FADE IN:

INT. DARK PARKING GARAGE – NIGHT

The concrete walls of the parking garage are wet with warm condensation. Marita Covarrubias stands alone with tears in her eyes, starring back at someone. Dry blood is on the side of her head, having come from her ear.

MARITA COVARRUBIAS (V.O.)
Belief... a word that holds so much
faith that even in turmoil I can’t
let it go. To survive is to believe,
not only in myself, but in those
who are with me.

In front of her is Alex Krycek. He holds a steady aim on her with his gun. Like Marita, he too has blood on the side of his head, only his blood is fresh, coming from his ear.

MARITA COVARRUBIAS (V.O.)
To believe when the odds point against
me is to stand up to sacrifice. In this
kill or be killed world there is only one
thing, one feeling, that can make me safe.
(beat) I believe in him. I believe in all
of them, but above all, I have blind trust
and faith, and that keeps me strong...

Krycek blinks his eyes, his finger ready on the trigger.

MARITA COVARRUBIAS (V.O.)
But can my strength save him?

CUT TO BLACK:

FADE IN:

EXT. UNDERGROUND BUNKER – DAY

DECEMBER 25, 2006

Alien soldiers are leading Mulder, Krycek and Marita onto one of their trucks. Their hands have been tied together with rope and their black cloth hoods remain on their heads. The aliens speak to each other in their native language. The aliens force Mulder, Krycek and Marita to sit down.

ALEX KRYCEK
Where are you taking us?

Why speak when he knows he’ll get no answer from them.

ALEX KRYCEK
(after a beat)
I don’t think you know who we are.
(beat) I’m sure your leader will want
to speak with us.

LEAD ALIEN SOLDIER
You’re involvement with The
Syndicate does not affect us.

The Lead Alien Soldier leaves them in the back of the truck and gives orders to another alien.

MARITA COVARRUBIAS
(whispers)
He said to take us to their headquarters.

FOX MULDER
You know what they’re saying?

MARITA COVARRUBIAS
Shh.

One of the Alien Soldiers gets into the back of the truck to sit and guard them on their journey back to the alien Headquarters set up in Washington, D.C.

The Lead Alien Soldier orders something to the other alien soldier in the back. The Alien Soldier nods his head and places a hand on Mulder’s head, making him pass out. He repeats this action with Krycek and Marita.

FADE TO BLACK:

FOX MULDER (OVER BLACK)
We have to stick together.

Marita’s eyes slowly open. For a moment all she can see is white light.

FOX MULDER (CON’T)
It’s the only way to get out
of this. We can’t let them divide us.

ALEX KRYCEK
Where do you think we are?

FOX MULDER
Hard to tell. Why I figure, most
buildings in D.C. were leveled.
Perhaps we’re underground.

Marita sits up as her eyes focus. She looks over at Mulder and Krycek who are sitting across the room from her. There is a mirror on the wall opposite of them – she can only assume they are being held in an old interrogation room at some government building.

MARITA COVARRUBIAS
Maybe we’re in the Pentagon.

Mulder and Krycek look over at her. Krycek smiles.

ALEX KRYCEK
Look who’s awake. You ok?

MARITA COVARRUBIAS
I think so.

Krycek gets up and goes over to her. He checks her head over.

MARITA COVARRUBIAS
How long have I been out?

ALEX KRYCEK
Hard to say actually. We woke up on
the ground like you did just now.

FOX MULDER
It can’t be more than a day.
No one’s come to give us good.

MARITA COVARRUBIAS
I think it’s safe to say that they’re
holding us in the Pentagon.

ALEX KRYCEK
Why’s that?

MARITA COVARRUBIAS
It has many levels beneath
the ground. Remember when we
got out of the bomb shelter?

FOX MULDER
The land was empty.

MARITA COVARRUBIAS
Exactly. On our way here I heard
them say to take us to their headquarters.
(beat) The Pentagon would be an ideal
place for them to set up a base. It
has information we’d need, defense...

ALEX KRYCEK
So this place will be a bitch to
escape from, huh?

Marita nods her head.

FOX MULDER
I want to know why they
didn’t just kill us.

Krycek and Marita look over at him.

ALEX KRYCEK
(joking)
Maybe they want to negotiate a truce
with you since you were the president
of Super Buddies.

Mulder gives him a doubtful look.

ALEX KRYCEK
(after a beat)
I’m curious why they didn’t separate us.

MARITA COVARRUBIAS
(very matter of fact)
They’re observing us.

Mulder and Krycek look at her, waiting for an explanation.

MARITA COVARRUBIAS (CON’T)
The two-way observation mirror. If we
were held in a holding room there would
be no two-way mirror.

ALEX KRYCEK
If they’re watching us, what
do they hope to find?

