PREVIOUSLY ON “FOX & RAT”: Mulder, Krycek and
Marita were finally freed from the underground bomb shelter that protected
them from the alien attacks for six months. Once out, they were captured
by the aliens and subjected to a new version of mind warfare that
is in the testing stages. Having no control over himself or his actions,
Krycek killed Marita Covarrubias and realized his actions after it
was too late. He and Mulder fell unconscious, leaving them in the
hands of the aliens who decided to let them walk free.

EXT. DARK PARKING GARAGE – NIGHT
Marita stands in front of Krycek with Mulder
behind her. She is cautious.
MARITA COVARRUBIAS
Do you remember me?

INT. DARK ROOM – PRESENT TIME
JANUARY 16, 2007
Alex Krycek lies on the hard concrete ground.
His eyes are shut, but the memories haunt him.
KRYCEK (V.O.)
(from memory)
You can’t stop us.
MEMORY FLASH:
EXT. DARK PARKING GARAGE
Marita looks into his eyes, sees his fear, sees
his paranoia, but most importantly, she sees him. She believes in
him, she trusts him, has faith that he can break this cycle of mind
control.
MARITA COVARRUBIAS
I believe in you-
BANG!
SMASH CUT TO:
INT. DARK ROOM – PRESENT TIME
Krycek’s eyes pop open with a scream. He sits
up, holding the side of his head with his hand. He feels the dry blood
that came from his ear. He blinks his eyes to clear his vision. He
looks around. He’s alone in a small jail cell. The lights are dim.
The air is warm and damp. Where the hell is he?
MAN (O.S.)
Well, look who decided to wake up.
Krycek looks up to see a man sitting in a chair
in front of this jail cell. The man is around the same age as Krycek,
but has a beard and his clothes are torn and dirty. The man smiles
at him.
KRYCEK
Who are you?
MAN
Now why should I tell you that?
You haven’t been able to provide
us with your name. (beat) It would
only be fair to share.
Krycek looks at him confused. Does this man
know him? How many people does “us” mean?
MAN
Well, killer? What’s your name?
Krycek looks up at him and shakes his head “no”.
MAN
What? Cat got your tongue?
Krycek shakes his head “no” once more.
MAN
Well you better start talking,
killer... or else we’ll make you.
(beat) So how about I start, huh?
Krycek looks at him, not knowing what’s going
on or where he is.
MAN
They call me Coleman.
Coleman looks at Krycek expecting him to tell
him who he is.
KRYCEK
Where am I?
COLEMAN
Now that’s not fair, killer. (beat)
You see, I give you my name and you
give me yours. Fair and square, right?
KRYCEK
I... I don’t know who I am.
COLEMAN
Ah killer... c’mon. Don’t try
some half-assed insanity plea.
We don’t work that way here. (beat)
We like to believe in an eye for an eye.
KRYCEK
What are you talking about? (beat)
And why do you keep calling me that?
COLEMAN
What? Killer?
He looks at Krycek, menace in his eyes. Don’t
trust this man, that’s the only thought running through Krycek’s mind,
it’s his only instinct.
COLEMAN
Well, that’s what you are,
isn’t it? A killer?
Krycek shakes his head “no”.
KRYCEK
I-I haven’t killed anyone.
Coleman comes up to the bars.
COLEMAN
I’d be smart about this, killer. You
start lyin’ to me, you start lyin’ to
all of us... (shakes his head) That’s a
very bad thing to get into the habit of
doing. (beat) Do you understand me, killer?
KRYCEK
I’m not lying to you. I have no
idea what’s going on here.
Coleman turns away from him and walks across
the room from Krycek.
COLEMAN
Do you know what we do to people
who lie, killer? (beat) People like you?
Krycek watches him.
COLEMAN
We do to them what they deserve.
Coleman opens a door across the room and shines
a flashlight into it.
COLEMAN
Can you see that, killer? Can you
see inside this room?
Krycek gulps down his fear. What the hell kind
of place is this?
KRYCEK
(fear in his voice)
Yeah, I see.
Coleman shuts the door.
COLEMAN
Now, I don’t want to have to do
that to you, killer. So, how about
you start talkin’ so we can get to
the bottom of all this.
KRYCEK
What do you want to know?
I can’t remember anything.
I don’t even know who I am,
much less where I am.
COLEMAN
Colorado. That’s where you are, killer.
