE
Why would the government
need to spy on Johnny?
Shannon gives him a look so he can remember
that they’ve been helping Brad and John with the disappearances of
Monica Reyes and Dana Scully.
Doggett returns and hands Shannon tweezers.
She carefully holds Buddy’s head down.
SHANNON
Just hold really still little buddy.
She carefully removes a bugging device
from the dog’s ear. All three of them look at it, not really believing
that this unsuspected dog is a spy.
KNOWLE
(whisper)
I have access to a database that
could tell us how long the device
has been inside Bud’s ear.
DOGGETT
Would this have anything to do with
me remembering that Dana and Monica
are alive and that I was given false memories?
KNOWLE
I don’t know, but we can find out.
Knowle exits the kitchen and grabs his
jacket from the back of a chair in the living room. He, Doggett and
Shannon head out the door to look into this further.
CUT TO:
INT. RESTAURANT – 1:23 P.M.
This is a friendly, bright, happy restaurant.
The kind of place you’d go to with a friend you haven’t seen in some
time.
Brad, Martin and Samantha are sitting
in the middle of the restaurant at a small round table. They’re in
the middle of their meals.
BRAD
So this Strughold Electronics is
European based?
MARTIN
Not only that, but there’s Strughold
Genetics, Strughold Research Center,
Strughold Fertility Research, crop dusters.
This company doesn’t seem limited to any
single specialty.
BRAD
That doesn’t make any sense.
SAMANTHA
It doesn’t, but maybe it does.
Brad gives her a look.
SAMANTHA
Martin siad that you expressed
concern about this being a government
conspiracy. If something is going on
behind the backs of the American public
why not do your dirty work behind the
innocence of a corporate name? Strughold.
BRAD
Did you find out what could be going on?
MARTIN
I came across a name of a woman who
had visited the Strughold Fertility Research
Center, Ally McLeod. I did some digging and
found a phone number so I decided to give
her a call. I told her that I had a wife who is
infertile and asked if she had a recommendation
for which doctor we should see.
SAMANTHA
Here’s where it gets interesting. She informed
him that women go there not because they
are infertile, but because they are donating
all their ova to scientific research.
BRAD
Why would someone need to research ova?
MARTIN
I asked her if she ever regretted
her decision to help and she said
that she did. She and her husband
were able to adopt. I had Sam look
into that adoption and there’s no legal
documentation that states Ally and Adrian
McLeod ever adopted a child.
SAMANTHA
However, they did have a child in
their residence from the summer of
1993 up until February of this year.
MARTIN
Jill Lynn Montgomery McLeod.
Martin says this as if this is their big
hook. The key to what they have been looking into.
SAMANTHA
Her biological mother is Dana
Katherine Scully. Father, Jonathan
Timothy Montgomery.
BRAD
Ok, so how can this connection
lead us to Dana?
MARTIN
Well if Dana has any connection
to Strughold’s many factions then
maybe we can find her.
SAMANTHA
Of course this could also be
one huge coincidence and lead
us to another dead end.
They are quiet for a beat.
BRAD
I honestly do not know what to
make of all this. Dana never
mentioned having a daughter.
MARTIN
Look, Brad, we’re not going to
give up on this case. No matter
how long it takes. One day something
is going to show and lead us to Monica.
Don’t give up.
Brad nods his head, he knows that Martin
is right.
BRAD
If you’ll excuse me for a moment
I need to go clear my head.
He stands up and heads towards the mens
room. Martin and Samantha watch him for a moment.
Inside the restroom, Brad turns on the
cold water faucet and splashes his face with cool water. He looks
at himself in the mirror as the water beads slowly trickle down his
face. There has to be something within all the information Martin
and Samantha have uncovered. Something that will lead him to Monica
and his unborn child. His gut tells him that the reason Scully’s daughter
wound up “adopted” is a key, a step in the right direction. However,
the only person who can tell them why that happened is Scully and
she’s missing as well.