MARITA COVARRUBIAS
You and I were part of The Syndicate.
Mulder’s father was as well, plus his
never ending search for the truth about
Samantha’s abduction. (beat) They probably
want to know where The Syndicate Elders are.

FOX MULDER
Why not just read our minds?

ALEX KRYCEK
He’s right. They must know
where the Group went...

Marita looks down. If that’s true, then her father is dead.

FOX MULDER
Then why would they want us?

Krycek shrugs.

MARITA COVARRUBIAS
To study us. What better way to understand
and know your enemy? (beat) Its why our
scientists tested on the aliens in 1947.

FOX MULDER
... Roswell...

MARITA COVARRUBIAS (CON’T)
That incident is probably why
all of this is happening.

Marita walks over to the two-way mirror.

MARITA COVARRUBIAS
(after a short beat)
Imagine what they must have done to them...
They first came to this planet for the same
reason Neal Armstrong walked on the moon.
Why we explore Mars... to learn, study and
understand but never invade, destroy or alter life.

She looks into the mirror. They must be behind it. She turns to face Mulder and Krycek.

MARITA COVARRUBIAS
Somehow word must have gotten back to
their home planet about what happened
that night in ’47. They must have had
a way to know about what was being done
to their explorers.

She walks over to Mulder and Krycek.

MARITA COVARRUBIAS
How do we know they didn’t come here to
rescue their explorers? How do we know
they didn’t take the information given
to them from their pilots that crashed
and that’s why they came hostile. They
may believe we have the means to travel
to their world and destroy them because
of the aliens who were tortured after the
Roswell Incident? (beat) We perceive things
with a narrow tunnel vision that we never
even had the notion that they were friendly
and that this is just a misunderstanding.

ALEX KRYCEK
(disbelief)
A misunderstanding? Marita, what you’re
saying is insane. They’ve abducted us for
years. They had some of their own working
in our own Syndicate, for cryin’ out loud.
They deceived us, betrayed us, and now they’ve
destroyed us. (beat) To even think they came
because of a misunderstanding is...

He shakes his head. How can she even think they are friendly?

ALEX KRYCEK
(after a beat)
Since when are you on their side?

MARITA COVARRUBIAS
I’m not on their side.

ALEX KRYCEK
Well you sure defend
them like you are.

MARITA COVARRUBIAS
Well, since when are you
so narrow minded?

Krycek stands up in anger.

ALEX KRYCEK
Narrow minded?!

FOX MULDER
STOP IT!

Krycek and Marita look down at him. He stands up to face them head on.

FOX MULDER
Listen to you guys. Turning against
each other? It’s not you. It’s what
they want. They’re making you do this.
(beat) To turn against each other now
is to give into defeat.

Krycek looks down for a moment, then looks up to meet Marita’s eyes.

FOX MULDER
(after a small beat)
It’s mind control.

Krycek rolls his eyes and looks over at Mulder.

ALEX KRYCEK
You’re not about to suggest we
Wear aluminum foil hats, are you?

MARITA COVARRUBIAS
He’s right, Alex...

She gently places her hand on his arm.

MARITA COVARRUBIAS
They’re trying to turn us against each other...

She looks into his eyes, feeling this is what they are trying to do. They can’t let them have control. They all have to be strong if they are going to get through this and find a way to survive.

MARITA COVARRUBIAS
We’ve been sheltered from their abilities
for seven months. We know nothing about what
they are capable of.

FOX MULDER
We have to stick together.

He reaches out with both hands and takes hold of Krycek and Marita. They all exchange looks. Together, they can be strong.

MARITA COVARRUBIAS
What ever happens, we don’t tell them
anything. There’s no way of telling what
their overall objective is.

They nod their heads just as the door to the room opens. All three become cautious and alert. The Alien Guard stands in the doorway.

ALEX KRYCEK
What do you want?

The Alien Guard moves to the side of the door, allowing two more guards to enter the room. Krycek protectively stands in front of Marita, taking her hand in his. If they take her, he’ll kill them all.

The two guards grab Mulder by both arms.

MARITA COVARRUBIAS
(strong)
Let him go!

She attempts to move in front of Krycek to stop the aliens, but Krycek blocks her.

The guards take Mulder out of the room. The door slams shut, leaving Krycek and Marita alone.

Marita looks up at Krycek with worry. His eyes don’t meet hers.

MARITA COVARRUBIAS
(scared)
Sasha... what are they going to do to him?

Krycek shakes his head. He doesn’t know, but he’s afraid their day to find out will come... sooner, rather than later.

ALEX KRYCEK
I wish I could promise you that
nothing bad will happen, but I can’t.

Marita looks down and rests her head on his back.

ALEX KRYCEK
I’m afraid our days are numbered...

TIME CUT TO:

INT. HOLDING ROOM – HOURS LATER

Marita and Krycek sit on the floor in the corner of the room. Krycek holds Marita in his arm, determined not to let anything bad happen to her.