(beat) So how about you go on and tell
me where you’re from, and its best to
start tellin’ me the truth with a capitol
T or else you’ll be joining the others
in that room. You don’t want that, do you, killer?
Krycek shakes his head “no”.
KRYCEK
I don’t think I’m from around here.
COLEMAN
Then what are you doing here?
KRYCEK
I don’t know.
COLEMAN
You woke up from a nightmare... what
were you dreamin’ about, killer?
KRYCEK
I saw a woman. Blonde. She said
she believed in me.
Coleman nods his head and digs into his pocket,
retrieving a photograph.
COLEMAN
This wouldn’t happen to be her, would it?
He turns the photograph around for Krycek to
see. It’s a picture of Marita that Krycek took years ago. She’s smiling,
the sun beaming off her sunshine golden hair. Krycek looks at the
picture.
KRYCEK
Yeah... that’s her. Is she here?
Coleman smiles and pockets the photograph.
COLEMAN
I don’t give you answers, killer.
Coleman gives him a smirk and turns and walks
towards the door.
COLEMAN
If I were you, killer, I’d
spend my time thinking about
what I’ve done.
He turns to face him at the door.
COLEMAN
If you really don’t remember who
you are, I’d try hard because if
you don’t... you’ll be joining the
others in that room.
He turns and leaves, leaving Krycek alone in
his jail cell. The door shuts and the room falls dark, except for
a crack in a thick, dark cloth that covers the jail room windows.
CUT TO:
EXT. FOREST – SUN SET
JANUARY 16, 2007
Fox Mulder’s eyes pop open and dirt flies down
on him.
BOOM!
The sound of gunfire and bombs pierce his ears.
He blinks his eyes, trying to figure out what’s happening. He slowly
turns his head to see a small group of people firing weapons. Only
one man is wearing a Military combat uniform, but everyone else is
in everyday clothing.
BOOM!
More dirt flies on him. The bombs are landing
too close for comfort. Mulder looks to the opposing side and can’t
believe his eyes. The enemy – as he sees it – can’t be described as
human, only as alien... aliens from another planet. Has he woken up
in the middle of a science fiction movie?
Mulder rolls onto his stomach and crawls towards
the human forces, getting himself out of no man’s land. He finds a
large tree trunk to hid behind.
A bullet whizzes by his head and he ducks for
cover. Dirt falls all over him from an explosion near by.
O’REILY
FALL BACK! ENEMY IS SUPERIOR! FALL BACK!
Mulder can hear the small army start to run
his way. Their feet pound on the dirt ground. Gunfire continues.
What world is this? Mulder can’t help but think
he’s in a nightmare.
O’REILY
GET OUT OF HERE! ENEMY IS SUPERIOR!
O’Reily, wearing a military combat uniform,
runs by Mulder. He has a young brunette woman by his side, holding
on to her arm. He looks back and fires his weapon at the approaching
enemy.
O’REILY
(to young woman)
Let’s get out of here.
The young woman doesn’t listen having spotted
Mulder hiding behind the large tree trunk. She can tell he’s frightened.
She moves away from O’Reily and towards Mulder.
O’REILY
Samantha! Come on!
SAMANTHA
There’s a man. Hold on!
Samantha approaches Mulder, putting out her
hand to help him up.
SAMANTHA
Come with me. We’ll get you out of here.
O’REILY
They’re approaching! Come on!
Samantha gives Mulder a warm, trusting smile.
He takes hold of her hand and she pulls him up. Her smile never leaves.
O’REILY
Come on!
Samantha and Mulder run towards him and the
three of them run into the woods, hoping to find a safe place to take
cover.
O’REILY
We can’t risk going back to camp.
Samantha points to a large tree with a hollow
bottom.
SAMANTHA
We can take cover there.
O’Reily looks in the direction she points to
and sees the tree. It’s small, but big enough for a tight fit for
all of them to hide in.
O’REILY
Good idea. We could lose them.
O’Reily, Samantha and Mulder run towards the
large tree. O’Reily helps Mulder and Samantha in first, then he follows
them in, standing in the entry way with his weapon ready.
O’REILY
(whisper)
Stay back, they’re coming.
Samantha and Mulder crouch as far back as they
can. Samantha pulls out a wad of aluminum foil and forms it to her
head, wearing it as a hat. She looks at Mulder and holds up another
wad.
SAMANTHA
Want some?
Mulder nods his head and Samantha places the
aluminum foil on his head to protect them from the aliens and their
ability to read minds.