In two months Monica would be giving birth
to their child and he wants to be there with Monica for the event.
But by the way things keep coming to dead ends, he feels he may never
see Monica or his child again. He’s already missed out on much of
her pregnancy, he hopes she is being taken care of.
Brad grabs paper towel from a dispenser
and dries his face and hands then he exits the restroom, running right
into a woman.
BRAD
Sorry.
SCULLY
That’s quite all right.
Scully smiles at him and it quickly fades
when she sees the man who ran into her is Brad Follmer. Brad looks
at her in disbelief.
BRAD
Dana…?
SCULLY
Umm…
Scully walks away from him quickly, heading
toward the exit of the restaurant. Once inside, she runs down the
sidewalk, Brad running close behind her as fast as he can. He catches
up to her and grabs hold of her arm, stopping her in her tracks. The
grip he holds on her arm is painful. Scully tries to pull away, she
is terrified.
SCULLY
(pleading)
Let me go. I-I can’t be
seen with you.
Brad sees that he is scaring her. He sees
that she isn’t as strong as he last saw her both physically and emotionally.
He lets go of her arm. Something has happened to her that has broken
her down. Scully wipes a tear from her eye.
BRAD
(desperate)
Please, don’t run from me, Dana.
BRAD
Why can’t I be seen with you?
Scully nervously looks around them and
starts walking away.
BRAD
Dana?
He walks next to her and she turns a corner
and walks into an ally.
SCULLY
(quiet)
You were told I was dead, right?
Brad nods his head and leans down toward
her to better hear what she is saying.
SCULLY
Truth is I’m being held against
my will at a facility…
BRAD
Where?
SCULLY
I shouldn’t talk to you, Brad.
Just doing so could endanger
my life, Monica’s life and possibly your life.
BRAD
(forceful)
You know where Monica is?
Scully looks away from his eyes and nods
her head.
BRAD
Is she all right? Last thing
she told me was that Alex
Krycek was trying to kill her.
SCULLY
I can assure you she’s doing
ok. I’m doing my best to help
her, but I’m very limited.
BRAD
Why can’t she come home?
SCULLY
Don’t ask too many questions.
The less you know, the better.
Scully turns her back on him and walks
off.
BRAD
(calls out to her)
Are we going to have a girl or boy?
Scully bites her lower lip and a tear falls
down her face. She turns around to face him, but can’t bring herself
to look Brad in the eyes.
BRAD
What? Did something happen?
SCULLY
I don’t know how to tell you this…
I had to give her an abortion. For
her own safety.
Tears sting Brad’s eyes, he remains calm.
He trusts that Scully has a rational explanation for having to do
this.
SCULLY
The man who made me return to
this Project submitted Monica
as a test subject after we tried over
and over to erase her memories.
That procedure wouldn’t work on
Monica and knowing what she knows
now, we couldn’t let her return. It’s a
matter of natural and international
security. If this man found out she was
pregnant, he would have known for sure
that I am not testing on her.
BRAD
Tests for what?
SCULLY
To create a vaccine against a virus
that could quite possibly take out all
of the human population of the planet.
Test subjects exposed to the virus at this
time will die. I gave her an abortion to
save her life. Every night I lie awake
thinking of ways I could get Monica back
to D.C. She needs you, she refuses to
talk to me because of what I’ve done. I can’t
tell her why I do the things I’ve done because
that would put my life, possibly John’s life in danger.
BRAD
Your life’s been threatened?
Scully starts crying. Brad doesn’t doubt
for a second anything that she’s told him. He wraps his arms around
her and hugs her.
SCULLY
(sobbing)
I’m so sorry, Brad… I saw
no other option…
BRAD
(whisper)
Mon’ can still conceive children, right?
Scully nods her head and tightens her grip
on Brad.
BRAD
You did the right thing. You
saved her life for a reason and
I believe that reason is that you
and Mon’ are going to get out of
this situation. I’ve got people
helping John and I look into some
place called Strughold-
Scully shakes her head ‘no’.