The door to the room unlocks loudly, causing them both to flinch. The door opens and an alien guard drops Mulder in the room, slamming the door and locking it as he leaves.

Marita sits up.

ALEX KRYCEK
Mulder?

No response.

MARITA COVARRUBIAS
What did they do to him?

Krycek shakes his head. He wishes he knew. He stands up and goes over to him, Marita follows.

Krycek turns Mulder over on his back. Blood runs out of his ear.

ALEX KRYCEK
Oh my god.

MARITA COVARRUBIAS
What the hell did they do to him?

She looks up at the observation window. Krycek moves Mulder away from the door. Whatever they did to him, he can only guess that he and Marita are next.

ALEX KRYCEK
Mulder, wake up. It’s me, Alex.

MARITA COVARRUBIAS
We have to get out of here. There’s
no telling what they have in mind for us.

Mulder twitches and then his eyes open.

ALEX KRYCEK
Fox, it’s Alex, can you hear me?

Mulder looks around the room, unsure of what’s going on.

ALEX KRYCEK
Do you know who I am?

Mulder nods his head.

ALEX KRYCEK
What did they do to you?

Mulder doesn’t answer him. He sits up, Krycek moves back to give him his space. Blood drips from his ear, running down his cheek. His hand brushes it away. He looks at it, then looks around the room. He’s at a loss.

MARITA COVARRUBIAS
(gentle, soft)
Fox, what happened?

Mulder shakes his head, continuing to move away from them and to the corner of the room where he sits with his knees to his chest. He looks away from them.

ALEX KRYCEK
(whisper to Marita)
He doesn’t know.

MARITA COVARRUBIAS
How can that be?

ALEX KRYCEK
It could be because of many things.
The mind blocking something traumatic,
or they’re not letting him remember.

The door opens again and two alien guards enter the room. Krycek pushes Marita behind him. They’ll have to go through him if they want to get to her.

ALEX KRYCEK
(angry)
What the hell did you do to him?

The guards don’t say anything as they approach Krycek and Marita.

ALEX KRYCEK
(threatening)
You lay one hand on her and
I’ll kill every last one of you.

He stares into the alien guard’s eyes, meaning every word he says. Without a word, the two alien guards grab Krycek and drag him out of the room. Marita watches with horror. What will happen to him?

The door slams shut.

CUT TO:

INT. HOLDING ROOM – THE NEXT DAY

Mulder sits quietly in the corner of the room. His knees still curled up to his chest. His eyes are blank, expressionless. He hasn’t spoken since the alien guards brought him back yesterday.

Marita stands across the room from him. Krycek is not back yet. Why are they taking longer with him? What do they want with him?

Marita slowly sits down. Pacing the room doesn’t calm her. She looks over at Mulder. She’s been worried from him before they brought him back, and now to see him like this and refusing to talk... she only fears what they did to him.

MARITA COVARRUBIAS
(gentle, soft)
Fox?

Mulder’s eyes look over at her.

MARITA COVARRUBIAS
Fox, you need to talk. Whatever happened
to you, you can’t hold it inside.

Mulder looks away from her.

MARITA COVARRUBIAS
(after a beat)
Fox, please... whatever happened to you,
it’s happening to Alex. It’ll happen to
me. If we can talk to one another, we
can help each other.

Mulder doesn’t respond.

MARITA COVARRUBIAS
We stick together, Fox... we’re
stronger that way. (beat) I believe
in us... I believe in you. You’re stronger
than them because you have love in your heart.

A tear falls down Mulder’s cheek. He turns his head to look at her.

FOX MULDER
I don’t know... what they did to
me... (beat) I don’t remember.

MARITA COVARRUBIAS
Do you feel anything?

FOX MULDER
I don’t know...

MARITA COVARRUBIAS
You’ve heard the term “mind
warfare” before, right?

Mulder doesn’t respond.

MARITA COVARRUBIAS (CON’T)
Its when they control your mind. (beat)
I vaguely remember talk of it... maybe
from years ago when I was helping John
Montgomery secretly develop a vaccine
against the alien virus. (beat) I don’t
know what it is for certain. I think a
human version of it was used on me... its
why I went crazy for a time... the Smoking
Man did it to me.

FOX MULDER
You think he’s behind this?

Marita shakes her head, but stops. Perhaps he is...

MARITA COVARRUBIAS
Oh god... what if he is? (beat) That
coward son-of-a-bitch... it makes sense.
Of course he would be behind this. He
always wanted to save himself. He made
deals with the alien colonist...

She looks over at Mulder.

MARITA COVARRUBIAS
Perhaps we’re not here for any alien
objective... what if we’re here for
his objective. But what could he
possibly want from us?

FOX MULDER
Scully.

MARITA COVARRUBIAS
Why her?

FOX MULDER
If he made a deal to survive, he must’ve
had something to bargain with, right?