SAMANTHA
(whispers)
Carl.
O’Reily looks back at her and she holds up another
wad of aluminum foil to offer to him. He shakes his head “no” and
cautiously peers out of the tree trunk. He quickly couches back, leaning
on Samantha and Mulder.
O’REILY
(whispers)
Be very quiet.
Samantha places the aluminum foil on his head
to protect him, just as the alien forces go by, searching for them.
O’Reily watches with intensity, he’s on high alert.
The alien forces pass them. O’Reily cautiously
nears the entrance of the tree and peers out. He can still see the
aliens. They are lingering around. There’s no doubt that they must
know they are around.
O’Reily turns to face Samantha and Mulder.
O’REILY
They’re lingering around. They
must’ve seen us enter this area.
(beat) We’re in enemy territory.
O’Reily looks to Mulder.
O’REILY
You, what’s your name?
Mulder thinks, then looks up.
MULDER
I don’t know.
O’REILY
Do you know where you’re from?
MULDER
I can’t remember.
O’REILY
Do you know its dangerous
to travel alone in these parts?
MULDER
I figured that out just now.
(beat) What’s going on here?
SAMANTHA
He has amnesia, Carl.
O’Reily looks at Mulder.
O’REILY
She tellin’ the truth?
Mulder shrugs his shoulders. He must if he doesn’t
know who he is or what’s going on.
SAMANTHA
My name is Samantha.
O’REILY
Carl O’Reily. They call me O’Reily.
He extends his hand and shakes Mulder’s.
O’REILY
You must not be military, you have
no dog tags. (beat) Aliens have invaded
the planet last year in May.
SAMANTHA
May 2006.
O’REILY
Today is January 16, 2007. We are at
war. The aliens have destroyed most
human life and have control over our climate.
MULDER
That’s why it’s hot in January...
SAMANTHA
We’re a small group of people. I’m
one of the most recent they found.
We go around trying to find those who
need our help. Unfortunately we don’t
have any doctors. You’re not a doctor are you?
MULDER
I don’t think so. (beat) Where are we?
O’REILY
I think we’re in New York.
SAMANTHA
I’m from Virginia, I was traveling North
to see if I could-
O’REILY
-Shh.
O’Reily gets back on high alert and Samantha
and Mulder freeze in fear. O’Reily makes his way to the opening, just
to check things out.
O’REILY
Looks like they’re moving out.
SAMANTHA
Don’t trust it. Could be a trap
to lure us out of hiding. (beat)
I may not be a Military General, but
I played enough Stratego to know a
little bit about military strategy.
MULDER
(thoughtful)
Stratego... Scout...
A vague memory from Mulder’s past has just resurfaced.
Samantha looks at him.
SAMANTHA
You all right?
MULDER
Yeah... I just thought I
remembered something.
SAMANTHA
Stratego helped you remember something?
That’s funny, same thing happened to me
that made me remember I had a brother but
I was taken and then given to a new family.
MULDER
Wow. I think I once covered my apartment
with aluminum foil to prevent aliens from
reading my thoughts... I vaguely remember
something like that.
SAMANTHA
Looks like your memories are coming back.
Samantha smiles at him and turns her attention
back to O’Reily. He’s looking back at them with an expression that
says “how can you be talking about these things during a time like
this?”
O’REILY
It’s going to be a long night.
Off his look...
CUT TO:
INT. SMALL APARTMENT – NIGHT
MARCH 23, 1973
ST. PETERSBURG, RUSSIA
Little Alex Krycek (age 4) peers out into the
main living area of his family’s small apartment in St. Petersburg,
Russia. He sees his father standing, yelling at his mother, Yelena.
A bottle of vodka is in his hand. In a mad rage, his father tosses
the bottle across the room in young Krycek’s direction. Krycek manages
to dodge out of the way, but his hand gets cut, a deep gash. Krycek
screams from the pain, but runs away from his parents for fear of
what will happen to him if he were to be caught spying on them.
He runs into his older sister’s room. Tears
stream down his face.
YOUNG KRYCEK
(crying)
Katia...
He holds his hand out to her. Ekaterina, the
youngest of Alex’s sisters at the age of 9, comes over to him and
takes his hand.
EKATERINA
What happened, Sasha?
YOUNG KRYCEK
They were fighting.
His tears continue to stream down his face.
Ekaterina carefully takes the glass out of young Krycek’s hand.
EKATERINA
You’ll be all right, Sasha...