SCULLY
I can’t see either of us ever getting
out safely, even if we escaped we’d
have to live life on the run, and I know
that isn’t what any of us wants.
BRAD
John misses you so much, Dana.
He’s pretending he’s not hurt, but
I know him better than that.
Scully pulls out of Brad’s embrace.
SCULLY
Help him get over me, Brad.
I want him to be happy. He
deserves happiness in his life.
(beat) If he ever asks you if you
think I ever loved him, let him
know that I do.
Scully turns her back to Brad and slowly
walks away.
BRAD
Dana, don’t go back. You know
if you come with me that the FBI
can offer you protection.
Scully stops and faces him again.
SCULLY
(hopelessly laughs)
Brad, the men that hole me
have men in the FBI.
BRAD
At least tell me where this
facility is-
SCULLY
- If I did, would you come find it?
BRAD
You know I would. So would John.
SCULLY
Then I can’t tell you. The security
guards have orders to kill anyone
on the spot who isn’t supposed to be
there. I don’t want you to lose your
lives for us. You have so much to
look forward to in life.
She turns and walks away, again. She fears
that she has told Brad too much already. Brad watches her, tears escape
from his eyes.
BRAD
(choking up)
Dana?! (beat) Was it a girl or boy?
Scully wipes a tear from her eye and turns
around one last time to look at Brad.
SCULLY
Girl.
Brad’s heart breaks as he watches Scully
turn a corner and walk out of his sight. He doesn’t feel as if this
chance meeting is a loss. In fact, he feels more hopeful than before
that they will return home. Until then, he’s not sure if he should
tell John about this. John isn’t the type to sit back and let things
go. No one needs John Doggett overreacting and finding his way to
this facility – wherever it may be.
CUT TO:
INT. DEPARTMENT OF DEFENSE – 2:00 P.M.
Doggett and Shannon are standing behind
Knowle who is sitting in front of a computer. They’ve just received
access approval.
Knowle pulls up a search dialog box and
types in “John Doggett”. In moments a large file of information is
brought up detailing Doggett’s family information: mother – Liza,
father – Henry, siblings – Henry Jr., Jason. Divorced from Barbara
Kendell, children – Luke (deceased, 1993). Education, work, military
background (bootcamp, Operation Desert Storm, awarded Purple Heart).
His previous FBI assignments: New York City – Criminal Investigations
Division (child abduction, homicide, sex crimes), Washington D.C.
– Criminal Investigations Division (homicide, X-Files).
Knowle scrolls down the page – SAT scores,
names of close friends and their families, previous resident addresses,
pets, ex-girlfriends, etc., etc.
DOGGETT
(bends down)
Does it say anywhere how
long they’ve been monitoring me?
KNOWLE
I haven’t seen anything yet.
Knowle continues scrolling – video surveillance
files of him at dinner with Barbara from July of this year. Knowle
looks up at Doggett and Shanon, they are not looking at the screen
at the moment.
SHANNON
Why would the government want
to keep such a close eye on you?
Did something happen to you
after Desert Storm?
DOGGETT
No, same as you two I was stationed
in Dhahran, spent a year or so in
Saudi after the war ended, and then
returned home. Now unless the
government is spying on Gulf War
Vets because of Gulf War Syndrome
I can’t think of any other reason why
they’d be keeping tabs on me.
SHANNON
In which case if this is about
Gulf War Syndrome, they’d be
watching Knowle and I as well.
Knowle stops scrolling.
KNOWLE
Says here that your dog was
first bugged in March 2001, and
that you intercepted him on
March 28 of that year on I-70
heading toward Colorado.
DOGGETT
How the hell would they
know I was heading to
Colorado with friends?
KNOWLE
Unless they didn’t initially
intend for you to take the dog
home. Maybe they wanted to
spy on someone else.
Doggett pulls a chair up and sits down,
he rests his head in his hands.
DOGGETT
This is too goddamned frustrating.