Marita nods her head.

FOX MULDER
The chip in Scully’s neck. Remember
I told you it held vital information
to our survival? If they got their
alien hands on it...

He shakes his head.

FOX MULDER
There’s no telling what they could do.

MARITA COVARRUBIAS
That chip would secure their win.
We’d have no choice but to surrender.

FOX MULDER
But they don’t have her. They must
be hoping we know where she is.

MARITA COVARRUBIAS
There’s no way that we could know.

Marita looks down and shakes her head. It doesn’t add up.

MARITA COVARRUBIAS
(after a beat)
I don’t know... it doesn’t make sense.

FOX MULDER
Has war ever made sense?

Marita looks up at him.

MARITA COVARRUBIAS
We have to get out of here. (beat)
We have to find Dana, warn her that
they want her and the chip.

Mulder shakes his head in disagreement.

FOX MULDER
They’ll find us and we’ll lead
them right to her. We can’t find
her. (beat) The blood that was on
me, how do we know they didn’t implant
us with something to track us? How
do we know they don’t want us to escape
so we can lead them right to her?

The door opens and once again two alien guards enter. Marita stands up. This is her time now, she knows it. However, the guards grab Mulder again and drag him out.

MARITA COVARRUBIAS
NO! Let him go!

She starts to make her way to the door.

MARITA COVARRUBIAS
What do you want with us?!

The door slams shut just as she reaches it.

MARITA COVARRUBIAS
Dammit!

She hits the door with her hand and turns around. She looks around the empty room. Despite being alone, she knows she’s being watched. She looks over at the two-way mirror.

She calms herself and slowly goes and sits on the floor. Her back leaning against the wall opposite of the two-way mirror. She stares intensely at the mirror.

MARITA COVARRUBIAS
(after a beat)
I know you’re there. You’re watching
me, and I won’t pretend to know why.
So how about you ask me directly...
What is it that you want?

She doesn’t break her stare.

MARITA COVARRUBIAS
I’m willing to negotiate my friend’s freedom.

She waits for an indication that they’re listening, but receives none.

MARITA COVARRUBIAS
This is your only chance. You pass
this up and I stop talking.

She waits, but nothing comes.

She can only assume they don’t want to give freedom. Perhaps they don’t want information... not even from the daughter of one of the most powerful Syndicate Elders. Surely they know who she is and what she has done to work against their plans. She fought for this planet’s freedom long before any actual threats were made.

The only explanation for their silence is another agenda she can’t even think of.

Suddenly, the lights in the room shut off, leaving her alone in the darkness. She shuts her eyes, there’s no use trying to adjust to pitch black.

A low humming sound gradually increases in volume and pitch. Marita winces in pain. The noise increases, causing unbearable pain to her head. She’s in so much pain she can’t even move her arms so she can cover her ears. She feels disoriented, dizzy, as if she’s falling and there’s no ground below her.

Is she weightless? Perhaps she’s in one of their spacecrafts.

Whatever it is that they are doing, it doesn’t stop and the pain continues. It’s excruciating and she manages a scream.

CUT TO:

BRIGHTNESS.

Everywhere she sees, its white brightness.

FOX MULDER (V.O.)
Marita, don’t move.

ALEX KRYCEK (V.O.)
I can’t stop the bleeding.

Marita’s vision comes to focus. Expecting to see Mulder and Krycek above her, she does not. Instead she sees two alien guards looking down at her. She screams and manages to move away from them.

MARITA COVARRUBIAS
Get away!

She attempts to stand, but loses her balance. She holds onto the wall.

MARITA COVARRUBIAS
(terrified)
You stay away from me!

She makes her way to a corner of the room. She looks around. The room is empty except for the two alien guards. The walls are white, pristine, like a hospital. There is no observation window.

MARITA COVARRUBIAS
Where am I? Where have you taken me?

The closest alien guard speaks to her, his voice is Krycek’s.

ALIEN GUARD (KRYCEK’S VOICE)
Marita... it’s me... Alex. Listen to me-

MARITA COVARRUBIAS
(paranoid)
-I’m not falling for your tricks!
I see what you really are!

ALIEN GUARD (MULDER’S VOICE)
You’re bleeding, Marita. (beat)
Your ear... its bleeding.

Marita looks at the two alien guards. What are they doing to her? What have they done to her?

She brings her hand to her ear and feels blood. She looks at it.

MARITA COVARRUBIAS
What the hell did you do
to me?! What was that?!

One of the alien guards takes a step towards her.

MARITA COVARRUBIAS
Don’t come any closer!

She doesn’t like this. She’s trapped. Nowhere to hide.

ALIEN GUARD (KRYCEK’S VOICE)
Snuffles... it’s me... Snuggums.

Marita shakes her head.