She takes a cloth and applies pressure to his
hand, then kisses him on his forehead.
SMASH CUT TO:
INT. JAIL CELL - NIGHT
Krycek’s eyes open. The room is cloaked in darkness.
He sits up, leaning his back against the cold concrete wall. He holds
his right hand, feeling where the wound from so many years ago would
be. He wonders if there is a scar.
His mind races to make sense of what he remembered.
The Russian language. A girl named Ekaterina that he called “Katia”,
maybe she’s his sister. She called him “Sasha”, a nick name for Alexander...
perhaps that is his name. Is he Russian? He must be. It’s easy for
him to gather that he did not grow up in a good household. He could
feel his fear from so many years ago in that dream. He feared what
would happen if his father, Sergei, would have found him spying.
The lights in the room come on. Bright this
time, not dim like when he first woke up.
Krycek looks towards the door, expecting any
second now for Coleman to enter the room. He doesn’t. Not yet anyway,
but Krycek knows he’ll be coming.
He looks down at his hands. He can’t see a scar
from when he was younger, but he does have cuts and defense wounds
on him. They are fresh. Do they have something to do with why he’s
here, held in this jail cell? Perhaps, but will he ever know?
His fingers are dirty, worn. Red stains are
under his fingertips. Blood perhaps?
What the hell happened to him? He wishes he
could remember, but he can’t. He doesn’t even know his name and this
Coleman person wants answers from him.
The door to the room opens and Coleman comes
in.
COLEMAN
Done much thinking, killer?
KRYCEK
Yeah, I think I’m Russian.
COLEMAN
Russian, huh?
Coleman sits himself down in the chair in front
of Krycek’s cell.
COLEMAN
Then maybe you can tell me what’s
written on the back of his photo.
He tosses the photograph of Marita into his
cell. Krycek comes over and picks it up, stepping back away from Coleman
once the photo is in his hand. This woman is obviously someone from
his life and he’d rather have the photo to help him remember. He turns
it over and sees words written in Russian.
KRYCEK
(reading the writing)
Ya teb-ya loob-loo. (beat) It
means “I love you”.
COLEMAN
So who is she? Wife? Girlfriend?
KRYCEK
(reading more writing)
Marita Lynn...
COLEMAN
That’s her name? (beat) What
happened to her, killer? (beat)
This was the only item you had
with you other than the clothes
on your back. (beat) Did you kill her?
Krycek looks at the photograph, running his
finger over her face, as if he can feel her soul through the paper.
QUICK MEMORY FLASH:
Marita smiles at him, excitement in her eyes.
MARITA COVARRUBIAS
Ya teb-ya loob-loo, Sash-oo.
She leans in and kisses him on the cheek.
FLASH OUT OF MEMORY:
Krycek looks at the photograph.
KRYCEK
(to himself)
Ya teb-ya...
It’s a distant memory for him.
COLEMAN
Have you given any thought to tellin’
me the truth about what you did?
KRYCEK
I’m telling you, I don’t remember anything.
COLEMAN
Well, you better start remembering
because your hours are numbered, killer.
Coleman pulls out a knife stained with blood.
He looks up at Krycek.
COLEMAN
I’m thinking I’ll leave this here
with you. Maybe it’ll jog your
memory of what you’ve done, killer.
Coleman stands up with the knife and sets it
down on the chair. Krycek looks at the knife, then to Coleman.
COLEMAN
You better start remembering, killer.
We’re getting impatient with you. (beat)
Remember what’s in that room? I’m sure
you don’t want to join them.
Coleman gives him a menacing look and leaves
the room.
Krycek looks at the knife again.
“Killer”.
He keeps calling him that. Why? Did he kill
someone?
His eyes focus on the knife. Dried blood is
on the steel. This knife must mean something to him, or else Coleman
never would’ve left it. He searches his memory, but can’t find the
answer he’s looking for. He’s never seen it to his knowledge.
Krycek’s hand makes way to his ear, where the
dried blood on the side of his face came from. He’s got bigger problems
to think about... how the hell did blood come from his ear? Is it
why he can’t remember? How does he know this Coleman and his group
he spoke about didn’t do this to him? What if they are the enemy?
There would be no way for him to know.
He looks at his hands again... defense wounds,
blood under the fingernails, dirt. How did he get like this?
He sits down, leaning against the cold concrete
wall. He collects his thoughts, hoping for memories to resurface.
He looks down at the photograph of Marita.