None of this makes any sense.
SHANNON
Is there a way to find out
if Buddy was intended for
someone else?
KNOWLE
I can look.
Knowle starts scanning the documentation
again.
KNOWLE
Ok, says here that canines chosen
for Operation Spy Dogs are highly
intelligent and have been genetically
altered for ideal performance.
SHANNON
John, does Buddy exhibit intelligence
higher than other dogs you’ve encountered?
(she reads the computer screen)
Such as an understanding of spoken language?
DOGGETT
He seems to understand
when I speak to him.
KNOWLE
Did either one of you think to
bring a disc so we can try to
burn all this information to look
at in a more secure location?
No answer.
SHANNON
Is there any information about
who Buddy was supposed to be with?
Silent beat as Knowle continues to read.
His entire body stiffens at what he’s reading.
KNOWLE
Marita Covarrubias… but Plan B
was put into effect. The bug is
manufactured by Strughold electronics.
Off screen they hear the sound of men quickly
walking down the hallway toward the room they are in. Shannon and
Knowle share a look. Suddenly, five men enter the room, four armed
with machine guns.
LEAD MAN
You aren’t supposed to be in here.
KNOWLE
I’m Knowle Rohrer. I’m employed
by the DOD. I was just showing
some friends what I do here.
LEAD MAN
I don’t see visitor passes. Did
you take this through official channels?
KNOWLE
No, I didn’t. I figured we aren’t going
to be in here very long, why bore them
with obtaining visitor passes. (laughs) That
process alone takes longer than me showing
them where I work. Plus they’ve been
with me the entire time.
The Lead Man tries to look behind Knowle
to see what is displayed on the computer monitor.
LEAD MAN
What are you doing logged
onto the network?
KNOWLE
Showing them the intranet and
checking company email, sir.
Knowle turns around and closes out of the
window browser, therefore logging himself off of the network.
KNOWLE
I’ll be getting them out of here
now. I’m sorry if this caused
a security alert, I’ll go through
official channels in the future.
Knowle, Shannon and Doggett attempt to
leave the room. The four gunmen aim their weapons at them.
LEAD MAN
I’ll need to see at least three
forms of identification from
each of you. Drivers license,
social security card and another
form of ID of your choice. (to security)
Take them to holding and separate them.
The gunmen go over to Shannon, Knowle and
Doggett and take them by the arms. They lead them out of the room.
KNOWLE
(to Lead Man, cocky)
You’re going to feel very
foolish when this is all over.
LEAD MAN
(sarcastic)
Right.
TIME CUT:
EXT. DEPARTMENT OF DEFENSE – 7:00 P.M.
Knowle, Shannon and Doggett walk out of
the building followed by the Lead Man.
LEAD MAN
(to Knowle)
Sir, I’m very sorry for any inconv-
KNOWLE
(mad)
- You should be.
Knowle gives the Lead Man a rather nasty
glare.
KNOWLE
(mad)
You’re lucky I’m not higher
in rank, or else I’d have your ass-
SHANNON
(stern)
-Knowle.
KNOWLE
(ignoring Shannon)
- fired. (beat) I expect to be
treated with respect, not put
through this B.S. charade.
LEAD MAN
Yes, sir. I am very sorry.
KNOWLE
I can assure you that your
Supervisor will be hearing about this.
Knowle turns and walks away. Shannon and
John follow and catch up with him. To their surprise, Knowle is chuckling
to himself.
SHANNON
Knowle, was it really necess-
KNOWLE
(amused)
- Did you see how scared
shitless that prick was?
Shannon rolls her eyes.
SHANNON
You don’t know when to stop, do you?
Knowle stops walking and faces her.
KNOWLE
What are you talking about?
SHANNON
What am I talking about?
She lets out an annoyed sigh.
SHANNON
I’m talking about that inappropriate
silent treatment you were pulling
off. (beat) We were already suspicious,
why go and pull something so stupid?
Knowle shrugs.