MARITA COVARRUBIAS
Anyone could know he calls me that. I’m
not falling for your tricks! You can’t
turn them against me! We’re stronger than that!

ALIEN GUARD (MULDER’S VOICE)
Marita, it’s us. You know... May the
Force be with you...

ALIEN GUARD (KRYCEK’S VOICE)
Size matters not... R2-D2’s a drunk and
pervy droid who created cybersex.

MARITA COVARRUBIAS
STOP IT! JUST STOP! You’re not them!
You can’t turn me against them! Just stop!

The two alien guards exchange looks just as the door to the room opens. An alien guard enters and goes up to Marita. One of the alien guards behind him intently watches this alien take hold of Marita. On the way out of the room, the Alien Guard holding Marita nods at the other two alien guards on the way out.

MARITA COVARRUBIAS
I knew it! You can’t trick me!

The door shuts as she’s dragged away.

Mulder and Krycek exchange looks. What the hell are they doing to her?

FOX MULDER
We have to do something.

ALEX KRYCEK
I’ll kill every last one of them.

He turns and looks at the observation two-way mirror. He’ll start with the one behind that window.

Suddenly, the lights shut off, leaving them, like Marita, in complete darkness...

CUT TO:

INT. INTERROGATION ROOM – CON’T

The Alien Guard leads Marita into the room.

MARITA COVARRUBIAS
Whatever it is you want from me, you’re
not getting it. I gave you your chance
and you didn’t take it.

The Alien Guard straps her down into a chair.

MARITA COVARRUBIAS
I’m stronger than you think. I don’t
fall for your trickery or your mind games.
(beat) I learned how to overcome things like that.

The Alien Guard sits in front of her, and stares at her.

MARITA COVARRUBIAS
I’m not telling you anything.

The Alien Guard doesn’t respond to her.

MARITA COVARRUBIAS
Are you just going to sit there?
(beat) We’re going to win this
war. We’re not as weak as you think.

ALIEN GUARD
You were wrong.

MARITA COVARRUBIAS
About what?

ALIEN GUARD
They were your friend. (beat)
Back in that room... they were there.

MARITA COVARRUBIAS
I’m not stupid. I don’t fall
for your mind games.

ALIEN GUARD
Do you know what it is we do here?

She doesn’t respond.

ALIEN GUARD
We improve your race.

She glares at him.

ALIEN GUARD
Your friends are being improved.
Soon they will think like us,
and fight for us.

Marita shakes her head.

MARITA COVARRUBIAS
You’re a liar. If that’s what you do
here, to everyone, then why aren’t
you doing it to me?

ALIEN GUARD
Females have another use for us.
(beat) Tomorrow, you will be
transferred to one of our breeding facilities.

MARITA COVARRUBIAS
(doesn’t like the sound of this)
A what?

ALIEN GUARD
There, you will help create
a new race that will thrive
on our new planet.

MARITA COVARRUBIAS
You can’t do this to me. I’m the
daughter of one of the most powerful
Syndicate members.

ALIEN GUARD
You mean Joseph Paul? (beat) I’m sorry,
but your so called secure arctic headquarters
was the very first place we conquered.

Tears well in her eyes.

ALIEN GUARD
So that makes you the daughter of
a very powerful, but dead, Syndicate member.

MARITA COVARRUBIAS
Mark my words, you’re going to pay for this.

The Alien Guard cracks a smile.

ALIEN GUARD
Oh, I’m sure we won’t. (beat) You see,
Marita Lynn, we know all about you. You
were born on the twenty-third of January
in the year nineteen-hundred and seventy.
You had a twin sister, Maria, who I’m afraid
has also died. Your mother, Lynn, was mentally
ill, yet there was no prior case of mental
illness in her family.

Marita tightens her jaw.

ALIEN GUARD
I also know that deep down you thin the man
you call Cancer Man was somehow involved in
her condition. He was there the night your father
committed her. (beat) Tell me... can you still
smell the sick sent of his cancer stick as you
sat at the top of the staircase watching doctors
drag your mother away in a white straight jacket
when you were only four years old?

Marita shuts her eyes, she can almost see it as if it were clear as day. Looking down into the wide foyer of her family’s mansion in England. The Cancer Man stands off to the side, standing in the doorway of another room watching as her father helps the doctors send her mother away.

She opens her eyes. She can’t let them do this to her. She can’t be affected by old wounds.

MARITA COVARRUBIAS
(determined)
You won’t break me.

ALIEN GUARD
Can you still feel your twin sister’s
salty tear fall onto your hand as you
both witness the destruction of your family?

Marita glares at him, squeezing her left hand into a tight fist.

ALIEN GUARD
I think you can, Marita Lynn. (beat) I
know you hear your sister’s whimper as
she held on tight to you. (beat) Tell me,
did Cancer Man look up at you? Did he look
deep into your eyes? Or did you look into his?