KRYCEK
(to himself)
So fair and so sweet...
A memory resurfaces of a poem he wrote for Marita
years ago. A smile crosses his face then quickly disappears. If she’s
not here with him, what has happened to her? His eyes look over to
the door to the other room and linger there. What if... no, he can’t
bring his mind to think of it... but what if she was one of them in
there? What if they hurt her like the others in that room?
This woman, Marita Lynn, must’ve meant a lot
to him yet she’s not here.
Krycek looks up from the photograph. His mind
races to put things together. The jail cell. The thick, black cloth
that covers the windows. Why don’t they want him to see outside? Coleman
said his hours are numbered...
What if they have her? Krycek can’t get Marita
Lynn out of his mind. What if Coleman has her and is trying to make
him think he’s done something wrong? The dried blood from his ear.
On the knife. His only instinct is not to trust this man. He may not
know who he is, but there’s always one thing he can rely on... his
own intuition.
Krycek pockets the photograph and stands up.
He has to get out of here. There has to be a way out. This can’t be
the end of him. He has to find Marita, make sure she’s safe.
The very thought of Marita Lynn powers him,
he can feel that... yet with this surge of power comes a feeling of
emptiness.
What could that mean?
CUT TO:
MEMORY FLASH
Bright lights fill the old living room of the
Mulder residence. Beams of light shine in through the windows and
an intense humming noise is heard.
Young Mulder cries out for his sister as she
is taken from him.
MATCH CUT TO:
INT. TREE TRUNK – NIGHT
Mulder’s eyes pop open.
MULDER
Samantha!
Samantha looks at him and places a hand on his
shoulder.
SAMANTHA
Are you all right?
O’REILY
Keep him quiet. We don’t
want to be found.
Samantha nods her head and looks back at Mulder.
She adjusts his aluminum foil hat that was sliding off his head as
he slept.
SAMANTHA
(whispers)
We have to be quiet. The aliens
are near by. (beat) Did you have
a nightmare?
Mulder nods his head.
MULDER
I had a sister. She was taken from me.
SAMANTHA
Taken how?
MULDER
By aliens. I saw bright lights and
heard a loud humming noise. It must
have been an alien spaceship.
Samantha looks at him.
SAMANTHA
There was a Stratego board game, wasn’t there?
Mulder looks at her and nods his head.
MULDER
How did you know?
SAMANTHA
Remember I told you I was
taken when I was younger?
Mulder nods his head.
SAMANTHA
I went through regression hypnosis. I
saw these images of a brother, a Stratego
board game. Suddenly the power went out.
I was scared and called out to my brother.
His name was Fox. Bright lights came in from
the outside and I felt weightless. I could
hear my brother calling out my name.
Mulder listens intently.
MULDER
What happened then?
SAMANTHA
It’s fuzzy after that. (beat) I
remember a bright white room, like
a hospital room, but it was a little
too white, you know?
MULDER
Were there doctors?
SAMANTHA
No, they weren’t human. (beat)
They were alien.
MULDER
What did they want from you?
SAMANTHA
They didn’t want anything. They
were telling me not to be afraid
and that they weren’t going to harm me.
She looks at him for a beat.
SAMANTHA
When I remembered this, I got
checked over by my doctor. I
have a chip implanted into me.
MULDER
Where?
SAMANTHA
On my stomach.
MULDER
Did you remove it?
SAMANTHA
No. I didn’t want to. I
didn’t feel I should.
MULDER
Then how do you know this chip
isn’t allowing the aliens to track you?
Samantha smiles.
SAMANTHA
Because it protected me. (beat) I
don’t know if you remember much from
when the aliens attacked, but they
used bees that carried some kind of
virus that killed most of the population.
Whatever the virus was, it made it so an
alien would grow inside a human. They were
using us as host bodies to create their foot
soldiers. An alien would grow fast, within
a minute. It would rip out of the host body,
killing it. (beat) I got stung five or more
times by these bees. I was never affected.
MULDER
So you’re saying that these aliens who
took you when you were younger... they
saved you from that virus?
SAMANTHA
Yes.
MULDER
So there’s good aliens and
there’s bad aliens?
SAMANTHA
To my knowledge only the bad aliens
are on our planet. I don’t know where
the good aliens were from. I don’t know
if they still exist? How do we know the
bad aliens didn’t kill them off too?
Mulder looks down in thought.
MULDER
(after a beat)
In my dream, I called out to my
sister. I saw her floating, being
taken by aliens. (beat) Her name
was Samantha.