KNOWLE
I don’t-
SHANNON
(mad)
- Knowle Justin Rohrer.
Knowle stops talking as Shannon’s intense
eyes pierce him.
SHANNON
I shouldn’t have to be called
upon to get you to speak-
KNOWLE
- I –
SHANNON
- especially when “no more
boom boom for you” gets you
to cooperate.
She glares at him. He says nothing in return.
Doggett approaches them.
DOGGETT
No more boom boom? (beat)
Knowle, you really need to get
your priorities straight.
They arrive at Knowle’s black Hummer, they
get in and head back onto the highway to return to Doggett’s home
in Falls Church, Virginia. For a few minutes they are silent, each
thinking about what they found out at the DOD about Buddy.
DOGGETT
I can’t believe my dog is spying on me.
KNOWLE
Strughold Electronics. I used to
make deliveries to their facility.
Knowle hesitates to tell John that he saw
and talked to both Monica and Scully at this facility, but he feels
it is something he needs to know.
KNOWLE
I made my last delivery this past
May. I was ordered not to return to
this building after I ran into Monica and
your friend Dana.
Doggett stares his friend down, he does
not appreciate that Knowle has known this information this long and
hasn’t told him. Whatever happened to “Semper Fi”? Always faithful
– they are Marine brothers, he expects Knowle to be honest with him
at all times.
DOGGETT
Where is this building located?
KNOWLE
New York state.
DOGGETT
Take me there.
Knowle is silent. He can’t take him there,
he was warned not to return by penalty of death.
KNOWLE
Brad’s got some friends up in
New York helping him look into
this whole Monica thing. Maybe
we should go talk with him and
figure out the best course of action.
Doggett takes a deep breath, his face flushes
red with frustration. He hates that he has no control over this situation.
Knowle continues down the highway, heading toward Brad’s apartment.
CUT TO:
EXT. AMUSEMENT PARK – 7:05 P.M.
Mulder and Diana walk hand-in-hand through
a crowd of people. It’s a rather chilly September night and Diana
is wearing Mulder’s coat over her nice evening gown.
MULDER
I had a really nice time with
you this evening, Diana.
He leans over to kiss her on the top of
her head.
DIANA
I know, I did too.
MULDER
I have to admit though I never
saw it coming, winning that
Super Target shopping spree with my wife.
DIANA
It was something I thought
you’d enjoy.
MULDER
Do you want to ride the
roller coaster again?
DIANA
Not really. I’m enjoying
myself walking with you, Fox.
MULDER
A few years back, Alex and I came
to a carnival and investigated a
ghost haunting. (beat) We saw it.
Diana laughs.
MULDER
I’m not kidding, if I remember
correctly, both Alex and I fainted
and Scully and Doggett had to
take care of us. That was when
Scully lived with us for awhile.
She couldn’t cook worth a damn, but
she sure did try. She was like a
mother to us, it was nice being
taken care of. She’ll make such a
wonderful mother someday when
she has children of her own. (beat) Diana?
DIANA
Yeah?
MULDER
Did you ever want to have children?
DIANA
As nice as that would be, Fox.
I don’t feel I’m ready for that at
this point in life. I’m doing well
in my career, I’m hoping to get
advanced to a supervisory position
one day. I wouldn’t have the time
necessary to raise a child.
MULDER
(sad)
Oh… I have this dream of having
a son named Francis Dwayne.
DIANA
I know you do, but we’ve
got time in the future.
She stops and kisses him on the lips and
then rests her forehead on his.
DIANA
(quiet)
I love you, Fox.
MULDER
I love you too.
He gently rubs his nose against hers and
they part, arms around each other. They walk out of view and we see
Scully sitting alone on a bench underneath a tree. She sits with her
legs crossed and her hands in her lap, she stares ahead of her, unaware
of all that is going on around her.