A single tear rolls down her cheek.

ALIEN GUARD
When he looked at you... what did you
feel? Anger? Fear? Hatred? (beat) Did
you want to kill him?

MARITA COVARRUBIAS
(very matter of fact)
No.

She takes a moment to gather herself.

MARITA COVARRUBIAS
I was four. I understood the concept of
death, but not of murder.

The Alien Guard watches her for a moment.

ALIEN GUARD
That’s right... the concept of murder
came much later. (beat) Tell me... when
you saw that man get assassinated by Alex
Krycek, how did you feel?

Marita tries not to break.

ALIEN GUARD
Did you feel guilty? Guilty because you led
that man into a trap. A precise location where
you knew he would be killed for what he knew.

Marita looks away from the Alien Guard.

ALIEN GUARD
No, it couldn’t have been guilt. You
wanted to be a part of your father’s
group that you would stop at nothing
to get what you wanted. (beat) Tell
me, did it feel good to watch him die?
You must’ve known that your loyalty to
the group was secured.

Marita tries to block the Alien Guard, but she can’t. In her mind’s eye she can see the General standing alone, not knowing what is about to happen, just that he was told to meet her there for information that she said she had. His back is to her. On the other side of the courtyard of the building she can see Alex Krycek... waiting for the kill shot.

MARITA COVARRUBIAS
(after a beat)
You know nothing about me.

ALIEN GUARD
You had General McMahon assassinated so
you could join the Syndicate against your
father’s wishes. (beat) Tell me, why did you
want to join that group? Was it to be closer
to the Cancer Man? Maybe you thought one day
you could get Alex Krycek to kill him. Maybe
you joined against your father’s wishes so you
could uncover the truth about your mother.

MARITA COVARRUBIAS
I joined to help this planet.

ALIEN GUARD
Were you away that General McMahon
had a daughter?

Marita doesn’t respond.

ALIEN GUARD
I think you knew, but perhaps you
never put two and two together.

MARITA COVARRUBIAS
What are you talking about?

ALIEN GUARD
Knowle Rohrer. You had an affair with
him... a way to trade information about
Monica Reyes and Dana Scully. (beat) Surely
you knew he was dating Shannon McMahon.

Marita looks away from the Alien Guard. She never put it together. Killing General McMahon secured her loyalty to the Syndicate. After she was a part of the Group, she never wanted to look back, never wanted to know who he was.

ALIEN GUARD
Yes... you betrayed them both and
never knew it. (beat) You have always
betrayed people, haven’t you, Marita Lynn?

MARITA COVARRUBIAS
I know what you’re doing.
(beat) You can’t break me.

ALIEN GUARD
Which betrayal was worse? Your family?
Alex Krycek? Dana Scully? (beat) Yourself?

Marita doesn’t respond.

ALIEN GUARD
It couldn’t be your family... no...
Going against your father. Abandoning
your sister when she chose life as a homeless.
No... you abandoned her before she saw how
money poisoned you. You abandoned her when
your father moved the two of you with him to Russia.

MARITA COVARRUBIAS
I was a child. It means nothing.

ALIEN GUARD
Oh but it does, Marita Lynn... you saw your
sister’s sorrow, her loneliness. You allowed
the strong connection you had with her to
crumble, barely held together by thin threads.
Maria saw your selfishness. She saw the evil
and betrayal inside you. All you ever did was
spy on your father because you knew that Cancer
Man sent your mother away, and ordered your father
to Russia. (beat) But that couldn’t be the worst betrayal.

MARITA COVARRUBIAS
What are you hoping to get from me?

ALIEN GUARD
(ignoring her)
Perhaps it was Dana Scully... your friend in
high school. She was in the Syndicate before
you. You saw in her what you wanted to see...
she was working two sides. Which did you decide
she was working? The good with John Montgomery -
her husband? Or the bad, with Cancer Man?

MARITA COVARRUBIAS
Why tell me things I already know?

ALIEN GUARD
(ignoring her)
You saw what you wanted to see. You
wanted her to betray you by working
with Cancer Man. You wanted to hate
her because you wanted more enemies.
(beat) You like to create enemies, don’t you?

MARITA COVARRUBIAS
She wasn’t my enemy.

ALIEN GUARD
Yes... I know you always thought that,
but you never could admit it. Why? Because
you always had enemies in your life? She
just happened to be dealing with your
life long enemy.

The Alien Guard looks deep into her eyes.

ALIEN GUARD
No, that was a betrayal rooted in
your selfish need for enemies. (beat)
But what about Alex Krycek?

MARITA COVARRUBIAS
I’ve never betrayed him.

ALIEN GUARD
Your affair with Walter Skinner didn’t
betray him? What about your affair with
Knowle Rohrer? Didn’t that betray him?
(beat) What about the emotional wreck
you made him become?