SAMANTHA
Are you saying you might be my brother?
MULDER
What if I am?
SAMANTHA
What else do you remember
from that night?
MULDER
Something about a magician.
Samantha’s eyes bug with excitement.
SAMANTHA
(excited)
Yes! The Magician came on at nine.
You didn’t let me change the channel
on the television set.
O’Reily looks back at them.
O’REILY
Keep it down.
Mulder and Samantha look at him.
MULDER/SAMANTHA
Sorry.
MULDER
I called you “butt munch”.
Samantha nods her head with excitement.
SAMANTHA
You were wearing a sports jersey.
MULDER
For the New York Knicks. Yes!
SAMANTHA
Oh my gosh! You’re my brother Fox!
Mulder cringes.
MULDER
I even made my parents call me Mulder.
His eyes bug with excitement.
MULDER
(overly excited)
Mulder! I’m Mulder! Fox Mulder!
SAMANTHA
(excited)
YES!
They hug.
O’REILY
Shut up. You’re going to
give up our location.
Mulder and Samantha don’t hear him.
MULDER
This is so super! I’ve been looking for
you for years. I even joined the FBI to
find you. I re-discovered the X-Files division
that investigated paranormal cases. Oh goodie,
oh boy! Skinner’s gonna get one great case
report from me about this one. And oh Scully!
She’s gonna be so happy too! I’m so giddy with
glee I’m gonna bring back Super Buddies! I’ve
gotta let my little buddy Krycek know since he’s
the Vice President and all! Oh my gosh he’s gonna
be so excited! Will you be the co-President with me?
It’s a fun group and we go on adventures like road
trips and camping and love and friendships conquers all! Oh joy!
Samantha covers his mouth with her hand. She
looks at him very seriously. Yes, she’s happy to have found her brother,
but the world he knows has been destroyed.
SAMANTHA
(quiet/calm)
Fox... aliens have taken over our
planet. Washington, D.C., the FBI,
they’ve been destroyed. We are at
war. Most of the Earth’s population has died.
Tears well in his eyes.
MULDER
(quiet and sad)
My buddies?
Samantha shakes her head.
SAMANTHA
I don’t know...
Mulder looks down with sadness.
MULDER
(after a beat; remembering)
Krycek...
A tear falls from his eye.
MULDER
Marita... she’s dead. He killed her,
but it wasn’t his fault. The aliens
were controlling his mind.
He brings his hands up to his aluminum foil
hat and checks to be sure it’s on tight.
MULDER
I remember. We were in a bunker
bomb shelter in the basement of
the FBI for six months. The doors
opened and we dug ourselves out. We
were taken by the aliens. They did
something to us.
SAMANTHA
What?
MULDER
They turned us against each other by
using some form of mind control. I
remember a loud humming noise. It would
take me out, but with Alex it somehow
turned him against us. He killed Marita
because he believed she was one of them.
Somehow these aliens were able to control
us by using sound.
O’REILY
Sounds like they were testing
a new weapon on you.
MULDER
I hope it doesn’t get out into the
open. If it does, everyone would
turn against each other. We’d all kill
one another and we’d have no choice.
We have no way to fight back...
CUT TO:
INT. JAIL HOUSE – OUTSIDE OF THE JAIL ROOM –
NIGHT
A guard sits in a chair next to the door that
enters the jail room where Krycek is being held. The man is in his
late twenties and is reading a book.
Coleman enters the room and the guard quickly
puts his book away and stands up, saluting him.
COLEMAN
It’s time to bring him out.
GUARD
Yes, sir.
The guard turns and opens the door to the jail
room. Coleman enters.
INT. JAIL ROOM – CON’T
Coleman turns the lights on brightly, waking
Krycek from his sleep. He looks up with a groggy expression, but he
wakes up quickly for his own security.
COLEMAN
It’s time to meet the rest of us.
The guard comes in and unlocks Krycek’s cell,
going in and grabbing him, tying his hands behind his back with a
plastic band. Krycek winces in pain.
COLEMAN
(to guard)
Take him and follow me.
The guard nods his head and leads Krycek out
of the cell and towards the room across the way. Krycek goes in fear,
there’s not much he can do now.
INT. ROOM – CON’T
Coleman, Krycek and the guard enter the room.
Dead bodies lay on the ground. Their death ranges in time and the
stench is enough to kill someone.