Scully doesn’t want to meet up with Montgomery
at Saint Vince’s Hospital in a little under an hour. She doesn’t want
to return to the facility to endure more of the Cigarette-Smoking
Man talking to her about how much he loves her and how soon they will
be able to conceive a child together. She doesn’t want to go back
and feel the icy glares of Monica in the lab. She wishes she could
tell Monica how what she’s done is actually for the best in the long
run, but she can’t.
Monica is the only reason why she can’t
say here, to run to Doggett and find love and comfort in his arms.
If she were to leave the Project, another scientist would be sent
in to test on Monica, and they would discover that she hasn’t done
any testing on her at all. If she were to stay in D.C., Monica would
most definitely die.
Scully hears the far away screams of people
riding on a roller coaster. This snaps her out of her thoughts and
brings a smile on her face. This reminds her of her first date with
John Doggett. He had pretended he didn’t have a fear of heights and
therefore a fear of roller coasters. She had taken him on one of the
most exhilarating coasters that the carnival had to offer. The result,
he got sick to his stomach and his body had a hard time moving correctly.
That date was one of the first times she
had really, honestly felt happy. When she was with Skinner she never
felt that rejuvenated and alive. With Montgomery she was as happy
as she could be given the circumstances in which they lived. She had
loved him very much and despite thoughts she’s had to want to rekindle
their relationship now (because he would help her feel better after
all the Cigarette-Smoking Man has done to her), but her heart can’t
and doesn’t want her to let go of John Doggett so easily.
She stands up and walks, she better call
a cab to take her back to Saint Vince’s before it gets too late.
CUT TO:
EXT. SAINT VINCE’S HOSPITAL – 7:53 P.M.
John Montgomery stands outside in front
of the hospital, waiting for Scully to return. He knows that she probably
thought of not returning with him, but he knows how much she cares
for her friend, Monica. He hopes that by allowing her time for herself
today that coping with the selfish demands of the Cigarette-Smoking
Man may be easier. He doubts it.
Scully has a haunted past. He can’t even
try to believe he understands what it must feel like to have to consent
to that man’s selfish sexual needs. It hurts him to have to watch
Scully pretend she is fine when he knows better. She is a strong individual,
but there’s only so much emotional trauma that one can deal with and
he knows she’s bordering on complete control of her emotions and emotional
breakdown.
Montgomery hates himself for following
through with orders to perform an operation on her so the Cigarette-Smoking
Man could eventually impregnate her. What the Cigarette-Smoking Man
doesn’t know is that he did something to make it nearly impossible
for her to conceive. Instead of a zero percent chance for conception,
she is not at 13% and with an 80% chance of having a miscarriage if
conception should happen. These percentages make it difficult for
ol’ Smokey to have a family with her, but not impossible. He chose
not to tell Scully this information for her own protection.
There’s a tap on his shoulder, he looks
down at Dana Scully. She gives him a friendly smile.
SCULLY
Hey. What’re you thinking about?
MONTGOMERY
A lot of things. (beat) Mainly you.
Did you enjoy yourself today?
SCULLY
Yes. I did. Thank you.
So you’ve been thinking about
me? What about?
MONTGOMERY
How you’re holding up back
at the facility.
SCULLY
I’m fine.
Scully walks off toward Montgomery’s car.
She gets in on the passenger side. Montgomery let’s out a sigh, he
knows exactly what “I’m fine” means. He gets into the care and fastens
his seatbelt and puts the car into drive and starts driving north,
back to the facility. Through the corner of his eyes, he sees her
wipe tears away from her face. She lets out a nervous cough and points
at an exit sign.
SCULLY
Can you get off here for
a moment, please.
Montgomery gets off at the exit and pulls
up into a parking lot at a run down motel. He puts his car into park.
MONTGOMERY
Do you need to talk?
Scully says nothing and reaches out and
touches the side of his face.
SCULLY
John… I want you to make love to me…
MONTGOMERY
Dana, I –
SCULLY
- Don’t argue with me. You know
you’re the only one that understands
me right now.
She leans forward and kisses him. He refrains
from responding. She pulls away from him, a fake smile on her face.