MARITA COVARRUBIAS
What are you talking about?

ALIEN GUARD
He loves you more than himself, yet
you never return his love. In fact,
you emotionally destroy him. Haven’t
you told him that you’ve never been
with him and never will be? If only
you could feel what it must be like
to be abused like that. (beat) It
is abuse, you know that right?

MARITA COVARRUBIAS
I’ve had problems in my past. I
think you know that. Cancer Man
fucked with my brain, made me
insane like he did to my mother.

ALIEN GUARD
So your saying your betrayal of
Alex Krycek isn’t actually betrayal?

MARITA COVARRUBIAS
I’ve never betrayed him.

ALIEN GUARD
So your worst betrayal must
be the betrayal to yourself.

Marita looks at him, unsure of what he’s talking about.

MARITA COVARRUBIAS
I’ve never betrayed myself.
I wouldn’t know how.

ALIEN GUARD
No, of course you wouldn’t know how.
You have no idea you’ve done it. But
you have. (beat) You’ve been living a lie.
Your life is not rooted in living, its
rooted in revenge.

He looks deep into her.

ALIEN GUARD (CON’T)
You feel it now, don’t you?

Marita looks away from him. She’s not going to let him try to control her.

ALIEN GUARD
You’ve seen what we’ve done to this
planet... Your home. Mother Earth, the
one thing you are made from. You’ve seen
what we’ve done to your friends, Fox and
Alex. You want revenge on us, on Cancer Man.
You just know he’s behind this... don’t you?

Marita looks back at the Alien Guard.

MARITA COVARRUBIAS
(strong)
He’s not behind any of this. (beat) He may
be a coward, but he’s not a fool. He doesn’t
have Dana Scully, he doesn’t have the chip,
and you have no use for him without either.
(beat) You should never look down on your
enemies, you should always respect them.

ALIEN GUARD
Like how you respect us?

MARITA COVARRUBIAS
I may hate what you’ve done to my
home and to my people, but I respect
your powers and your abilities. (beat)
Can you say the same?

She stares intently at the Alien Guard.

ALIEN GUARD
(after a beat)
You’ll be transferred to our
breeding facility tomorrow.

He rises from his chair and leaves the room, shutting the door behind him.

Marita sits, tied to the chair. She looks around the room. This can’t be real. Mulder and Krycek couldn’t be transformed into the enemy. It’s impossible, not when she’s going to be transferred to a breeding facility.

What is their overall plan?

She starts to move her wrists to break free from the restraints. She has to get free, she has to save Mulder and Krycek before these aliens can do to them whatever it is they want to do here.

She grits her teeth as she manages to break free. Blood drips from her wrists, but that won’t stop her. If they can’t escape now, it’ll be too late.

She cautiously opens the door and peers out into the hallway. It’s empty, but that doesn’t mean this is an easy escape. Every step she takes, she must take with extreme caution. Who knows what’s behind the corner.

She makes her way to the holding room Mulder and Krycek are in. She opens the door. Mulder looks up in fear... every time that door opens something happens to him that he can’t remember.

MARITA COVARRUBIAS
(whispers)
Mulder, get up. We’re getting out of here.

Mulder nods his head and gets up.

FOX MULDER
(paranoid)
How can I be certain it’s really you?

MARITA COVARRUBIAS
We can’t be certain of anything.
Remember how you always want to believe?

Mulder nods his head, remember his “I Want To Believe” poster he hung in his office.

MARITA COVARRUBIAS
Well, now’s your chance to finally
believe. (beat) Where’s Alex?

FOX MULDER
I don’t know.

Marita looks down the hall, hearing alien guards just around the corner. Their footsteps too close for comfort.

MARITA COVARRUBIAS
They’re coming. We have to go now.

Mulder nods his head and follows her. He quietly shuts the door behind him.

Mulder and Marita turn the corner just as the two alien guards turn the corner down the hall away from them. The alien guards make their way to the room where Mulder, Krycek and Marita were being held. Marita cautiously watches them.

She turns to Mulder and motions for him to go down the hall they are in. There’s no doubt the guards will be looking for them in a second.

They quietly run down the hallway, running towards a door marked with an “EXIT” sign. As they reach the door, a loud alarm sounds, indicating that the aliens have realized they’ve escaped.

INT. DARK PARKING GARAGE – NIGHT

They burst through the door and find themselves in a dimly lit parking garage. Condensation drips from the ceiling and runs down the walls. The air is warm and thick. Marita notices a symbol on the wall... The Pentagon... just as she suspected, they’ve taken up headquarters at The Pentagon.

MARITA COVARRUBIAS
This way.

She and Mulder run away from the exit doors.

FOX MULDER
What about Krycek?

MARITA COVARRUBIAS
We’ll come back for him.

ALEX KRYCEK (O.S.)
(voice shaky with paranoia)
Stop right where you are!