COLEMAN
Now, I told you killer, I didn’t
want to have to bring you to this
room, but I’m afraid this will be
the only way to get through to you.
Krycek’s fear is obvious.
COLEMAN
(to guard)
Tie him up over there. Stay outside
the door until I get back with the others.
Coleman leaves the room.
The guard leads Krycek over to a chair. Both
of them have to step over the bodies.
KRYCEK
You don’t have to listen to him.
The guard doesn’t respond to him. It’s better
just to do his job.
KRYCEK
What did these people do?
GUARD
They did wrong.
KRYCEK
(doubtful)
Did they? Or did they only
do wrong in Coleman’s eyes?
(beat) How do you know you
won’t be in here one day?
The guard doesn’t respond.
KRYCEK
Let me go and I can take you
with me. Get you out of here too.
The guard finishes tying him to the chair. He
leans in close to Krycek’s ears.
GUARD
(whispers)
I’d be careful if I were you.
We are ruled by fear, but there
are those who believe in Coleman.
The guard leaves the room, shutting the door
and locking him in.
Krycek looks around. There’s no windows at all
in this room. The only way out is through that door, and that won’t
be easy.
He’s surrounded by death and the smell is nauseating.
Why is this happening to him?
The minutes pass feeling like a lifetime. The
anticipation of Coleman returning with the others and not knowing
what is going to happen when they get here, is enough to stop his
mind from thinking out an escape plan. What will they do to him? Coleman
wants him to remember, but he can’t remember how he got here, where
he’s from, or why they are holding him here? What will happen to him
if he can’t answer their questions?
The door to the room opens and Coleman comes
in, followed by two other men. The first one is named Harry, and stands
about six foot three inches. The second one doesn’t speak, but responds
to the nickname “Gravedigger”, he stands about six foot tall. They
are all larger than Krycek, so the idea of trying flee and escape
is impossible.
HARRY
That’s him? The dick that
killed my brother?
COLEMAN
Yes, that’s him.
HARRY
Well, it’s simple then. (beat)
An eye for an eye. (beat) You
picked the wrong man to slaughter, asshole.
Coleman looks back at Gravedigger and nods his
head. The man comes forward, pulling out a hunting knife.
COLEMAN
Well killer, since you’re not
remembering what you did, I
thought it would be appropriate for
Gravedigger to jog your memory with
a little ‘eye for an eye’ law.
He smiles at Krycek and steps back to stand
next to Harry as Gravedigger stands in front of Krycek with the hunting
knife. Krycek looks up at the man, who looks back at him with silence.
Without a word, Gravedigger starts to untie
one of Krycek’s arms with his free hand. Krycek watches, unsure of
what this man is going to do to him. He glances over at Coleman and
Harry, just as he feels the cool steel blade of the hunting knife
cut into his forearm. He grits his teeth in pain and looks back at
his arm.
Gravedigger looks at him with menace in his
eyes. He twists the knife and digs the blade into Krycek’s arm some
more. The pain is unbearable and Krycek screams.
COLEMAN
Do you remember now, killer?
Krycek shuts his eyes in pain, hoping that will
block it.
MEMORY FLASH:
Krycek’s hand getting cut by his father’s thrown
vodka bottle when he was four.
MEMORY FLASH:
Krycek working at a Burger Boy in high school
wearing a white hat. He reluctantly takes meal orders from people.
A disgruntled look on his face.
MEMORY FLASH:
Marita in the parking garage.
MARITA COVARRUBIAS
I believe in you-
BANG! Krycek shoots her dead.
MEMORY FLASH:
Krycek holding Marita in his arms as her life
slips away.
KRYCEK
Marita, come back.
Tears stream from his eyes. Marita’s blood seeps
through his fingers.
A humming noise starts to echo through the empty
parking garage.
MEMORY FLASH:
INT. SYNDICATE ROOM – 1991
The Cigarette-Smoking Man stands in front of
Krycek (age 22). He sucks on his Morely cigarette.
CIGARETTE-SMOKING MAN
Join us, Alex...
He hands Krycek a weapon, welcoming him to the
Syndicate as their new assassin. Krycek takes the gun.
SMASH CUT BACK TO:
INT. ROOM – CON’T
Coleman stands close to Krycek as Gravedigger
continues to hurt him with the hunting knife.
COLEMAN
Do you remember, killer?
Krycek is almost in and out of consciousness.
From remembering things from his past to feeling the pain being inflicted
onto him.