SCULLY
What’s the matter?
MONTGOMERY
Dana, you and I both know that
making love with someone you
don’t love isn’t going to help you
in the long run.
SCULLY
But you still love me, right?
MONTGOMERY
I do, and that is why I will not
do this for you. I love you too much
to do something that I know you
don’t really want to do.
Scully doesn’t know what to say. She bites
her lower lip to keep herself from crying.
MONTGOMERY
I hate that you’re being denied
your freedom just as much as you
do, but believe me, everyday I hope
to find a way to liberate you and
Ms. Reyes.
A tear streams down her face.
SCULLY
I just need to feel love again…
I feel so numb inside, John.
This way of life is killing me. Not
in the literal sense of the work, but
inside my heart.
Montgomery puts his arm around her shoulder.
He speaks to her softly.
MONTGOMERY
You’re not numb inside, Dana.
That’s what these tears mean.
They’re an expression of the love
and hurt you hold inside yourself.
SCULLY
I’m so afraid…
She buries her face into his chest to cry.
She appreciates the comfort he is offering her right now. She needs
a shoulder to cry on, not more meaningless sex. She’s relieved that
he refused her, this tells her that he does want to help her and Monica.
TIME CUT TO:
INT. FACILITY – CIGARETTE-SMOKING MAN’S
ROOM – 10:48 P.M.
The Cigarette-Smoking Man lies on his
bed, in the dark, watching a documentary about the American Civil
War while waiting for Scully to return.
Restless, he gets out of bed and throws
on a bathrobe and grabs a pack of Morleys and a lighter. He opens
the glass door to his balcony and steps outside.
He lights his cigarette and breathes deep
the nicotine. He exhales through his nose. He looks out over this
property and watches Dana Scully and John Montgomery return from their
emergency trip to Washington D.C. to save Alex Krycek from the alien
virus. He knows when he sent them that Montgomery would let her have
the day off, just as he knows that they are trying to prevent him
from having the vaccine against the alien virus by pretending to not
know how to successfully create it. He knows many things. He knows
that when colonization begins that the virus used to create the vaccine
could be mutated enough to be stronger, therefore making the vaccine
useless.
There was another way to save himself
and he took it. When colonization begins, all he has to do is sit
back and watch as he had insured his survival.
When he and Scully create a family for
themselves, he will demand that the aliens save her and their child
as well.
They will help bring order among those
left unfortunate enough to be immune to the virus after the invasion
ends. His family will essentially have the power to rule the planet
in cooperation with the alien race – which has already begun to silently
colonize, posing as humans in both populated and smaller cities.
The Cigarette-Smoking Man gives a smug
grin as he hears the door to his room open and close, signaling Scully’s
entry. If she is a smart woman, she will soon be at his side to please
him. If not, Monica and her other friends would suffer the consequences.
He takes a long, satisfying drag off his
cigarette and exhales as he feels Scully’s arms wrap around his waist.
She kisses the back of his shoulder.
CIGARETTE-SMOKING MAN
Did you and Montgomery fix the Krycek problem?
SCULLY
Of course we did. Apparently the
virus he had was so old that within
several hours the experimental weak
vaccine killed off all trace of it.
She kisses his back again. The Cigarette-Smoking
Man smiles. He loves playing the role of the manipulative bastard.
CIGARETTE-SMOKING MAN
Why don’t we go inside, Dana. This
balcony isn’t exactly made for intimacy.
SCULLY
Doctor Montgomery said that we
can’t try to conceive until November.
CIGARETTE-SMOKING MAN
That’s not how we’re doing it tonight,
Dana. I’m sure you know of many ways
to make an old man like myself happy.
That pretty mouth of yours must be good
at something other than talking.
He enters his room and puts his cigarette
out in an ashtray and he sits down in a chair, smiling at Scully.
He leans back and opens his robe to her.
Off of Scully’s troubled expression as
she kneels down in front of him.
FADE OUT:
THE END.