Marita and Mulder turn towards his direction. He is silhouetted by dim lights behind him. He aims a gun at Marita.

MARITA COVARRUBIAS
(careful)
Alex... it’s Marita...

She can sense he’s on edge. She doesn’t know why, but can see that that’s how he is right now. They’ve turned him against them...

ALEX KRYCEK
(voice shaky with paranoia)
Don’t you come any closer to me.

Marita does as he asks. He carefully steps into the light, blood drips down his face from his ear. Marita slowly raises her hands to show him that she’s not armed. He watches her carefully, not trusting her one bit.

MARITA COVARRUBIAS
Alex, it’s me... Marita. Your
Marita Lynn. (beat) Do you remember me?

ALEX KRYCEK
You’re dead.

He looks over at Mulder.

ALEX KRYCEK
(to Mulder)
Don’t trust her, Mulder... she’s
one of them, just in disguise.

He turns to Marita once again.

ALEX KRYCEK
You can’t fool me! I saw her! She’s dead!

Marita shakes her head.

MARITA COVARRUBIAS
No Alex, that was a lie. A lie
they showed you to make you believe
I was dead. They’re turning you against
us. Don’t let them.

She takes a cautious step closer to him. He cocks his gun, stopping her in her tracks.

MARITA COVARRUBIAS
This isn’t you, Alex.

ALEX KRYCEK
NOT ANOTHER WORD!

His eyes dart over to Mulder, who is frozen in fear.

ALEX KRYCEK
(to Mulder)
There’s a car over there. Get it.

Mulder nods his head and does as he asks.

Krycek looks back at Marita, keeping his aim on her.

ALEX KRYCEK
You can’t stop us.

MARITA COVARRUBIAS
Alex, please. This is mind warfare-

ALEX KRYCEK
(paranoia)
-SHUT UP! You think I don’t know
what you’re doing? You think I don’t
know what you are?! I know you’re
one of them!

Marita shakes her head, tears will in her eyes.

MARITA COVARRUBIAS
Alex... I want you to think about this
very carefully. (beat) How did you get the gun?

ALEX KRYCEK
(paranoia)
Wouldn’t you like to know?

MARITA COVARRUBIAS
Alex, please... this escape is too
easy. No alien guards have come and
they know we’ve all escaped. This
isn’t what it seems to be. This isn’t
an escape, this is them turning you
against us. (beat) They’re making you do this.

ALEX KRYCEK
(paranoia)
Yeah?! And how would you know that unless
you were working with them! You are them!

Marita shakes her head and takes another step towards him. She looks into his eyes, sees his fear, sees his paranoia, but most importantly, she sees him. She believes in him, she trusts him, has faith that he can break this cycle of mind control.

MARITA COVARRUBIAS
Alex, this isn’t you. You’re stronger
than them. (beat) I believe in you-

BANG!

Smoke seeps out of Krycek’s gun. Marita falls to the ground. Her body shakes in shock. Krycek comes over to her, looks down at her. Blood seeps from her threat.

Krycek’s eyes blink and a look of horror washes over him. What has he done?

He quickly kneels down next to her.

ALEX KRYCEK
(back to being himself)
Marita?!

Tears well in his eyes. He lifts her almost lifeless body and holds her in his arms. He tries to stop the blood from rushing out of her throat, but there’s no use.

ALEX KRYCEK
(crying)
Marita... no...

Marita’s last seconds come and her body lays lifeless, motionless in Krycek’s arms. She is dead.

ALEX KRYCEK
Marita, come back.

Tears won’t stop streaming down his face. He holds on to her tighter, pulling her lifeless body to him. This can’t be happening.

ALEX KRYCEK
Marita...

Her blood seeps through his fingers. He holds her, bringing her face up to his. This can’t be happening. Tears fall from his face onto hers.

There’s no turning back time. There’s no taking back what he did.

Mulder comes around the corner in the car. Krycek doesn’t bother to look up, he doesn’t want to leave her.

A humming noise starts to echo through the empty parking garage. Krycek looks up, remembering what happened the last time he heard this noise. The humming gradually gets louder, piercing both his and Mulder’s ears.

In the car, Mulder loses consciousness and the car slowly rolls down the parking garage lane. Krycek shuts his eyes and winces, finally losing control of himself and falls over, laying unconscious on the ground with Marita dead in his arms.

CONTINUOUS CUT TO:

INT. SECURITY ROOM

The room is occupied by two aliens, one a guard and the other of obvious importance. They both watch a feed from the security surveillance camera in the parking garage.

SECURITY ALIEN
Should we kill them?

HEAD ALIEN
No. Let them go. (beat) I
will report that our test
was successful.

The Head Alien of this newly occupied Alien Headquarters exits the room, proud that their new test of mind warfare was successful. When and where they will demonstrate this new sound mind warfare capability is left unknown.