MEMORY FLASH:
EXT. MOUNTAIN RANGE – DAY
Krycek, wearing the clothes he has on his back
at the present, walks aimlessly through the forest of the mountain
range of Colorado. He stumbles over his feet a bit, not sure of anything
that is going on.
In the distance he hears a man screaming. He
looks over and can see a man being attacked by another. He blinks
his eyes, unsure if this is what he’s really seeing. The man cries
out for help.
As Krycek comes up to answer to the cry for
help, he sees another man, in a mad rage, slice the other man’s throat
with a hunting knife. The man repeats his motion, killing the man.
Overkill.
Krycek jumps this man, hoping to get him off
the other man in the hopes of saving his life. The man rages after
him, pinning Krycek down on the ground. It’s almost as of this man
is in a rabid rage. Uncontrollable. He pounds on Krycek’s face, picks
up the knife and tries to kill him just like he did the other man.
Krycek manages to squirm his way out of this
mad man’s grasp. He runs as fast as he can, but the man catches up
to him, knocking him to the ground.
SMASH CUT TO:
INT. ROOM – PRESENT DAY
The pain is unbearable in his arm.
COLEMAN
Do you remember what you’ve done, killer?
Krycek opens his eyes.
KRYCEK
(pleading)
I didn’t kill him!
COLEMAN
Don’t be a liar, killer. Remember
what I told you about what we do
to liars? (beat) You’ll end up
in this room permanently.
KRYCEK
(serious)
I didn’t kill him. I tried to
save him, but I was too late.
It was someone else, not me. (beat)
Please stop. I’m telling you the truth!
Coleman looks at him, then nods his head to
Gravedigger, who removes the hunting knife from Krycek’s arm.
COLEMAN
(looking at Krycek ; speaking to the others)
We’ll leave him in here for a while.
Keep him as our prisoner. Then once we
break him down we’ll put him to work
with the others.
Coleman smiles at Krycek, then turns and leaves,
followed by Harry and Gravedigger.
A moment later, the guard comes in with a first
aid kit. He patches up Krycek’s arm, unties him and leads him back
into his jail cell in the other room.
GUARD
(whisper)
You got lucky.
Without another word or glance, the guard leaves
to sit outside the room.
Krycek sits down on the ground and collects
his thoughts. He remembered some more of his life, but doesn’t know
what it all means. But he knows for sure that he didn’t kill the man
they think he did.
After a moment, he takes out the photo of Marita
and looks at it. Her words echo in his mind, “I believe in you.” Always,
every time after he has a memory of her he hears a gun go off. Did
she die? Did he kill her? He remembers being handed a gun. Perhaps
he is a killer, but perhaps this was an accident. He can’t find it
in himself to want to kill her, to find a reason to kill her. But
he feels she is gone.
He lets out a sigh and pockets the photograph.
The lights go off in the room.
CUT TO:
EXT. FOREST – DAWN
JANUARY 17, 2007
Mulder and Samantha cautiously follow O’Reily
through the forest. They have safely escaped from their hiding place
in a large, hollow tree trunk.
In the distance Mulder sees warm lights. A smile
crosses his face. They are close to their settlement. His mind knows
the world has been destroyed, but his heart feels that they can accomplish
the impossible and fight back, win back the planet he loves and life
can once again return to normal.
Samantha looks back at him and smiles.
SAMANTHA
(whispers)
That’s our home.
Mulder smiles back. In all this turmoil and
destruction he has managed to find peace and happiness. There is no
doubt in his mind that peace can be restored. He won’t be alone either.
O’Reily, Samantha, and the people they found, they believe what he
believes: that we can fight back.
He can’t wait to meet these people, hear their
stories or survival, and learn from them. He doesn’t remember everything
that has happened yet, but he knows he will in time.
Mulder’s big hope is that all his buddies are
at this camp. All are safe. He worried for them when the bunker doors
closed early, they were all stuck outside when the aliens attacked.
If Samantha could make it alive from Virginia, who’s to say Scully,
Skinner, Monica, Knowle, Brad, Kim, and even Spender couldn’t make
it alive. He tries not to keep his hopes up, but he can’t help it.
There’s a chance that more have survived and if they aren’t here,
he’s determined to find them and bring everyone back together again.
Finding Samantha was once his mission in life,
but now it’s finding all his friends and bringing them back together
again.
Together, they can fight as one and bring peace
back to Earth.
Off of Mulder’s hope, we...
FADE OUT:
THE END.
